Astral Plane

I just read about Insidious.. (Scary, by the way..) and they talk about the Astral Plane.

I have heard a little about it. But can somebody explain to me about it? The purpose of it.. etc etc. A little simplified, if you please.. The articles I read gave me a headache.

And how dangerous can it be? I too heard that there'll be demons on the plane.

Did anyone try this before?

PS. I'm not attempting to learn this as this tour de force looks mighty dangerous and I'm just curious about this feat of the Human soul.

I don't quite understand it myself, but I've consistently heard of people 'astral traveling' and when I hear that I think to myself, 'I did enough astral traveling while I was on the pain killers a few years ago. No. Thank. You.'

I by far prefer to keep my feet in the ground and have a 'clear head' and 'clear insight'.

Astral travel was the original term for what we now call Out of Body Experience. There were a few authors who were spreading tales that if you left your body for too long a period, some disembodied spirit might be tempted to take over one's unoccupied body. Many of these so-called out of body experiences were prompted by drugs, and might not be considered as true veridical experiences. However, drug induced experiences are often said to contain similar features and familiar characters.

Ah thanks Nightrain - that does clear up some of the misconceptions that I've heard over some of the years. I've only ever had that one OBE. I never sought out to have it or 'practiced' to have it - it just happened...much like all these other spiritual experiences I've been dealing with.

I just rather prefer to stay in the body and ground more. No sense in trying to accomplish something in the physical if one isn't grounded. This is also why I avoid pain killers as much as possible. I have not been on them since '05 and I'm happy to have gotten my health to the point where I didn't need to go back on them.

I do not feel that my one OBE was 'drug' induced by the RX meds I was on at the time (otherwise I would have experienced it more than one time  ), but feel it was more stress induced due to the stress I was dealing with on all levels - and the condition the body was in at the time.

I see.. :D

As far as 'evil spirits' - you don't have to travel to the 'astral plane' or have an 'out of body' experience to encounter them. After I had my NDE in 1978 and was back in my physical body, I had 'second sight' vision where I could see 'spirits' interacting with people on this side of the realm - while the person was walking around with both feet on the ground. People would be 'deaf and blind' to the presence of these sort of 'dark critters' as I called them.

I had many OBE's during my life - and I felt that when your spirit is outside of your body - you couldn't be 'deaf and blind' to their presence as opposed to being 'deaf and blind' to them while in a body. So - I feel the danger is more prevalent while walking around with both feet planted on the ground.

I see.. The Chinese has actually talked about this.. Be really careful of what you say or do as you don't know who could be next to you.. An old wives tale.. But I think I'll listen to it. :cool

Unlike most 'new agey' folks - I agree that there is 'negativity' around and I by far prefer to look it square in the eye and and give it 'what for'.

From my experience - which mainly has come from the 'new agey' end - there is this unwillingness to acknowledge 'negativity' due to the skewed idea from all these things regarding the 'law of attraction'.

From New Age Love and Light Fallacies:

3. Must not acknowledge anything negative
Many New Agers are downright phobic about anything perceived as negative. To the point where they will not acknowledge anything of the sort, period. To me, it can be so overboard that it comes across like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” or something. Just very……not right, fake and weird.

The New Age reason behind never acknowledging the negative has to do with the whole – misapplied – “Law of Attraction,” and the idea that whatever you put your mind on, you will draw to yourself. So therefore, don’t think about or acknowledge anything negative, don’t push back “against” anything because….well, you’ll draw it to yourself! Keep your mindset sunny and happy all the time, then this ensures your life will be free from all neg doings.

X!

This mindset is a bit simplistic, to say the least. “Reality creation” does have validity, as I’ve proven to myself, and I’ve reiterated all around my website and throughout my book the importance of one’s personal frequency, and the effect it can have on what happens to you. But the New Ager’s take on it all is too one dimensional and doesn’t understand the finer points of the concept. New Agers feel that by thinking or discussing anything negative you only “give it power!” For starters, since when did not thinking about something ever cause it to go away in this reality? It’s all still out there, even if New Agers refuse to acknowledge it. And two, if you obsess on something and are full of fear or paranoia about it then sure, you’ll probably draw it in to yourself. But if you look at something neutrally, non-obsessively, without fear, then you’re just merely looking at it and analyzing it. It’s the emotion behind the thought….or lack thereof….that determines the outcome. That’s how reality creation works, which they don’t tell you in New Age circles. It’s all about the emotional intent driving the thought. Not the mere awareness of it. Common sense says we need awareness of the things in life that are negative, dangerous or threatening so that we can know the correct action to take to dodge it as well as the correct mindset to adopt in order to not be compatible with it, and/or prevent it from happening again. But do so without worry, fear or paranoia.

