Hitchhiking to find 'past life' associate

I recently ran across a series of shows on Vibe about a couple of guys (David Choe and Harry Kim) who hitchhike across America. It reminded me of my youth and the short and brief time I hitchhiked around after my amnesia. It was sort of 'therapy' for me. It was sort of nice to meet actual strangers and not have any chance of a 'hidden history' I was unaware of. It was back in 1979-80 when I took off with my 'thumb up' and just went on adventures. Strange, how I can still recall the faces and conversations of every single person who stopped and offered me a ride. While I was reminiscing about the conversations - I was sort of shocked to discover a possible 'past life' connection with someone who had stopped to pick me up.

I was on the Interstate (back in the day when you could get away with it) and was having a problem getting a ride on a stretch so I took off walking with my thumb out. Usually, you turn and face the on coming traffic but I was upset about not getting rides and tired of looking at the faces just passing me by. I heard a horn honk behind me - and I instantly felt dread. There is sort of an unwritten rule to avoid rides where the person pulls over 'prior' to passing you. I had trial and error with this and found that 'weirdos' are the ones who would pull over the instant they saw you. It is like they were out looking for 'hitchhikers'. I also got bad vibes from the ones who did this.

When I turned around to look - I was surprised to find a teenager my age - in a new car and dressed very nice. I was surprised how this 'feeling' of happiness rushed through me and I was very happy to see his face. It shocked me actually. You got a minute or so - to decide if the person you are entrusting your life to - is a 'serial killer' stalking his prey or not. (Maybe that is what made the thing so adventurous.) I prided myself in telling people - I only took rides with 'good and descent' people. I couldn't control this emotion that welled up and flowed through me as I approached the car and spoke to him. I couldn't wait to jump in and talk to him - and I didn't know why.

He said he was only going a short distance - which - was a good sign. (I never took rides with anyone who said they would take me as far as I wanted to go.) I got nothing but good vibes from him but asked my standard question. "Your not a axe murderer are you --- looking for someone to use your axe on." He laughed and said he had the same question on his mind about me. He admitted that he didn't usually pick up hitchhikers. When I did get in the car - I asked him, "Why did you stop before passing me. Most people like to check you out a little by passing you. I just curious why you had in your mind to stop before you passed me by to check me out some?"

He told me, "Something told me that I was about to see a hitchhiker on the world and something told me to stop and offer them a ride. I thought it was odd but when I saw you - it was like a part of me was expecting you. I think I stopped more curious about the prophetic moment."

I was 19 and he was 18. He thought I looked younger than him. I didn't say anything but I was struck with this odd sense that he looked very familiar. This (at that time in my young life) was very-very unusual. I had amnesia a year prior and was still trying to cope with the loss of so many memories of friends from my childhood. I had 'strangers' walking up to me in my hometown and they would relate stories of our past friendship hidden behind an invisible wall in my mind - and I would be standing there scratching my head nursing a massive migraine from trying to find memories of them.

What was not unusual for me - was to see someone (a stranger) and have memories of someone else in my childhood return to me - because the stranger looked like someone from my past. This - is what I thought I was dealing with - and part of the reason I hitchhiked through 'unknown' territory and roamed distant city streets and country highways with my thumb out like I did. It was part of my Doctors advise. (Only they advised driving to different locations away from my hometown and advised against my habit of thumbing rides.)

Out of the blue, the teenager asked, "Do I know you from somewhere? I keep getting the very distinct feeling that we have met somewhere in the past. I feel like I stopped to pick up a long lost friend. I can't shake that feeling. I got it the moment I saw you and it hasn't stopped.

I told him about my amnesia and how it wouldn't be my mind that would have recall of it - and it would solely depend on him to come up with a lost memory somewhere. I had never been to his hometown before - and he had no history of coming to my hometown. No possible connection in the past. He then said,

"Well, maybe we know each other from a past life then. A part of me feels I know you like the back of my hand."

I was shocked and turned to look at him wearing my shocked look. I asked him, "Do you believe in that sort of thing?" I told him that my family said I used to talk about it a lot when I was a child and having direct memories of people I had met but that was all gone to me. I told him, "If we would have met a few years ago, I probably would be able to pinpoint if that was true or not. Now, I am lost to it."

His answer to the question. "No, I haven't believed in it before in the past. It goes against my religion, but in this moment - it is like a very comfortable shoe that fits. Maybe it takes something like this to get people to consider it's possibilities. I have never considered it before like I am doing now."

We spent the rest of the time talking about other things and when he got to his exit - he pulled to the side of the road and I felt - neither of us wanted to part company. I had a schedule and was behind. I shook his hand and didn't let go for the longest time. He said something about 'meeting' again. "If we were meant to find one another like this, then, I am sure we are going to meet again, if not in this life time, then maybe the next." I told him, "Well if it is in the next life time, I will owe you the ride and hope the ride is longer as well as our time together." Something inside was telling me I had to walk away from him. I stood on the side of the road and watched him drive off with tears in my eyes. I was so shocked by my emotional response.

