What are the meanings of dreams?

I don't quite know which section to put this in, so I'll post it here. :)

I've been wondering: if we're just souls residing in a physical body, where do we go when we dream? And what do our dreams mean? Do our souls leave this plane?
Because I've been having some strange dreams that are not some experiences from a higher realm but are connected to my existence here on Earth.
I often dream about my wishes and desires such as finding a partner or be a baby again so I could experience life anew.
Or I dream weird things and I'd like to tell you of three I remember most vividly, all from a time when I was between 4 and 7 years old.

In the first one I was hit by a bus but instead of dying, I was somehow glued to the street and all the cars drove over me and pedestrians were laughing.

In the second one, I was in a department store several floors high and I looked out of the window and suddenly the entire building was made out of glass and I fell through the glass as if it was water and fell to the ground. I woke up before I hit the ground.

The third one I'm not sure whether it actually was a dream or something real. I was sleeping and suddenly there was a hazy orange light (I'm short-sighted so I couldn't see what it was). I went to the window and suddenly the light (presumably a street lantern) became a huge fire. I fled to the bed in horror and next morning I remembered it like it was a dream.

I wonder whether these were my brain trying to process a journey to another dimension. Or foggy memories about past lives? I'm not sure.

Hi, Lia:

Long ago I was impressed to know that in some of the sacred ancient books of Judaism there is a phrase (don't remember it exactly) that we shouldn't abuse with miracles when trying to explain any unknown phenomena.

So, I think, it's always better, in this concrete case, to find the most materialistic explanation for those dreams.

Best of all it would be to consult a good psychologist/psychiatrist-specialist in dreams.

It might be just a combination of some latent phobias/phantasies, or even the scenes from some films you've seen or real episodes from your present life.

Physical tiredness (fatigue) often produces weird dreams.

Just make it as simple as you can.

IMHO.

Good Luck and Best Regards.

It's a window into the subconscious- a magical world about which we know little. Recording your dreams can become quite rewarding, with the potential to experience new realities.
:) And so many more questions will emerge.

"Row, row, row your boat-
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily...
Life is but a dream."

In my experience, dreams can be of different categories. Some are reflections of our current state of mind. Some, such as nightmares or very weird situations are something I tend to let go and not dwell upon. Some are precognition, hinting about the future, sometimes of very trivial minor incidents which play out later in the day after having a dream. Others are perhaps bigger future things, but those for me tend to be less common. Some are wisdom and guidance, often with a warm, gentle humour. And occasionally there are visits from the deceased.

Mostly, dreams for me at least, use a symbolic language, such things as walls, doorways, bridges, roads, these may not have a literal meaning but a very clear relevance to something in our lives, such as shifting relationships or interactions with the world.

The ones which I mention as visits from the deceased tend to be very simple, but intensely real, somehow at least as real as waking reality and just as solid. But these are very rare, I only had a few, over many years, scattered quite sparsely.

One thing I've noticed with the theme of guidance or wisdom, these occur more often when I pay attention to my dreams. Making a deliberate effort to remember and write down dreams, seems to increase the proportion of meaningful and relevant messages, as compared with the nonsense, muddled or confused types of dream. It is as if the fact that we are listening, paying attention, encourages our guides (for want of a better word) to communicate. When I don't pay attention it often seems like my dreams are more freewheeling, just running without a driver. So I do think it can be beneficial to listen to our dreams.

All of this is just based on what I've noticed from my own experience and ponderings, I don't have any particular expertise other than that.

That's interesting. I've just decided to finally do a dream diary starting tomorrow (because I've already forgotten my dream from tonight - something that happens quite rearely, actually!).

However, I would like to know your opinion on what nightmares and dreams with very weird situations mean, though, even if you don't dwell upon, I'd like to know what they symbolize.

I also wonder what happens with our consciousness and our soul during dreams. Because I don't believe the materialistic notion that consciousness is generated by the brain but that the brain is a vessel for the soul and consciousness.

Also, I did have some déja-vu situations, especially concerning my current job training where, when we have lessons, I encounter situations where I think, like, huh? Didn't we have this exact sequence of events before? But they are always superficial, not huge steps in my job training but details like what answer the teacher give or what suggestions he makes on how to handle a task, nothing life changing or notions on how my job training will go as a whole.

The dreams that I do remember seem to have meaning, but I have yet to discover what the meaning(s) is/are. One night, I can go from a dream about being an explorer to one about a runaway around the start of an apocalypse.