Again, it’s because the concept as presented in most New Age circles leaves out the full story. Change who you are on the inside – which usually comes about through experience, life lessons and awareness – and your outer world reflects that. But the change has to be real, at the core. And in many New Agers cases, they’re repeating the law of attraction and “what you resist, persists!” mantras, but their inner frequencies are still problematic. That would be the case with the new age woman I mentioned above, who also wrote a book and proclaimed in that book that she’d reached “Master Level” in terms of her personal evolution O_o and had risen above it all. I won’t sidetrack onto the story about how she was as a person (other than to say that she had glassy, glazed over far away eyes and behaved in a delusional way…..) but in a nutshell the inner core did not match the outer proclamations.
In my experience, it is best to confront 'negativity' without hysterics and deal with it head on...in the subconscious.

Insidious was a movie designed to scare and entertain, so take what you learn from it with a huge grain of salt.

To answer your question, the astral plane is the 'place' your astral body resides. It is the state one reaches when you are between lives, or in deep meditation, or sometimes even when dreaming. Perhaps you are more familiar with Bardo? I believe these terms address the same thing.

As a side note, can we agree to stop setting up New Agers as some sort of straw man for everything delusional or hokey that we as a forum are not? I don't see people picking on Christians here. In fact, the forum is very welcoming to Christian beliefs.

Many New Agers believe in reincarnation. They believe in conciousness creating. They paved the way, changing Western spiritual thought so that places like this forum can exist. Can we stop kicking down on them so much, please?

Yes, I know that. That's why I'm not really scared of horror movies. (Unless its Alien or Chucky, I don't care if it wasn't real.. Its still scary!) :D

Oh, can you tell me what's Bardo as well..? I'm guessing an author..?

Bardo is an intermediary state after death. One might suggest spending less time here discussing horror movies and video games and more time in serious discussion.

Bardo is a Buddhist term for a state or place that is, in my view, very similar to the astral plane.

My memories of Bardo are of a very white place. There are rooms, of sorts, but if you wanted to you could travel endlessly in any direction without hitting a wall. The walls, by the way, seem to be curved. It is hard to describe, as it is a "place" that is not a real place, but rather a state of mind.

The people you meet there are sort-of shadowy outlines of people. The actual essence of the person is oval shaped, but from the center of every individual a bright light shines. You recognize a person by the vibe or glow they give, and when you communicate with them, you direct your thoughts to that light, to their center, rather than to where a face would be in a physical body.

The astral plane is the 'place' you go to when you are not in your body. You can run around the Earth plane if you like, watch yourself sleeping, move through walls, visit people living far away, etc. or, you can go to Bardo and meet with those who have passed on, plan parts of your life to come, and the like.

Sorry, my bad. A lot of religious Buddhist scriptures are in Sanskrit here, and I can't read it...

A lot of Buddhist literature has been translated to English, and you seem to handle that language very well.

I know that. But they don't really bother to translate the language to English here. Don't worry, I'll just google and read them. :D

You're missing the point, Ignotus. You don't owe anybody any excuses here. You are allowed to ask questions. All we are seeking here is more maturity and less chit-chat. OK?

I used to consider myself to be New Age, but upon further research discovered that I am probably more of a Spiritualist. I am open to learning about all religions, there is so much out there.

I did read The Secret and was a member of their forums for a while, they have a certain time when they get together to meditate upon needs that posters have listed. I was part of that one time and I can tell you that when tuning in I felt an amazing amount of energy, it was a very interesting experience.

As for The Law of Attraction, I do try to not focus on the negativity and do at times find myself rephrasing what I am saying to avoid the negative. The good thing about that is this world can certainly use more positivity.

I think no one has the right to attack anyone's religion, especially on a site like this. After all, it is our belief in reincarnation that sets us apart from many, attacking each other is an unnecessary addition to that.
