Boyfriend's Niece Remembers Being Gay/Transgendered?

Hey everyone. I am a big believer in paranormal experiences, as I have had my own. Some people call me sensitive or "mildly psychic," or "attractive" to spirits. Whatever I am, I've had my share of experiences. This one is a little different.

Three years ago, when my boyfriend's niece was about one year old, her mom asked me what my impression was. I looked at her for a long time, and then said, "Keep her away from water." I just got the impression that water around this kid was wrong somehow, and horrifying.

Cut to three years later. Her mom asked me to sit with her and talk to her about some things she's been saying about living in Italy with her "other family." I said that I would. I sat down with her in my own daughter's room so that she could play while we talked.

She did not tell us these events in order, but I'll give them to you chronologically for clarity.

My boyfriend's niece said that she was born to a mommy and daddy and several brothers and sisters in a house by a river in Italy. Everyone thought she was a boy, but she "knew" she was a girl. Her room was filled with boy's things. She said she was a boy because her "butt" was different, and that it was long and "had a pokey thing." I am told she has never been exposed to male anatomy in any way, shape or form.

Her father fished all the time (a fisherman, I assume). She did not say what her mother did, but she said that they were very mean to her because she did not feel like a boy. She used to sneak in and put on her mother's makeup, and they caught her one time and yelled at her. She said that they were very, very angry because she was a boy and should not wear makeup.

One day, some mean people "threw fire at her" and her hands were burned. She then went to a "very nice doctor" who "put band-aids" on her hands, but they got red and very swollen and they had to cut her hands off. She got one of those hangers with the clips on it and said that they had to cut like this and made a sawing motion above her wrists.

She said that everyone was still mean to her because she knew she was a girl, but looked like a boy. One day, her mommy and daddy threw her into the river and she hit her head on a rock and "then I died." She said someone who "cared about her very much" pulled her out of the river a while later, but it was too late because she was already dead. Then they buried her with grass and pretty flowers, and put a "sculpture with beautiful wings" on her grave. What 4-year-old knows and uses the word "sculpture?"

"Then I started all over again," she said very matter-of-factly. I asked if she remembered her old name, and she gave me a funny look and said, "No. Why would I?" as though it were a silly question. She said it was not the first time she had started over and that she was once a baby in Africa.

When asked if this time was better, she nodded emphatically and said it was "much better" this time and that her mommy was nicer. I asked what she learned in Italy, and she smiled and said, "I learned about good people. The best people in the world."

What do you guys think about this? Is there any sort of truth to the events in this story? Where could I research and try to find out more about this?

Hi Amberizzle, welcome to the forum, and thanks for sharing your experience with your boyfriend's niece.

It certainly sounds like she remembers a past life, but without more information, I don't think I would even know where to begin a search for validation.

Do you get many opportunities to talk to her? What does her mother think about all of this? Does she have any more information? It's always a good idea to write everything down that she says, however insignificant it may seem at the time. And when dealing with children of that age, sometimes they can express themselves better through drawing. You could try asking her to draw some of the things she remembers and you might be surprised at the results.

I'm sorry I haven't helped you much. At least she doesn't appear to be traumatized in any way by her past life memories. She may remember the pain of being physically tormented over her feelings, but that doesn't compare to the pain of feeling trapped in the wrong gender, so I'm glad that she made the right choice this time and finally gets to be her true self .... and she also sounds like such a wise old soul ;)

Let us know if there are any updates.

Chris :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to me! I know it's not a lot of information, I thought someone might know something about how Italian culture treated gay/transgendered people in their society some time ago? I got the impression that this was in the past, probably between the WWI and WWII eras. She said that the sculpture over her grave was built on a "very windy day" and that it eventually fell apart, so it's not there anymore.

I don't get to speak with her often, because she and her mom live in Michigan now. Her mom is disturbed by this, and I suggested that the niece go for past life counseling because she may need someone to talk to about all of this and feel safe.

Hi Amberizzle :)

Her mom is disturbed by this, and I suggested that the niece go for past life counseling because she may need someone to talk to about all of this and feel safe.
I think the best person for that job is her Mum ;) But first, it sounds like her Mum needs some reassurance herself. Does she know very much about past lives? Many people are under the impression that reincarnation only happens to a few of us, but in reality it happens to all of us, over and over. However, it seems only a minority of people consciously remember their past lives and specific memories in particular, while the rest of us remember past lives subconsciously through our habits and fears and fascinations for historical times and places.

If Mum is disturbed by her daughter's memories, she can be assured that reincarnation is a perfectly natural process that happens to us all. Do you think she would be willing to visit this forum herself? There's a lot of information here to put her mind at ease. In my opinion, unless your boyfriend's niece is being troubled by her past life memories, (which it sounds to me as if she is not), then I think past life regression is not the way to go for someone so young. Children do tend to forget about their past lives around the age of 7, as they become more focussed on their present life, so I would just let things run their course.

I would highly recommend Carol's book to you, and Mum: Children's Past Lives: How Past Life Memories Affect Your Child I think once she understands a little bit more about reincarnation, she'll then realize that there's nothing to worry about at all.

When I have time, I'll try a bit of Googling for you, and see if I can find out any information about Italian culture between the wars.

Well, I don't know about Italy, but I was in France in my last life, and I was a woman who was in a relationship with another woman, and this was during WWII, and we ended up being killed by the nazis just for loving each other. It was horrible. So yes I'd imagine it would have been just as bad in Italy around that time.

It will be interesting to see how she develops and what other memories she has. Make sure you keep an eye on her if you can!

Out of the mouths of babes...

I absolutely believe that there is truth in what your BF's niece is telling you, and I don't believe that you could find a more informative or constructive venue to learn all about past lives, than this forum here. :)

But, please, please advise her Mother not to let her be hypnotized. I believe that she is far too young for regression. I don't have any children myself, yet, but I would not allow any child of mine to be regressed before she was well into her teens; and even then I'd be dubious.

How wonderful you were able to help this child, Amberizzle! That is a profound story. Having someone other than a parent to talk to can be therapeutic, as children sometimes feel responsible for upsetting their parents and may not share as readily with them. It's good they both viewed you as a trusted friend. Your advice for past life counseling was right-on. My only caution would be that the therapist be a specialist with children.

Carol's work is so important in helping parents deal with this. Her books are filled with case histories and advice/suggestions that can change these situations into positive learning experiences for the whole family. She uses validation (accepting that these memories are real for the child, showing interest without becoming emotionally involved), combined with reassurances to the child that they are now in a different place, well-loved, safe, and cared for.

Whether the memories can ever be traced to actual sites or occurances usually doesn't matter. If a child believes them to be real, that is the basis for dealing with them.

Michael Newton's research speaks to gender issues. He says that since we've all been both sexes but have an affinity for one (reincarnating perhaps 75% of the time as that sex), we can end up not fully prepared for life in the opposite sex. We may have strong body imprints of the other sex that 'bleed through' to our present life, just as death wounds or trauma in a past life may transmit pain into our present bodies. It's not necessarily that we are homosexual or transgender, we just remember strongly what it's like to be the opposite sex.