Just a brief reply for now. I've noticed often - rather like Scrooge in 'A Christmas Carol' - that indigestion or some disturbance to my sleep can bring on some weird dreams including nightmares. Not that I attribute all such dreams to that cause, but in recent times it is usually some physical unease which brings on unpleasant dreams. Often when I am able to sleep for a long time, undisturbed, I have some rich and interesting dreams, but they are pleasant, not of that kind. So, in the same way that I don't dwell on ill-health or sickness, I likewise move on past those dreams, let them go.

I will add that I have had times in my life when I regularly had nightmares, nearly every night, that may have some other cause but I can't say what. For example I had nightmares as a child, which is quite common. But what it means I don't know.

That may explain my recent not so pleasent and weird dreams since I have problems sleeping.

Also, having nightmares as a child may have to do with what kind of childhood you had and especially what kind of babyhood you have. Because the first few months of your life are those that the body never forgets even when the mind does. Things like loneliness, not enough physical contact. As babies, we're still in the survival mode of our ancestors when we didn't have the luxuries of safe homes. And a lack of physical contact, of breastfeeding for instance, can lead to lifelong traumas and can shape your desires. I for instance, have a huge weakness for baby stuff like baby bottles and pacifiers and a desire to be breastfed because my mom didn't and she also denied me bottles and pacifiers at a time when I still needed them. Essentially, I want to make up for lost times. So my dreams also reflect that. It is often said that in dream, we process that what we have lived through during the day.

In my case, bad dreams in childhood seem related to something I posted in another thread, that time just before falling asleep, I would see things, often they were scary faces, I needed a light on to help keep my attention elsewhere until I fell asleep. Well, there was a bit of light from a street-light outside, if I moved the curtains back to let that light in. Then I would fall asleep peacefully. I heard an idea somewhere that in childhood our mental defences are not yet developed, so we are vulnerable to external psychic influences. I don't know whether that's the case, but it makes some sort of sense to me. Definitely it was just the falling-asleep stage which was troublesome, maybe we are more open to other worlds then, I don't know.

Something else, related to the darkness when falling asleep. Darkness in general. (As an aside, it was much better for astronomy and observing the night sky when I was little. Nowadays there is so much light-pollution from bright electric lighting everywhere that darkness is a rare and precious thing, at least for town and city dwellers.) In those days it was very dark outside, and I used to be afraid of lions. I would often hesitate in the doorway for ages before daring to step into the darkness outside.

Lions! Of course there weren't any. But I've heard it said that such fears of wild beasts are quite common. It may be some sort of ancestral memory of the time when we used to live in small villages or settlements and the land beyond would have contained all sorts of wild creatures, real ones, genuinely dangerous and intent on grabbing themselves a meal. The way early humans learned to keep such beasts at bay was fire. The light of a fire would help to keep the threats at a distance. This same connection with light driving away fearsome creatures again. It may be an ancient knowledge that we all have.

I agree with what Speedwell said in that dreams can fall into different categories. Some of them do overlap quite a bit, I think. Personally, I think the dream world is the halfway point between the physical world and the astral realm. A lot of people once they're aware they're dreaming, can switch over to the astral realm. I've never been able to do so via a dream.

It's sometimes best to go with the most obvious dream interpretations first. Like, often times what you see is exactly what it means, you know? Sometimes it really is just dream nonsense that isn't supposed to make sense. That's not to say you can't or shouldn't look further into it, but you might be running in circles trying to find an explanation. The better question is what do you think it means? The best person to interpret your dreams is you because you know your own mind and soul.

For my own dreams, it's a mixed bag. Sometimes the dreams are horribly violent, past life related, completely random and basically impossible to interpret (I can tell you all some outright ridiculous dreams I've had lol), and other times they're deeply spiritual and/or full of 'visitors' from God knows where who find it absolutely hilarious to interrupt my dreams and just be obnoxious.

Even things you think about right before bed can affect your dreams that night. Late last night I found myself thinking about a childhood friend's mother, and there he was in my dream.

I think that fear of wild animals comes from an even earlier time when we hadn't settled yet but were always on the move.

That's really interesting. I wanted to start my dream diary today but I couldn't remember what I dreamed about. That may have to do with the fact that I had very light sleep tonight...?

Lia,
This is my opinion on the subject plus also my experience while out of the body. First off when we dream all of us leave the body temporarily and have various experiences on the higher dimensions of our universe. For most human beings this would be the astral plane since it is the next dimension of reality after this one. While in the dream state most of what goes on there is filtered by our subconscious as soul is still tied to the lower ego which tends to filter out what is really going on. Unless one learns how to lucid dream. There our state of consciousness is more focused and clear. The astral dimension is the world of emotions and the mind. So what ever we are truly feeling about something the mind will manifest in astral matter what we are going thru. The key to all this is learning your own dream symbols and what they mean to you. As we are all individuals even on the astral plane. Because astral matter is more in a state of flux where things change form very quickly there which is why dreams for most of us don't make much senses.

