Is it possible to gain access to abilities we developed in past incarnations?

Hallo,

Is it possible to gain access to abilities we developed in past incarnations? In every life we have to learn things like walking, talking, reading, driving the car,.... anew. But why actually?

I think I had many past incarnations, e.g. I lived in France. But why can’t I speak French today? And is there a possibility to get older talents back resp. to reactivate abilities you had in a past existence?

A warm welcome to you, billeurope!

Interesting question, I have been wondering the same.
Why do we have to re-learn so much from scratch?

I have heard from people who were able to learn PL-related skills relatively fast.
Maybe there is a way to retrieve past skills if we really want to and need them for our current incarnation?

EDIT: Wish I knew. Would be interested myself.

I believe that's because those are physical related abilities, so they're brain related, not mind related. But even mind related abilities aren't remembered, because you're more driven by your brain, not your mind, part of your subconscious.

I think I had such experiences too – but I’m not sure whether I learned just fast of PL-related-fast.

It might surprise you but: I do not believe in brains! (although I'm studying psychology)
I’m not 100% sure, but I think literally everything that’s content of my consciousness origins from my soul: thoughts + feelings + perceptions + sensations. Also my subconsciousness is generated by my soul, not the brain. If you would ask me, why we even have a brain, I would say: In best case it’s a kind of relay between body and soul – if at all.
I this sense, I think EVERYTHING we learned in past lives could be reactivated. But I alos think the major constriction is because the soul doesn’t want old abilities to be retrieved – life would be too easy then. And the main purpose of being incarnated is to experience suffer, pain, exhaustion, and frustration (for example while learning the same old things again and again and again forever...).

Actually in my case things have been done to STOP using abilities from past lives. For example, writing and piano playing, so I now have a hand speed 75% slower then the average person. I can write, but it takes me ages, don't know about piano playing, but it took me ages to use the computer keyboard, a sort of piano substitute.
Generally the skills you had in a past life are used in a different way to this. Otherwise Mozart would come back as Mozart. And that wouldn't do at all.
Somebody who was in the SS would possibly now work in the Social Security, either helping people who now need help, or if they have not lost the attitude they had in the past life, making certain pensioners don't get the money they are entitled too. That of course would be there choice.

It's the human brain that is the problem in most cases. Researches have shown that many of the nasty things are connected with the brain of the person. So the soul has to be cleansed of these things before moving on to the next life.
But there is one thing that is always carried forward. LOVE.

When I experienced death, through regression of past lives, the moment my soul left the body I felt very much like waking up from a dream. I immediately realized that I am not the person who died, but something more, somebody "real" from this new point of view. My interest for the ended life was fading away rapidly.

I haven't experienced the anthropomorphic afterlife model described by Newton, and with some variations by other authors.

The fact that in most cases the regressed subject describes impressions in line with the regression facilitator's beliefs, is explainable by the fact that during the sessions all the participants to the session get under some level of trance, and their subconscious get connected and influenced, unwittingly.

Regarding "love" ... I think there is a misunderstanding about it as a goal for the reincarnating humans.

We come here to learn to master our thoughts and emotions, because not having them under control in the non-physical creates nightmares, the way we experience now in our dreams. To master fear, which is the worst emotion and the originator of other negative emotions, we have to learn to substitute it with a benign, positive emotion. "Love" can be such an emotion, but it doesn't have to be the one we choose.

If we "love" all the others but get scared, or angered, or other such negative emotions, we didn't learn what we're supposed to, and our afterlives we'll get nightmarish at some point. Maybe that's the point when we have to go back into physical to cool down, and do it all over again.

In my experience, past life skills seep through a little bit through natural talent. One still must learn to master a specific skill, but it may come quicker or not depending on how much you have honed that skill in the past.

I was once considered to be one of the best warriors in the world, a master of hand-to-hand combat. That does not mean I could currently defeat anyone I chose because I have not trained in this lifetime. Although, I was surprisingly good when the neighborhood kids "played swords", despite being the youngest and weakest.

I have also been able to use past life connection to sort of "rent" a skill, if you will. For example, in a state of mind that was more regressed than in the present, I tried a language learning app. Because I was tapping into a lifetime where I was spoke the language, I completed weeks of the program in a single night, picking up new vocabulary as though it were just a dusty memory. However, the next day I could barely remember any of it.

Interesting, did any of it stick long after despite fading the next day?