I told my Grandmother about it when I returned home. "How in the world can a complete stranger offer me a handshake and hand me more love in the process than anyone who claims they have known me for years." I had been trying to measure the 'inner love' from the family and friends who said they knew me after my amnesia. I told my Grandmother that is why I didn't get his address to keep in touch with him. It had shocked me speechless and I felt he was sort of shocked by it and we were sort of uneasy about the fact it was so intense. Then that voice came inside me and told me to just walk away from it. My Grandmother spoke about 'physical attraction' and I told her,

"If you would have been standing next to me crying on that road - and seen it and felt it like I did - you would have looked down at my hand and seen me holding a glowing ball of light. It was not my imagination. It was like a snowball that slowly melting inside of me - and the biggest reason I was crying was because the joy that was coming to me from it. Trust me. I think I know the difference between physical attraction and something totally profound that boggles your mind speechless. I just hope I am going to know enough to return that favor to him in my next life - if there is such a thing.

To me, he was like a Doctor who handed me a 'cure' that I needed in that exact moment and time in my life.

I thought it was profound to recall the exact details of that 'past life' encounter so many years ago and realize that 'less can be more' sometimes. I only spent maybe 45 minutes with this person - and yet - I still feel that he had one of the most dramatic impacts on me of any other person I have ever met in this world. I still well up with emotion looking back on the dramatic impact our meeting had on me.

When I look back on this 'missing piece' of the puzzle of reincarnation - and the timeline involved - it was actually the third 'encounter' of this type. The first encounter was the 'bandit' and I was flooded with 'information' to know there was a past life connection. This happened in the winter. At the beginning of the summer, I ran into the past life 'warrior' and I was totally flooded with 'information' and 'knowledge' about our past life connection. In both of those cases - there was no doubt in my mind because details of the past lives had poured into me. In a sense, I felt I had 'spiritual confirmation' and was acting on a firm foundation.

The hitchhiking incident happened at the summer/fall season - and I think the other two incidents had led me to 'speculation' about every single person I met - and wondering if there was a 'missing memory' file and a past life connection hidden away. I think the 'warrior' incident and having a stranger come up to me and say, "you killed me" had a profound effect on me. (Enemies in a past life war zone.) I think I was cautious in thinking 'maybe I didn't want to know too much' about all the past life connections I came across. Wondering if maybe it was best to know - without knowing too much.

I know that when I finished my 'hitchhiking' - I was caught up in so many thoughts about meeting 3 people with past life connections in a short 7 month period.

Are we really strangers to one another on this planet - or - is it all pretense and forgotten memories? I was walking around with a Doctors slip in my hip pocket that outlined my diagnosis of 'retrograde amnesia' and the fact that I was dealing with a medical issue of 'forgotten memories.' If reincarnation was a spiritual fact of life as it was being shown to me - then I felt everyone in the world should be walking around with a 'medical' slip outlining their 'lost memories' to explain to others why they couldn't remember their own past lives.

I feel this was the first time I had to 'deal' with the 'feeling' of a past life association in a blind manner. The feeling was there but neither one of us could 'pull' up any memories relating to the 'when, where, or how' we had an association in a past life. I think this was a stage in my early adult life where I was trying to find a happy medium. On one hand, I didn't want to be bombarded with memories of being someone else and confusing my own 'self-identity' and on the other hand, I didn't want to miss out on a chance to say hello to old friends from another time.

I do feel there was a conscious choice made during this time that I didn't really want to be 'flooded' with detailed memories of past lives and felt that 'profound feeling' was sufficient to accomplish what ever needed to be to keep promises from a past life or promises between the two souls.

This makes the second time in my life when I feel I made a conscious choice to intentionally 'block' past life memories. The first time was when I was 15. Then the amnesia came and I couldn't recall making that choice - so - I went through a small reminder phase - and again at the age of 19, I intentionally decided it was best to keep past life memories blocked from my conscious mind.

I can recall how divided I was after parting company with this 'past life' associate. A part of me wished I could access the 'hidden memories' and a part of me felt it best to keep that lid closed and the contents contained inside. I think it was always the case of the 'grass was greener on the other side.' If I didn't have access to the past life memory - then I wished I did. If I did have access to the past life memory - I wished I didn't.

With all the recent recall, I still feel divided about the issue.

I usually don't pick up hitch hikers, but this happened one time back in the 1980's. On my way home from So Cal I had extra time so I took the long way as I wanted to look for a certain historical spot. I took a back road which was the old highway. There were a few houses as it was a rural area. Suddenly I came upon a guy hitchhiking. He looked to be about 17 or 18. I was the only car in sight. I was going to keep going, but as I passed him I suddenly got a message in my head saying "It's OK." So I stopped and picked him up. It turned out that he needed to go into town to register at the high school. This was around Labor Day and a few days before school started. It only took about 10 minutes or less. I have never had another experience like that.