Once we learn to become more conscious of our experience there then the mind can have more control over what is being manifested. Which is why learning to lucid dream (at least in my opinion) is the first step into learning how to soul travel consciously on the higher dimensions of reality. You should try to look up some of this information online. As I have learned over the years that your inner state of being is tied into what is going on in our outer world here. As the saying goes so above so below.

Peace and love.....

That's very interesting! :)

I will research more on lucid dreaming but can you please tell me how you learned to do it? :)

This also leads me to another question: you said that "the astral dimension is the world of emotions and the mind. So what ever we are truly feeling about something the mind will manifest in astral matter what we are going thru." That would also include our desires, right? So if some desires are not met during this life, will they persist in the astral plane? Like finding a partner, having sex, wanting to be a girl, -re-experiencing a baby life (my desires as an example).

I believe that dreams are a possible portal to different dimensions or the astral realm. I had this strange dream yesterday night about my mother who died a couple years ago. I have had many visitation dreams about her, but this one was different. It was almost as real as reality.
I was in my old childhood home, and it was night. I was sitting in the sofa and suddenly she appeared as a misty figure - just like a ghost. I could still see and talk to her. We had a very interesting conversation, which I will never forget:

Me: “Mom, what are you doing here? I thought you were dead!”
My mom: “You are dreaming right now.”
Me: “What? No, I’m awake!”
My mom: “No, you are sleeping and dreaming. This dream state you are in right now, is actually the one that’s closest to reality.”
Me: “So there exist many dream dimensions and realities?”
My mom: “Yes, but this one is the one where I can connect with and contact you. Do you want me to do that more often?”
Me: “Yeah… Why not?”
My mom: “See you soon, honey”

When I woke up I didn’t really know what to believe. But this dream was so real that it made me somewhat believe in possible portals to the astral planes.

Lia,
Many years ago I had an NDE. Since then I have had on again off again OBE's. I would only have them if it started off as a lucid dream. Once I became aware that I was dreaming then I had control to shift my consciousness to have a conscious out of the body experience. How I would do this is with triggers in the dream state by looking into a mirror. If I saw a reflection of myself in the mirror then I knew it was still in a dream. However if I could not see myself while in front of the mirror I knew I was out of the body. While out I would then decide from there what to do or where to go. At first I had to learn to navigate my astral body so I could travel correctly in it by learning to control my thoughts and feelings. A really good book to read about this is titled. Adventures Beyond the Body by William Buhlman.

I realized that a whole other layer of reality within our universe was hidden from the eyes of man. It had always been there however as human beings we only experience this reality to a certain extent while sleeping or in the dream state. However because of the subconscious being in the way of what is truly there most people are to lazy to explore this level of existences. They would just rather wait until death occurred. However when that does happen many are not prepared of the reality that they are faced with and it takes some time to become accustomed to their new level of existence and adjust to their new surroundings.

As for your second question yes! anything that comes from your inner state of mind or emotion will manifest in astral matter almost instantly as this is the nature of astral matter itself. As you are operating on the 4th dimension of reality now which obeys a different law of physics. However one must remember that many get caught up in living out their emotional desires there be it fantasy or otherwise. This sort of thing hinders the souls spiritual growth and evolution going forward. So in a way it can be a trap of sorts. As the old saying goes (gold chains bind one just as well as iron ones do.) More so because the soul does not want to leave its prison.

So many souls can spend hundreds of years on the astral plane fulling all kinds of desires and wish's which satisfies the lower ego but does nothing for the better good of all concern. No true spiritual growth can occur because ones is too busy fulling it's personal emotional needs and wants. That is why some call the astral world the world of glamour and illusion. It's not to say that spiritual growth can't occur there it does but mostly on the higher levels of the astral world. In time this too becomes boring to the soul and at that point will want to evolve pass this to even higher dimensions beyond the astral which then it will transition into the mental and causal worlds.

So the lower levels of the astral plane could be used to satisfy your ego by living out the fantasy. The positive site to that is that, once you have satisfied your desires, they're no longer in the way of spiritual growth. I would rather fulfill my desires first so as I'm no longer consumed by them when I want to grow spiritually. Because if I went out to grow spiritually without my desires being satisfied, they might come in the way of that growth, right?
Or would you rather reincarnate first if your desires hadn't been met in your past life you just ended? In the astral plane, these desires could be fulfilled according to my needs without all the uncertainties in the physical world, couldn't they?

