A bright white flash

A few nights ago I was lying in bed with my eyes closed, not really asleep, and there was this instantaneous flash of bright, white light. It was like someone was standing above me with a flash light. When my eyelids snapped open I was half-expecting to see a spirit in my room or something haha.
I googled what this could possibly be and I read something along the lines that this happens to people when they're opening up more to the Spiritual Realm. I was just wondering if anybody had any input on this?

While some people attribute flashes of light or other internal sensory experiences to be spiritual; I think one should be aware that there may be quite reasonable physical causes, such as retinal pressure, neural artifacts or even disease as typified in this article.


Over the past several decades I have had quite a range of light flashes and moving shapes while meditating with my eyes closed, but have never experienced what anyone could call a spiritual vision. Unless they have meaning, I would attribute such things to natural causes. Ordinarily, I think most of us have these flashes, but never notice them until we are trying to meditate. The very act of looking for something to happen would make us take unusual notice of these very usual phenomenon.

+1. My dad used to get these colorful "auras" appear and block out his vision. What he had was retinal detachment.

I also have flashes as you described and in my case it turned out to be vitreous separation in which the fluid dries up and the clumps tug at the retina. Supposed to be very common.


If it continues you may want to get a checkup, meanwhile the very thought that it may open you up to some spiritual realm may be all it takes to do just that.

Would you describe it as "brighter than the sun"? Was is only with your eyes closed - or also open? Of course get your eyes checked if it continues, but yes...there is a spiritual component to seeing light. You might enjoy this thread.

Well, I have seen different 'lights' over the years, and my eye doctor can tell you my eyes are perfectly good! I've seen flashes, balls of moving light, dreamed about it, etc.

Deborah, it only happened once and it was with my eyes closed. I wouldn't say it was 'brighter than the sun' but it was pretty bright. I don't believe I've ever experienced this before, either, though I could be wrong. Thanks for the link too.
