"Honey, that never happened."

Has anyone had a memory of something someone swears up and down never happened, or that you know couldn't have happened? Is it possibly PL related, even though you think you remember it involving a specific person/people?

I have this memory of my Mom telling me to close my eyes and go to sleep, or the sand man would come and put sand in my eyes. She tapped her fingers on my face as I slowly fell into a deep slumber.

My mother swears she never told me that, and indeed, she's not the type of person who'd tell tales like that to kids. She was always more straight than that with me - "LB, go to sleep, it's going to be a busy day tomorrow and we're not coming home for a nap." That was her style. So... why on earth do I remember her telling me that so clearly? And the most common version of the folklore is a good thing, not a bad thing, although there is a version where the sandman takes children's eyes out. (According to Wikipedia.) I also doubt my mother would've told me that version.

I also remember being in the hospital (which I was), and a girl telling me a dog - or a doll - bit her. Nobody can explain why I remember that, nor who the person was, and it seems to me, from the memory, that it would've been a visitor.

Finally, I have a memory of looking down the steps and seeing an orange cat. Nobody had an orange cat, but it seems like it was at my aunt's house. (Though I feel like that might have just been a dream.)

Are memories from childhood that don't make sense actually PL memories, or are they just things our brains make up from dreams and musings? I also ask because I did have one memory I was pretty sure had to have been a PL because of its absurdity, but when I talked about it with my Mom, she explained it in a way that made sense. (Basically my mind dramatized a simple memory. ;)) However, these things seem a bit... harder to make up.

Hi Looking Backwards! Although I'm not a trained psychologist, I have often read that the memory does become confused about certain events. There are so many ambient influences in our environment that can certainly add things to one's recollection that were not there before. However, I have very clear memories of things that my sister is totally unaware of, which seem to have occurred in a previous life in the same family. So, it could well be that some or all of your memories could be past life related. Have you investigated meditation or regression to find out more?

I've tried meditation, but it's never really gone anywhere, save odd flashes I'll see that don't necessarily connect to anything, or even make sense.

Absolutely. That's even something I've pointed out when people have recalled PL memories that seem to contradict things, because I do think it can apply to PL memories. (Which helps explain, for instance, why someone might remember something happening in 1920 that involves a car that wasn't on the market until 1935.)

My thing is more that I remember specific things people say never happened, which is confusing. All I can think of is that I've somehow combined PL and CL people so the memories make more sense, or that I shared a PL with some of the same people, hence the memories.

I forgot to mention this, but I also had an incident with a friend where she mentioned something extremely peculiar happen to her as a child. Nothing bad or traumatic, just one of those weird things we do as kids and laugh about as adults. It was very out of the blue. When I mentioned it very soon after, the very next day or something, she had no recollection of telling me what happened.

Has anyone else had anything like this? I'm just curious.

I am the youngest of 5 girls. I was always a very emotional child and I believe we remember very well the things that hit us emotionally.

Grown up I would say "Remember Monie that this or that happened or someone said something" Monie, who is 2 years older, would never remember but one of the older sisters WOULD. I have vivid memories of our house on 15th street and Monie remembers almost nothing.

If you notice....people who remember their past lives usually have died by accident, murder or in war or something very emotionally charged. I don't think we remember much about a quite boring past life where nothing very unusual is going on.

I once died in a fire, was killed by an elephant and died a child of a disease but I don't remember the actual moment of death....I only recall the few minutes ahead with the exception of the child....She was in spirit watching her parents on their way to her funeral.

In this life I saw 2 terrible accidents....both when I was a teenager. I was so upset I prayed and asked God to never let me see another awful accident where people were killed again. I have since seen accidents but everyone is always OK

I often wonder if that is the reason I never see myself die in a past life......I just remember the emotions of the moment...

Grin.....I remember my mother used to say "Why don't you just take things in your stride like your sister Monie" She sure did....her childhood is just a blank.....

My wife reminds me every day of things that I can't believe I've done! Nooooo! That wasn't me!!? Was it?

Hee. Yes, but this was something extremely off the wall, and I mentioned it 24 hours later after she told me the story and she had no idea what I was talking about. I've read here about kids who out of nowhere say strange things and change the subject - i.e. "my other Mommy bought me a pink bike but it broke." It was like that, only an adult and it wasn't that random at the time, just later when she claimed she never said it.

The maddest things turn out to have really happened! One thing I would be suspecting must have been a PL memory or a loony surreal dream happened - and I found out only when I was maybe 12,complaining to my mother I'd had a crazy dream about travelling in a lift up the inside of a mountain. Yet Mum explained that it had really happened - she, my Dad, my sister and I had gone to Durie Hill, in Whanganui when I was 3 years old.. Later, much, when I was 26, I went there again.

So not everything 'impossible' is a PL memory...

We needed to use the phone

I have a memory of going into a house in Salinas (the town where I grew up) and asking them to use the phone. I had assumed this had happened when I was very little and I remember being with my mom. The car had broken down or something and we knocked on their door and asked them to use the phone. I remember standing in their living room next to who I thought was my mom. When I asked her about it said we had never been in that house, and didn't break down in town and didn't ask anyone to use any phone.

I don't know if this is connected but I think it might be... I have strong feelings for the late 60's early seventies (and from the 50 sock hop stuff, especially the crooner songs) and when I was a kid my mom let me watch The Lost Boys and there is a scene where there is a giant poster of Jim Morrison and when I saw that I got the most intense happy feeling. So I said "WHO's THAT?!" and my mom told me it was Jim Morrison. I don't know why but I feel like I have a connection. Maybe a fan? I watched the movie about his life and although I knew it was just a movie, for some reason I was depressed for the rest of that day and the ENTIRE next day. My husband too. A movie has never ever made me feel that sad before. I was actually depressed. Most people think that movie is great. Across the street from the house my mom lives in now in Salinas, is where there managers mom lived, and they would go over there for barbecues (we found that out last year). He died on July 3rd in 1971. On my mom's birthday. Probably just a bunch of things that just 'seem' significant to me. But it is one of my earliest interests. That and the Titanic (I can't swim because my chest tightens up involuntarily, but I love water and wish I could)