Lia,

Sorry for the delay in responding back. Basically you got it right. However most normal well adjusted human beings usually arrive on the middle astral plane after death. Where as you stated any unfilled desires that were not realized or manifest in the last incarnation on the physical will be played out on the middle astral world.

The lower astral plane is where many earth plane religions get there purgatory or hell. Although this level of the astral world is not eternal but is a place and dimension in which to work out the lower nature of ones being as it is more primal in nature. Alcoholics, drug addicts, murders, criminals, those that have been murder or had a sudden death like accident or suicides ect.. Are usually found on the lower astral plane which resonates just beyond the physical world. The length of time spent here is very individual in nature depending upon the karma which brought them there.

Those that died suddenly by accident are usually not here very long but are instead in a state of confusion since earth life was taken from them suddenly. There are astral helpers that help souls like this cross over to a more pleasant area within the astral world where they can heal inwardly and move on. Same is true for suicides in general since the soul that committed the act only hurt themselves and perhaps those that loved and cared for them. Many don't spend much time there but are helped as well to cross over into the light where healing and help is given. However this all depends on if they want help. Some don't and remand earth bound for a longer period of time.

The murder is in much deeper trouble since they took a life without remorse or concern. In which case they will experience the pain and suffering they inflected on those they killed thousand of times over. So it a living hell for them but of their own making. Only when there are truly sorry for the act and a inner transformation takes place will aid be given and very slowly the soul will be brought out of this place of darkness and pain. Once on the middle astral healing can begin and the soul will learn where they went wrong in which case another incarnation is planed out to work out the karma created. In many cases it will take more then just one lifetime to work out since the act involves many other souls involved be it family, friends ect, The future lifetimes will be harder to endure but it will instill in the soul more humility, grace and love with in them hopefully. As the lower nature starts to fall away.

On the higher astral plane is where many will start to experience their higher more spiritual nature within themselves as the lower ego falls away. Many earth plane religions have their heaven here and it is said this is where angels reside. This is only the first of many heavens as there are more higher, refine and grander dimensions beyond the astral plane but for now this is where most of us will start our inner journey.

Hope this helps some....

Peace and love.

So this leads me to two questions. First is whether the higher astral plane will be experienced differently according to each soul's believe? Like, Christians will experience heaven with angels and Buddhists will experience Nirvana? And what about atheists or agnostics? I personally believe that there is a Great Mother Earth, the Great Goddess who resides in the afterlife in her beautiful evergreen garden with fairies and other souls who have searched the goddess themselves taking over the angel role. There is evidence that something like this was believed in ancient Europe before the Indo-Europeans (Celts, Germans, Greeks, Romans, Slaves etc) came to Europe.
So if I'll die eventually, I would experience the higher astral plane according to that belief?
The second question would be again about experiencing unresolved desires. Take the example of my desire to re-experience breastfeeding due to infant trauma I have in this lifetime. Could I experience that desire in the higher astral plane? Would it just happen or would I have to ask the Goddess or a fairy or other soul to breastfeed me? Or would it be better to reincarnate and experience breastfeeding as an actual child?
Sorry if I'm repeating myself but I'm just so interested in how that would work. :)

Lia,

Let's just say that the source of all that is in the cosmos (god if you will) speaks to each soul from their own unique state of consciousness. So each soul when they merge with the light after death will understand god from their own perspective, culture ect.. and level of soul evolution. There is no right or wrong way to do this as we are all interconnected to the same source. Plus from a human level you and I and most every other soul on this planet is talking about communicating with a higher state of consciousness which is coming from the 12th dimension. If we were to know god without any filters over the mind ect.. we would lose our mind and go crazy. So the communication is down graded at a level that the soul can handle. At least this is has been my experience with it. As when I had my NDE I experienced briefly cosmic consciousness. The experience at the time was so overwhelming to me because so much information was being presented to my awareness that I could not process all at once. Yet the pure joy, beauty and wonder of it all was simple, yet complex at the same time as it transcended human language to describe the event.

Being an atheist or agnostic makes no differences as it is just another state of consciousness soul has to experience. As I am sure we have all been there done that as well in our PL. Your second question will be resolved at some point be it in another life or perhaps during your after life if that is what is needed. However it has been my observation during OBE's that those that recently died and are now living on some level of the astral plane out grow the need for certain things that were important to them while alive in the physical. Part of this is because their consciousness has expanded and they see the bigger picture in the grand scheme of life now. So I can't really answer that question for you. That is something my dear only you can answer or experience when the time comes. After all this is your own personal journey for you to have. The whole reason all of us are here is so that the soul may know itself by it's own experience.

Love and peace.

P.
