Hope everyone’s August is going along smoothly.
I want to talk briefly about spammers and, if you just received a notification to reset your password, this message is for you.
Anyone who runs a discussion group can tell you that combating spambots and fake accounts are a large chunk of moderating and here is no different. We have roadblocks set up so there aren’t spammy distractions and junk posted in our amazing community here.
However, it seems that some old accounts across many platforms have had their passwords compromised and can be accessed by bots. This means older, yet established accounts can bypass our roadblocks and post spammy links without being stopped.
We had one such post at the beginning of the year, but didn’t realize that this was going on until another account tried it yesterday. Both accounts dropped links to dating sites. While researching today, I found a forum that had over 300 of these, and another with five per day; we are indeed lucky to only have had the two.
Let’s keep it that way.
Therefore, members that haven’t logged in since August 1st, 2023 will be prompted to reset their passwords. I also encourage current, active members to change their passwords as well. We don’t want anyone’s account compromised.
