Recurring childhood dream - falling down well

Equestrienne7

Occasional visitor
As a child I had a recurring dream that was always the same. I was falling down a well - I never saw what was above or outside the well, or knew why I was falling. The dream always began with me falling in the well which was made up of old gray stones which were damp and moss-covered. It got darker and darker as I fell and I do not recall ever having the experience of hitting the bottom. The odd things about this dream were that while I was falling, I actually FELT the falling sensation in the pit of my stomach, and generally woke up with a gasp and a start when it was over. Anyone who's been in a car going over the crest of a steep slope will recognize the sensation of your stomach rising in your chest as your body drops. It's very strange. I had this dream many, many times throughout my childhood until it became so common I'd think in my sleep, "oh, that dream again." and not react to it. I think the last time I had it I was around 15 years old.
Initially I began to think I was having out of body experiences and that this was the 're-entry' stage (which I suppose is still possible) but the fact that it was so consistent and I had the physical sensations with it make me think now that it may have been a past life memory.
Anyone else have similar dreams with physical sensations?

Hi Equestrienne7 and welcome to the forum I love your user name (I am also a horsey person) .

Thank you for sharing your dream with us. Past life memories can come through in dreams and the fact that you had the same dream so often as a child does sound to me like it could be possible for it to be a pastlife memory.

You talk about falling down a well in your dream. I am wondering in this life how you feel about being close to an edge or somewhere with height that you could fall from or a dark enclosed space?.

The feeling that you talk about I have experienced. I remember I used to get it quite alot when falling off to sleep and it would jolt me awake and like you I never hit the bottom. I am not sure why this happens. I have heard different theories and one is as you say your spirit falling back into your body after an obe. I love getting that feeling in a car I remember years ago getting my partner to always take the same road where there was a bump that I would get that feeling when we drove over it.

Kind Regards

falling down well memory vs. OBE

Hi Kay - to answer your questions, no I have no fear of heights (as long as I'm on firm footing!) and no fear of being on cliff edges as long as there's a handrail. I even find it exhilerating.

Hearing that you, too have had that sinking feeling when sleeping makes me think perhaps my first instinct about OBE reentry may be correct afterall. Did you have a visual with your sensation or just the feeling?

Hi Equestrienne7,

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for sharing your dream experience. I've also had that feeling of falling just before being woken up, and I remember experiencing it far many more times in my childhood, I think it's a very common occurance.

I also believe that you were experiencing an OBE, but only remembering the last part were you are falling back into your physical body.

I'm not sure what to make of the dream itself, it could possibly be past life related, and the fact that it was the same every time is always a good indication.

I hope you enjoy your stay here, feel free to jump in with the discussions, or ask any questions.

Hi Equestrienne and welcome to the forum :)

Thank you for sharing your dream - as Kay wrote, past life memories are known to appear as dreams (Past life dreams - common characteristics).

What you describe also sounds a lot like what many people experience: right at the moment before they fall asleep they have the sensation of falling. It's only a split second, but enough to wake one up. Personally it has happened quite a few times and always involves me loosing the grip at a high cliff and falling down.

It's something that almost all people have experienced thus sleep-researchers have given some neurological explanation (I'm looking it up :D ), however I wouldn't rule out that the images that goes with it (e.g. falling down a well, off a cliff, etc.) could be past life related, a situation where the mind is going with something it's (relatively) familiar with to explain the sensation.

This isn't saying much, but the basic explanation is given here. Apparantly the phenomenon is called 'Hypnic Jerk' and is a muscle twisting :)

Welcome to the forum, Equestrienne7. :)

Dreams of falling are very common, and are usually interpreted as symbolising insecurity. You can find lots of information on different kind of dreams on the internet - take a look at one interpretation of dreams about falling here.

It's not to say it's impossible your well dream was PL related. I do find it interesting it always happened in the same surroundings and you are still able to remember details. I don't think it's very common to have falling dreams in the same surroundings every time, and I find especially a well a pretty particular place for this kind of dream.

Let us know if you find out something more about this.

Hi Equestrienne7

Did you have a visual with your sensation or just the feeling?
I normally would only have the feeling but there was a few times I seem to remember there being a visual but I haven't had the experience for many years. It seemed to be a common thing when I was a child and in my teen but so much not as an adult.

One experience that was a bit different but similar in feeling was I was lying in bed awake and just starting to dose off which was the normal time for me to have that falling feeling (well I thought I was awake but might not have been). I was thinking about being in the paddock with my horses the visual was very clear and I was just standing there patting one of them when the other one came up and spun around kicked out at me and got me in the leg. It was weird as she wasnt prone to kicking. The jolt from it was so strong and felt so real that the force of it jolted me wide awake. It was a very, very similar feeling to the falling.

Welcome to the forum Equestrienne7.

I had also several times experienced this feeling of falling just right after falling asleep or just before awakening, and I have read in an OBE book that this is something very normal.

Apparently everybody experiences OBEs during sleep, but of course, unlike the conscious OBEs, that we induce because 'we want to', these regular nightly OBEs we don't remember. At times, the 'pull back' to your body is for some reason forced and this is when you wake up earlier than 'planned' and you get to actually consciously experience the pull back, hence the falling feeling sensation that jolts you awake.

This, combined with the fact that you are not afraid of heights at all, makes me think you actually experienced the end of the OBE.

Yes, that was my initial instinct, that it was an OBE reentry, however unlike other responders this did not generally occur just as I was falling asleep, but rather in the middle of the night or very early morning. That the visual was so consistent, however, still made me think there was something there. Perhaps a PL visual accompanying the OBE reentry?

Hi,

Have you tried meditating on the image? Perhaps it could unveil something about what happened before or who you were in case it's pl related? :)

Good idea, meditating on it, maybe you get more insights, some images or feelings? I'd also like to know if you get any other impressions.

Not a bad idea. Though as it's been almost 40 years since I had the dream or the sensation I'm guessing whatever prompted it may be beyond reach. I understand everyone has these falling dreams and feelings but I think it's odd that mine were all in childhood and neither the dream or the feeling of falling has recurred since then (about 1971).

The fact that you can remember the details of the dream I think is enough for you to 'dig it up' :) I think that the reason why you only dreamt this dream in a certain period of your life could be because you were at the same age when you fell down the well. Perhaps this in itself triggered the memory in your soul?

I hope I make sense :D It was hard to put into English ;)
