Hurricane Matthew

Hi All,

I'm not changing my avatar for the moment. However, the following satellite image of hurricane Matthew, which is trundling threateningly in my direction, says all that needs to be said about a very dangerous October/Halloween storm that has already taken lives and is headed my way over the next couple of days. PS--Matthew is projected to be a Category 4 by the time it is adjacent my location, and assuming it keeps its pathway up the coast of Florida and doesn't come any further inland, we should be able to ride it out. I'm about 35 miles inland, and keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for your concern, the period from noon tomorrow until around 6 a.m. on Saturday will be interesting, but still hoping that it will stay a bit further offshore. The NOAA keeps shifting the track slightly. So, now they are showing it basically still sliding along the coast parallel to my position. This is not good, but still probably OK since I am 35 miles inland. Time will tell.

PS--Hi John, I will certainly report in, though widespread power outages are predicted, so it may take a while. I'm hoping that somehow these will only impact the coastal zones, but its probable that I will have an interruption--I'm hoping it will be no more than 24 hours. Thanks again for your concern.

PPS--If anyone has not taken a look at that eerie infrared photo of Matthew with its eye over Haiti, you should do so. The photo is not touched up. The upper level clouds show as cool gray, whereas the eye is showing surface temperatures and glows brightly. The "teeth" are the tops of thunderheads in the gap that looks like a bizarre death's head grin (or smirk). An evil looking storm. The death toll in Haiti at present is 136, and still counting. It is a shame. Haiti is a place that has troubles enough without this.

We have family 12 miles inland, but it seems to be missing them. Stay safe! The flooding and lack of power can be way more dangerous than the winds . . .
 
Thanks for concerns to all! Power went out around 11:00 a.m. Friday at my location and was gone for around 52 hours--which seemed like a very long time indeed. (BTW--As I am located in the country, my well water is also powered by electric, so loss of power equals loss of drinking water as well as loss of "flushing" water (to put it bluntly)). So, no lights, no water, and very primitive sanitation. Thankfully, the hurricane took (as they say in American Football) "a lucky bounce" and was farther offshore at my location when it passed than expected. So, we did pretty well overall, despite tropical storm force sustained winds and heavy rain. It felt like a miracle when lights, fans and appliances suddenly started to hum purposefully this afternoon! I'm not sure where the repair was made, but suddenly with no preamble--light, etc. . . . .wow! We forget what a miracle technology is.
