Whenever you wake at night, what do you first see?

I find that dreams are very visual. What I mean by that is whatever you are dreaming about is playing out on your retinas. When I wake at night it takes me about 5 seconds to see reality. When I first open my eyes I am still seeing whatever the last image was in my dream. I feel like if you could record the retinal images during a dream you could play it on a monitor. I think that is what is remarkable about past life memories. Like a dream they are very visual. It is not just an impression. It is an actual picture, like a photograph or video of that event.

Most of the time, I just open my eyes. Nothing special.
But sometimes I am extremely desorientated. Don’t know who I am, where I am. Those are weird moments.

The images, sounds etc. I experience before falling asleep.

Usually nothing spectacular. It's often as I'm drifting off, not waking up, that I see things that aren't there. Or sense things. Then again, I've never really paid too much attention to sensations upon waking. I'll be sure to in the future.

Normally, I don´t see anything special. Even if I awake right in the middle of a dream I only recall the last words spoken, maybe names, like a memory, a blurry scene, not a video for me. I once read that PL memories can be very individual - it doesn´t have to be visual - it can also be sounds, smells,.. accompanying the lasting intensive emotions which distinguish PL memories to plain dreams. Might be dreams work similar.
I´ve had a hard time to believe myself having had PLs cause there is no real movie happening here but I cannot deny or escape the emotions I carry.

Anyway, talking about waking up at night -- once, not so long ago, something amazing happened during the night. I woke up in my bedroom. And for some reason I didn´t recognize my husband nor my house. I felt all healthy and well and I wasn´t even confused about it. Only realizing - hey, where am I, who´s that? What house is that? I got up, walked around, fully awake. Still no familiarity. But no fear. I didn´t know we have kids but guessed that we do. I decided to go back to sleep and see what happens. That was interesting. My husband told me the next day he had realized I was getting up but thought I´d gone to look after our youngest kid.

When I remember my dreams, I almost exclusively dream about past and imaginary fighting. That is not nightmares to me, even if it would be for most, I presume. The images from the dream usually stays with me for a while after waking up. I am always expecting to see another face in the mirror if I go to the bathroom when I have just woken up.

Jamais vu. I have gotten it increasingly as past life material has become more prevalent in my life. It often coincides with not recognizing my own reflection, like Ritter mentioned. Or sometimes, I read my current surroundings as past ones. For example, often when I am in a building using plain white bricks, I become convinced I am in a prison (though this is never the case in this life).

I open my eyes and am disappointed to see I'm in same boring old bedroom ...
LOL, I wake up and I will see a very large spider crawling off of the headboard onto my pillow. Needless to say I'm out of the bed and onto the floor in a flash and then the image fades. Or I wake up and there is someone standing at the side of my bed looking down at me. I've awakened and I'm standing at the wheel of a sailing ship steering.