I haven't hitch-hiked, but I have occasionally said to people "not in this life, but the next". They were people with whom I'd never discussed reincarnation, but felt the "pull" you feel when you know a soul. As they were all men, I sometimes wonder if I may find my "dance card" a bit too full ;) next time around!

I kind of ran into the subject of 'hitchhiking' by accident which triggered the recall of this particular incident - for reflection. I looked alot younger than I was back then and when I told people I had it 'in me' to hitchhike. They all advised me against it for many reasons and that being the main one. I can now understand there was that "pull" in that direction - as destiny calling me. I didn't feel that 'pull' to hitchhike afterwards. I did think afterwards that was the whole purpose of that inner 'urge' that had come upon me like it had.

I've only ever picked up one hitch-hiker. I know about the dangers and promised myself I'd never do it, but for a couple of years before, I had been noticing this car. No reason, it just stood out to me. It was an old Ford Gran Torino. Anyway, I was always seeing this car in traffic no matter where in town I was. One day I saw it in a parking lot. I recognized the guy walking a little ways down the road as the driver. He had a gas-can in hand and his thumb out. I was heading to gas up my old truck anyway, and the nearest station was a couple of miles away, so I pulled over and gave him a ride. He wasn't exactly loaded with cash, so after tanking up my truck I filled his 5 gallon can and refused any money from him. I told him to just help people whenever he can.

I gave him a ride back to his car and never saw him again. Maybe I was always noticing his car for a reason. Maybe something wanted to make sure that when this guy needed help, I would be there to help him. Just weird, I s'pose!

I have helped out a few stranded motorist in my time - and wondered about the 'past life' thing. I wonder if those 'random' acts are coincidence - or - if we could see the full spectrum of our past lives - if we would find a string of occurrences repeating themselves. Like, in this life it is our turn to do the 'good deed' - but in a past life - our former 'selves' were the ones stranded on the prairie somewhere and were the ones being helped with the 'good deed' from another.

The tapestry we weave with our lives is so much more complex than any of us realize. I think Usetawuz is right when he says that we are actors playing roles for each other. A string of reciprocation of good deeds stretching back in time is an awesome thought. I get a strange feeling of vertigo, and time displacement, when I think about it.

Now that's a nice thought! Maybe in years back I was in a tight spot, lost or stranded, and he helped me out, then it was my turn for payback, and yet we remain strangers passing through time. Maybe we'll meet again in a future life and not be such strangers!

This recall led to another similar experience with the same theme hidden in the undertow.

I was passing through a town visiting some relatives. I had one who was handicapped and lived in the low-income housing complex. I was worried about parking my new car there during the visit. When it got dark - I was itching to get out of there. I was walking to my car when I passed by a young man at a payphone - and he was searching his pockets. When he saw me, he was excited and telling me - 'he was having a baby' and needed to call for a ride to the hospital. He looked like a kid himself. I told him to get his wife and put her in the car and I would drive them. It was sort of exciting when he actually came back with a 'big bellied' young girl moaning - and carrying a bag. (I had half expected that he was just trying to con me out of my change.) I felt I found myself in the middle of a medical emergency and turned on my 'flashers' and raced toward the hospital honking my horn at stop lights and watching as traffic pulled out of our way. He was all excited in the back seat. I feel I was just in a hurry to get there and didn't want to have to pull over and deliever a baby in my car.

We pulled up to the emergency drive and honked the horn and was met by a couple of attendants and a wheelchair. I parked the car and found him to make sure they had a telephone he could us to make the call for the family event underway. I was standing there and a thought hit me. I told him, "I will be right back. I got something I want to do before we say our goodbyes."

I ran to my car and drove to the store to buy him a package of cigars. I could tell he was struggling to make ends meet and starting a new family. When I returned to the hospital and said, " I think your going to need these later on," his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. He told me, "I don't know why but I feel it needs to be said. I feel you were meant to be here for this. It was no accident to run into you like I did. It wouldn't have been right - if you weren't here. I feel like your were here for me. Thank you."

It was one of those mystical and spiritual moments. I felt it and I was saying my good byes and was walking away when he shouted out to me, "Wait." He came running toward me and opened the package and handed me a cigar. The minute he did that - I got a profound feeling come over me. I felt he had just kept a promise to me. He must have felt it to because he said, "Did you feel that? Where did that come from?" Just as that happened - one of his relatives came rushing up and the subject got changed.

I later told someone a little of the 'profound nature.' I told them, "I swear I had a flash of a pre-birth like memory. There was an eternal promise between us and we both knew it for a brief moment and could see it in each other's eyes." Who ever I was talking to turned it into 'God' planting a seed for a good deed. The idea of the 'pre-birth' memory was too much for them. So - I never spoke about it to anyone again. I never saw the young man again, but - I have never forgotten the profound experience it was for me. There was that 'tinge' and hint of 'reincarnation' being a part on the event.

In time - we are strangers to one another - but - in eternity - I don't think there is a word for 'strangers' - because there are none. Later, I just told people I felt touched by eternity that day.

Sincerely,

DKing
