Do you dream of animals? Are they symbolic to you in movement and dance? If so - I hope you share your dreams and enjoy Gregory Colbert's work - ASHES and SNOW.

There are several links at the top to see where he has been, how he does his photography and the premise behind his creations.

In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people saw themselves as part of nature and not outside of it. The destiny of whales cannot be separated from the destiny of man, and the destiny of man cannot be separated from the destiny of all of nature. I am exploring new narratives that help build a bridge across the artificial boundaries we have established between ourselves and other species.- Gregory Colbert

See the images of him - photographing them here.

His work is amazing.

Ashes and Snow first opened at the Arsenale in Venice, Italy, in 2002. The Nomadic Museum, the traveling home of Ashes and Snow, debuted in New York in 2005 and then migrated to Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Mexico City, and is charted to travel the globe with no final destination. Ashes and Snow has welcomed more than ten million visitors to date, making it the most attended exhibition by any living artist in history.

Dreaming of animals, I had the most bizarre dream last night... there were loads of osprey sat around a lake, and an enormous bird swooped down and started hunting them and catching them and attaching them upside down in this tree. There were a couple of people standing there, open mouthed, and someone said, it is a sea eagle, but I said, that no, it is a crested sea eagle, and a proper sea eagle would be as big as a barn door.

Then, next thing, the eagle had turned into a semi eagle, semi old woman with a feather-hair pony tail, and it made those close to it, myself, a girl and a young man, wrap these ties around the pony tail, but they had to be wrapped in a particular direction (I can't remember if it was clockwise or anti-clockwise) then as the last band was tied on, we all found ourselves in a tent in a different place, and different time, with soldiers with spears outside the door. The other girl beside me did something, touched a string of metal beads hanging inside the tent, and immediately disappeared - I think she was sent back. I was desperately throwing myself against the wall of the tent, and trying to touch the string of beads wondering how the girl had done it, when the soldiers came in and caught me. The young man had already been caught, as he stepped out of the tent the moment we arrived there.

But then, having thought that all was lost, the soldiers marched us to the town square, which was almost semi-modern, semi-ancient, and let us go free. I remember seeing the tent from the outside as we went past though. Then we sat down on some steps outside the town hall and wondered what on earth we were meant to do now!!

Oh, and I forgot to say, in the bit of the dream where we were watching the osprey being hung up on the tree, there was a storm coming, and we were looking down at a train running by the edge of the sea, but we were anxious that it was already too late, as the train was passing through water, and sending up large waves on either side. But then, the train was no longer a train, but a blue serpent-train, gliding side to side along the sea!!! OMG

I think there may have been more, too, though I do not quite remember it, but I do remember when we were sitting on the steps, we suddenly thought of the celtic time-between-times, with having to tie the bands the particular direction, and with the storm coming and the time of day, and wondered whether the other girl had got out because she had been twirling round just before grabbing the beads, and as it was evening...???

It was all very bizarre, I have to say, and especially since I very rarely dream - or if I do, I never remember them. And when I do dream, they almost invariably end up being past-memory related.... Any offers of interpretation on this one? My mind is a complete blank..

Oh, I just remembered another piece of it - we were arranging some kind of herbs in a kitchen, or something, which was somehow connected to being transported, too...?

Hi Lynette,

Your dream sounds almost Shaman like. There's a few books you might want to look into; I'll dig them up in the next few days and post for you. Is there such a thing as a sea eagle? Thanks for sharing! Dreams fascinate me.

Thanks Deborah, I can't believe I didn't think of that. This dream does indeed sound very Shamanic. Curiously, it seems the sea eagle was a very important bird shamanically as well. Apparently the Orkney Island Shamans were buried together with them. They are very rare now though, and found mostly in the West of Scotland, but yes, when flying with outstretched wings, they were as big as a barn door!

I did look up a crested sea eagle as well, and while I found a reference for a crested eagle, I could not find a crested sea eagle...

At any rate, if it was a shamanic-type dream, I am curious where and why it has come from??

Hi, just curious - does any one else know of any interesting or informative books around this subject?

Thank you, Cryscat,

I believe I have stumbled upon that website before, though it is not entirely what I was looking for, but I shall definitely keep my eyes open for the Animal Speak book.

Personally for me Deborah it is not only on dreaming of animals but also in life in being with and listening to what the animals / birds around us are saying to us at that time when they interact with us and more. This might be hard to describe but will try in a short post. Now I like that quote posted from Gregory Colbert.

Since where I live is here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where so much of the wildlife is around and how much of the time am out wandering in the wilderness with the various wildlife all around. Have come when am out in the wilderness, it really helps for one to pay attention when interacting with the wildlife and to what the various wildlife nearby are doing or what they might be communicating with you.

But it goes so much deeper to myself just personally. In how many times can they be such teachers on things it seems. I have had so many incredible encounters with all sorts of wildlife that it would be really hard to describe in some short post on a forum.

But in going on ... the other day on a dayhike nearby, in the middle of the afternoon in which I was sitting in a special place of mine and meditating so to speak. Here flew into the tree right above me, a small Pygmy Owl. This Owl just sat there for some minutes with just hooting at times off and on. And this was on a bright sunny day in the middle of the afternoon to boot. Now for myself this was more then seeing some small owl but a real message from the spirit world also.

Now how many times it has been when I would be depressed or worried about something and out on a walk. Here would come an Eagle that would fly in circles right over my head. Now for myself this was also such a message from the spirit world.

Then there was the time I walked upon a grizzly bear boar off the trail. Making a long story short ... before the bear walked off into the nearby woods, we both deeply stared into each other's eyes from only like 75 feet between us. What an encounter. It has become one of the highlights of this life with so many deeper meaning then just some bear encounter to myself personally. One thing that I sensed a that time is what intelligence there was behind those eyes staring back at me. The animals we encounter are not just some dumb animals but living creatures also and able to be such teachers or messengers from the spirit world to us in just so many ways.

Have had all sorts of encounters thru the years with so many various wildlife. For myself it is not only what animals or birds or such appear in your dreams. But also what animals, birds and such that might come across your path on any given day and what message might they be bringing to you from the spirit world if one is able to discern the massage.

Do think that many of the Indigenous Peoples have had this relationship to the natural world thru the centuries. But is what we modern humans have somehow lost to some degree with all of our technology so to speak. The wildlife and the wild places are still out there for those that seek such. Just read a book on the Kuyukon - Athabaskan Indians in Alaska and their relationship with the wildlife. Their lives with the land is so so so much more then simply living off the land but deeply living really in a spiritually way with the land, the wildlife, and everything in such interesting and truly rewarding ways.

Just my opinion. Thanks for posting and Wishing Everyone the Best!