I am thinking that like with personality some measure of the past skills and abilities does make it through like everything else like issues ect.

Nothing stayed around for long. There seemed to be little difference between re-learning the material I had already covered and moving on to later chapters. It seemed marginally more difficult to learn modern grammar and vocabulary. Which makes sense, because words like "phone number" would mean nothing to someone who lived 800 years ago, which is likely the last time I spoke that language.

I think skills and interests do carry over, but they still have to be nurtured. There is likely no way to regress so completely that you bring back skills into the present. Each body and brain has to be trained separately.

I agree especially about the difficulties with modern language and the same for the rest, I guess that what may pass for natural talent sometimes is just another hint of there being something hidden away in the past.

It is possible for skills to carry over in my experience, or at least for similar skill sets to be applied to ones thinking.

I put my abilities down to being 'smart' until I remembered reincarnation. Then the penny dropped. I'd just had plenty of experience at it.

Did you experience the same as when we are between two lives?

How did you get into this “state of mind” - through past-life meditation?

I would be interested if there is a kind of meditation technique which would systematically support bringing back old skills into the present life.

I think a had been a psychologist in many previous lives (on other planets) and I want my knowledge back that I had at that time without reading a lot of psychology-books and learning.

Better do not mention other planets, the forum owners do not wish this to be discussed.

Already tried to "interview" you PL selves, have an (not so) imaginary dialog with them? Not saying this will help, but it might.

I cannot explain it. Sometimes, the past sort of seeps into the present. I start to think and act a little differently, my posture and stride are different. I am still me, but under the influence of my past life personas, if that makes sense. Most of the time, it is completely accidental, other times I have noticed triggers I can use on purpose, like listening to certain music or going to a certain place. I do not know if this is something everyone can do, or if it is just a personal quirk.

There are some things that I may have picked up quickly due to knowing them in a PL. It’s very hit and miss though, so I can’t be certain I it’s because I knew it in a past life or if it’s just something that will come easily to me in all lives or just this one coincidentally, ect. I think the person who suggested this may apply more to physical skills than knowledge might be onto something.

I liked to ski in my most recent PL, and I’ve always wanted to try it in this one. I’ve never had the chance, but am very good at both roller skating and ice skating. Those, I picked up VERY quickly, like my first day. While I imagine there’s a difference to skiing, I do imagine the sensation of skating might feel similar, which could be why I got used to it so fast.

I was also a doctor in my most recent two last lives, so you’d think chemistry would come really naturally to me, but no. I struggled really hard on lecture/classroom days. Nothing ever clicked to me until lab days, where I did better than the rest of my group as opposed to worse.

I think we do use our abilities from former lives. Not the book knowledge, but the essence of our former experiences. In this life, I've done so many jobs without being qualified and I performed just like the other colleagues and sometimes even better. Every time when I step into a new thing I am insecure, but soon as I understand the essence of the job, I translate it into our today circumstances and I start working. I am not a genius, so I guess I use former knowledge. I also thought sometimes that I could tap into our shared Consciousness. I don't know. The only sad thing is that I forget quickly. As soon as I do not longer need certain knowledge, I forget it all.

Why not?
What’s about other instances of the same planet? I think there exist much more than just one planet earth – rather myriads of instances of “earths”. I think the most past lives I indeed hadn't on this planet. That wouldn’t work, because today there live 8.000000000 people on the earth and we all couldn’t have all our past lives on this one single planet which wasn’t populated that densely thousands of years ago.

Do you have a special meditation / instruction for that? I did a guided regression meditation on YouTube yesterday. The life I have seen wasn’t very impressing: A nomad in ancient Egypt. A person who had almost no skills or abilities – except very boring ones that wouldn’t help me much in my current life.

I think the cause that determines if one can or can not experience what you describe is if your higher self wants or doesn’t want to experience it.

I think to get in contact with past versions of yourself you need the permission of your higher self. Your soul has to want to experience the connection and it has to be in alignment with the life-plan your soul created for your current life.
Most souls want to concentrate on their current existence only – that’s why most people don’t believe in reincarnation.

I agree, we are all influenced by our experiences and create our version of reality from those limited experiences.

I suppose that would make sense in my case. I am supposed to be clearing out old emotional attachments and patterns in this life so that I can move on. One has to know where one has been in order to do that, so a close understanding could have been signed off on for that purpose. Something is telling me that is not entirely the correct answer, but I have no alternative to suggest.

