Titanic 2

I heard this lately that some millionaire is doing a complete replica of the Titanic (down to the silverware and going so far as following the same route). You can even dress in period clothing(!).

Was wondering if this triggered any memories (as it's been nearly 100 years after the sinking)?

It makes me wonder how many people are buying tickets for this and had memories of the Titanic.

The idea strikes me a little off key. There was so much significance involved in the actual sinking that to basically "put it all back in play" seems to me on the one hand to be almost sacriledge, while on the other, a colossal waste of money, time and effort.

Even from a practical standpoint, iron sheeting for the hull isn't even made that way anymore...and the original ship used coal bunkers to fuel its boilers...the boilers haven't been made in 60 years and burning coal would prevent it from being allowed in any US port.

I have a bad feeling about this proposal...

I heard it also. I wonder how many people would have panic attacks, etc. etc. You cannot even build ships like that anymore. Water tight doors, more life boats, radio, rivets, etc. What they should do instead is build a museum set that you could walk through and feel like you were really on it. Maybe even rocking. The Titanic was so long the ports it was planning to use had to build longer piers for it. Also the fourth stack was "fake". No smoke from it, it was just to impress people.

I know each year there are luminaries lit for those who died in the flood. The one year my daughter and niece both were blowing out the candles. They told me that the spirits asked them to put them out, that it forced them to relive the horror of that day.

I would think it would have the same potential by rebuilding the Titanic as Titanic 2.

I would never take a voyage on the Titanic 2, that is for sure ...

No internet, No tv. Workout in the 1910 era gym.. No Leo or Kate either...Nope. I won't be on that ship.

Me neither, although it wouldn't matter to me about Kate and Leo (dislike them as actors to begin with). Though, I really can't tolerate watching any version of the Titanic-the sinking creeps me out!

After researching the debris that is floating from the tsunami out in the ocean I doubt I would ever have an interest on being out in the open water. Houses, planes, cars, you name it and it is there. You really have no idea what is lurking, and it could be far worse than the iceberg that Titanic hit.

This photo just saddens me. It really is a reminder that, for a while, the ocean overtook part of this beautiful country. That is far worse than the flood I am so immersed in right now.

I saw Titanic 2 on the news. My first thought was, is that the best way to spend $500 million right now? How many other more positive ways that could be spent. Though it does make you wonder, of the people that want tickets, were they passengers before?....

Before the 2008 recession, I heard that there was a plan afoot to build a Las Vegas Strip casino that was a replica of the Titanic. Who would be willing to gamble on a replica of a doomed ship? I felt it was disrespectful to bring artifacts of the Titanic up from the ocean floor. To me, it was like grave-robbing.

On the subject of the Titanic, I've been doing some reading about "group karma". I wonder if the passengers were a sort of "soul group", and have reincarnated together again, or if their "group karma" experience severed the ties? It's possible that people who were original passengers would buy tickets on a replica. There seems to be a human imperative to "do it until you get it right".

Really?

Just a vague sense of unease, but that's probably because I know the story and human hubris is bad. This seems to be just temptinng fate ya know?

As someone who died when the Titanic sank, I think this is a terrible idea! I understand why, I do, and if I had the money, I might think about it, because it may trigger more memories like the titanic museums did. However, that's like poking a stick in fates rear, and asking for it.

I'm curious how many romantic idiots are going to stand on the bow like Jack and Rose did in the movie. Though I imagine it would go more like this:

While not wholly my view, there is something sacrosanct about the sinking of the Titanic which the idea of a replica violates...and because I cannot put my finger on the touchy little bothersome good reason not to do it, first, you cannot go back, and second, its already been done so do something else...$500 million buys alot of "something else."

It was just my two cents, and was playing devils advocate! And of course 500 million can buy so much more, and better for humanity projects, etc. My point was that, while I didn't see why this was a good idea, I could also think outside the box and see why maybe someone would do it......

I have very bad feeling about this.

It's sheer arrogrance.

I was sick to death of titanic anniversay

last year. I found it tackey celebrating

the horrfic incident to sell wares rings etc.

I do have a book that came out right after the titanic, sinking happened.

I rarely read it. too sad

You can’t tell someone what they can and cannot do with their money. And whether people like or dislike the idea, Titanic II won’t ever be the Titanic. I agree though with Mama2HRB that Titanic II will be a constant reminder of the Titanic, and not in a good way. It’s enough already that the word Titanic itself is bandied about almost on a daily basis.

What made me cringe recently was seeing Bruce Ismay’s descendants invited to Titanic II’s recent launch. Anybody with a tenuous link to the Titanic today seems to be lauded over like some kind of Hollywood celebrity – and most seem to thrive and lap up the attention. More to the point in this instance, the minor details of the passenger’s connection with the Titanic appears forgotten, or worse not to matter much 100 years on. I myself was gobsmacked. Ismay was the man who insisted (forced) Andrews, the builder, make critical design changes to the ship, which gave her no chance at all of remaining afloat. Yet Ismay managed to get into a lifeboat and save himself. Now 100 years on we have his relatives at a black tie dinner for the Titanic II. Facepalm! It’s really sad that this glorified attention must be given to all the wrong people, all in the name of marketing and $. We’ve learnt nothing.

I noticed too that Molly Brown’s descendant was also at the launch and gave her seal of “approval” to the Titanic II. I love Molly Brown and all that she stood for and did in 1912 – bless her soul - but I’m not sure how a descendant could speak for the soul who was Molly Brown.

Would I sail on the Titanic II? Being able to visit the actual site of the sinking would be the only reason to do so. But I would not ... the thought of encountering any of Ismay’s connections on Titanic II will keep me away.

Agree with you there. Lots of people cashing in on other people's pain and sorrow.
