Country/Era

I am glad this thread was dusted off as there are a lot of good subjects raised by it.

I agree with a good deal of what has been said before and I will continue with this: certain souls seem to be "experts" in a certain area of life. Brian Weiss touched on this in a book, though I cannot recall it exactly. There seems to be certain things a soul will specialize in. This could be in a gender, profession, location, or who knows what else. While it seems everyone tries a variety of things at least once, a lot of people will notice reoccurring patterns in their lives. I recall several people here who seem to only remember being either male or female, one and never the other. Perhaps this is is because this experience was more common to them? Up to this point, I have noticed that I only recall past lives in which I went to war at one point or another. Perhaps this is a career I am an "expert" in. If souls specialize in these things, why could they not choose to specialize in something like "Western culture"? I know this might sound like a silly defense, but it is a possibility. Each of us has only limited evidence, but if patterns are accepted in other areas, why is it scandalous to think that certain people would be more likely to be from similar places?

Few people, if any, know the full extent of all of their past lives. That would be a terrible burden which might drive a person mad. The lives we do remember seem to be specific to what we need to deal with now or what we are currently familiar with. There are exceptions to this, but it seems to be a good rule of thumb. Coming back to my case of only remembering war: surely this is not the only thing I have done with my lives, but I have no evidence to prove otherwise. What I do have is evidence of why these lives specifically may be the ones resurfacing. While I have spent my entire life this time as a civilian in an area where war is nowhere nearby, I have spent most of my life surrounded by the subject in a more fictionalized format. From playing with fake swords and guns as a child to reading books and watching movies focusing on combat and adventure later in life, these are the sorts of things that stick with me. I started reading old literature and war chronicles before I finished losing my baby teeth. It is not surprising, then, that these are the kinds of past lives I uncovered. And these lives happened to tackle some of the lessons and concepts that I need to work on personally. They cover a lot of concepts which appear prominently in my current incarnation, such as leadership, loyalty, and unreasonable betrayal. These past lives offer up tools for my current spiritual growth in a way that speaks to me. Perhaps there are not a lot of people still out there that a tribal life would be the best tool to teach with?

While familiarity with a time is not necessary for past life work, it really does help. Why else would we run off to the history section of the library at each new memory? As has been said before, knowing a time before coming into a memory could aid in focusing on the content and implications instead of being in awe of the setting. Sometimes, a person might need a bit of a spiritual memory jog before something will come back to them. Or perhaps a certain concepts may wait in memories that would be misinterpreted without at least a brief knowledge of the setting. This is the case with the first life I uncovered in medieval Japan. I knew nothing about Japan at the time aside from the fact that they were one of the "bad guys" in World War II and that they make good electronics. I knew absolutely nothing else on the subject. To be brief, a friend forced me into a small dose of Japanese culture which contained very vague spoofs of some history and historical figures. I decided to do research and the very first thing I found was a specific person who I had never heard of before that I was mysteriously able to recall life events about. Again, I never could have come across this material before, but after reading a small amount of information, more just poured out of me. It seems that lifetime was right on the surface, but I needed a small reminder to access it. Naturally, this led me to more historical research and looking into reincarnation. And it was a good thing that I researched both. If I had regressed to the memory of committing Seppuku before I was familiar with the concept, I would have been too alarmed and misinterpreted the memory. Just like learning to properly solve an equation in math would be futile without first understanding multiplication, properly understanding certain memories can require certain base knowledge like history or culture. Which could be another reason why a person is more likely to recall lives in places they are familiar with. They have met the minimum requirement needed to be ready for that life.

I have a personal theory on this, and it is rather simple. My explanation is devoid of any scientific or metaphysical explanations because I am not educated in any of that. My own theory is based on my own knowledge of myself and my past life and my suspicions about others I have known. I really should have posted this in the theories thread but I thought it fit here, as a possible answer to your question.

Again, I believe it simple. I do not want anyone to think I am debunking their own theories, by the way. This is only my personal belief.

I think you are reborn in a similar body. I think your soul matches with certain psysical features. That, I think, explains why so many western people identify themselves as as reincarnations of past western people. They share the same traits. I do think it is possible, however, to also have reincarnations of other races, though I still believe there would be similar traits somewhere. I want to believe that one day science will prove this, but if it ever does, it will be far into the future.

There is more to my theory, but it doesn't really match with your question so I will not include it. I just wanted to share my own, though rather simple, opinion and perspective to you.