I'm able to identify extremely well subethnicities and ancestry of people of european origin. A bit useless nowadays.

I can also sporadically retrieve useless book-facts about history of medicine and morphology from things I read in a past life.

I agree with the person saying that some skills are just motor skills and have to be relearnt. However, at the same time, some motor skills are learnt faster due to the fact that we already knew them before (speaking a language for example).
As for intellectual skills, some things you just forget in this life. I forgot 90% of the geography I learnt in high school, and that was just 15 years ago. However, if I read it again it will come to me more easily.

Answering the question, to gain access try to acquire the skill again, the process may act as a trigger.

I think some things can be more easily if you have been exposed, worked with it in a past life.

I have very short memories of being a soldier long, long ago (can't even put frame on the time area) and in that life I think I had to shoot with arrow and bow and shoot with riffles, guns, maybe even animals in order to get something to eat, right? In this life around in competitions for fun, when ever I have been in a situation that I need to shoot I do it flawless which has shocked the hell out of the people around me and me as well because I have no training of it in this life. The only explanation I have are the very short memories but I can't tell people that, they might give me funny looks.

Another thing is that despite of my shyness always during my working years, no matter what work I have been at, people, bosses all of a sudden chose me to talk in front of crowds. I remember me being part of a stage family in a past life and on stage one had to talk and make gestures so that everyone, including the people in the back and on the balconies would not get aggravated, and I think this has stayed with me, I articulate and talk so everyone can hear me. Think if I had not done that I would be in trouble in that past life, perhaps gotten tomatoes thrown at me or something ha ha....

It depends. One thing I had in a past lifetime was very neat handwriting. In this lifetime my handwriting was quite rough and unsightly. Oddly though I adopted certain traits, forming certain letters differently from the way I'd been taught, so my writing became an untidy version of its previous style.

Other things are perhaps less superficial, handwriting is neither here nor there. But the innermost thoughts, ways of viewing the world, of evaluating the merit of things, that has remained pretty much unchanged.

Then there was a very specific talent. It came through strongly during my childhood and young adulthood, but has waned as it has lapsed into disuse over time. If it had been my path to repeat or continue with that talent, then it would have been pretty easy to fire it all up again. But I consider my work there was done, in this lifetime I've moved in a different direction, one which is not entirely easy for me, yet it feels so right. The latter, I spend time playing a musical instrument, something which I don't do very well, but it was perhaps something I wanted to try - in an earlier lifetime music was something I touched upon but did not devote any great energy to.

So I'd say we may have access to earlier skills, but we don't necessarily have any need to do so, sometimes our need is to explore something fresh, push the boundaries in areas which we haven't done before. In fact to me that is the nature of reincarnation. Though there is a fluidity with which we transition from one life to the next, it isn't all about repeating the same thing over and over, but rather of approaching life from different angles, discovering the joys and pitfalls of other paths.

Totally. Like Jaimie said, some things just come easier if you've done them before. Some of those skills hang around, whether we really need or use them or not. I'm curious as to what skills my future self is gonna pick up from this lifetime tbh.

I have a pretty good knack for fixing/building non-mechanical things without needing too much instruction. I remember a PL in England where I built my barn/stables. Not sure I could actually pull off building another barn this time around, but fixing stuff is definitely a useful thing to have on the back burner if I ever need it.

What an interesting thread! Yes, I think it is possible to access past life skills, child prodigies do it all the time, but most people have a block against accessing those skills probably for the same reason they have a block on remembering past lives. I remember reading "the Search for Bridey Murphy" and the American housewife from the 1950's could dance a hundred-year old Irish jig under hypnosis, which she allegedly never could do when she was awake.

It takes many lifetimes to become expert at something. Suppose you want to become a billionaire. Do you think its possible to accumulate karmic merit in one life time only? A person who is a billionaire carries over his good money making tendencies from many lives and when perfectly developed only then he has amassed sufficient karmic merit to become a billionaire.

Its not luck. Nothing is luck. We always deserve things we get. Thats the basic principle of law of cause and effect.

Same goes for chess, music , drama, science. Einstein simply didnt pop out of nowhere and discovered law of relativity. It was a genius he must have developed in lifetimes of effort. Same goes for Other things.

So, yes we carry tendencies from our past lives. But we have every opportunity to sow some good tendenices that would grow to become something great in future lives.
