lack of sounds in meditation?

the other day I tried meditating on a scene that came to me ‘out of the blue’ during an earlier meditation. As before, I found myself back in my Great War life, in the military training room, on my own, doodling and looking out of the window, waiting for someone. Someone (a senior officer) comes in, I stand up and salute. Usually this is where the memory fades, but this time I see him walk over to the window and look out. I can see he is talking to me, his mouth is moving under his moustache, but I can’t hear anything. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t deaf (wouldn’t have been let into the military if I was), so why couldn’t I hear anything? Now I come to think of it, I don’t ever seem to hear anything during PL meditation or self-regression. It’s all visual, with an emphasis on light (in this memory there was a strong sideways light, so I’m pretty sure it was mid-afternoon most likely in early summer). Also, there are very rarely any other people in my ‘memories’ either, this one stands out in that there was someone else there. As a guess, I probably just don’t trust myself enough yet to ‘believe’ anything I hear during meditation (still too afraid I’m just making it all up?)

Anyone got any other ideas? Or has anyone else had difficulty hearing things during meditation?

Hi Helz, My self regressions apparently follow the same pattern that yours do. I've never heard a sound. But what caught my attention was the way you described the quality of light. That's always an important part of my self regressions, lucid past life dreams, and important memories from this life. That's what I use as a distinguishing characteristic between real memories and fantasy. There is also emotion attached to "memories" that I feel are real. I don't know if this a valid way to tell the difference, but it's all I have as a guide.

Thank you for the response BriarRose, glad to know its not just me :) You’re right, now you come to mention it, light is an important part of my current life memories too, but sound is less so. Its all about the light! Light at certain times of the year will often invoke a sense of time and place from periods in this life, not specific memories but a feeling of what it was like, what I was doing, the atmosphere and surroundings if that makes sense. Sound doesn’t really come into it, only if there was a song that got played on the radio a lot that I suddenly hear again. I’ll keep en eye out for the light in my dreams, only had a few dreams that could be PL-related, but those that are all have light as an important element now I come to think of it – the sun is rising or setting, or is very intense.

I will also pay attention to the emotional content too. Anxiety means my emotions are pretty numbed or muted much of the time (even for current-life memories), but the more I meditate they seem to be starting to come through as the anxiety gets lessened. I was smiling a lot during my last self-regression (seemed to be on my way to the cinema in small-town America!) and last week there was one self-regression where I could not stop frowning!

Helz, do you think the root of your anxiety lies in a past life experience? If you can figure out the "root cause", my feeling is that the anxiety will disappear.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was! I'll have to see if anything comes up about it, have always been of a nervous disposition as song as I remember, and the 2 lives I remember most would give me good cause to feel anxious (being hit by a train does little for ones confidence!).

Me too. I never hear any sound. Just visual. I've also had the light thing. I read somewhere that humans are visual animals, especially males. So I guess it's true. What about blind people? But there is someone here who is blind and they said they were able to see in their PL memory.

Thanks for the input Argonne :) Yes, humans are visual creatures, only we and the other Great Apes have such excellent colour vision, nearly all other mammals see in shades of grey, green and blue. (Of course, other animals have better vision than we - many birds and insects can see all the same colours as us, plus ultra-violet!). Would explain why light seems to be so important in memory for us.

Thats fascinating about those who are blind but can see in PL memories. I'm sure I read somewhere that some blind people can see in their dreams. I wonder if it is the same for other senses? can deaf people hear in PL memories? What about smell, that can be an important memory-trigger too, but not everyone has a sense of smell, so does smell play an important part in their PL memories?

me too, all of my regressions had no sound.

but i felt sensations and emotions very intensly on that regressions. but most important... i had "stereoscopic" vision... on those regressions. just for the record, i´m blind of one eye.

That is interesting that you could see from both eyes in regression, flashback. That's a question answered. Helz, during my recent regression, I felt very strong pressure behind both ears. I looked that symptom up, and it can indicate anxiety. Not surprising, since I was dying! In my 20's, I would look up at the night sky, and feel overwhelmed by free-floating anxiety. In one life, I drowned shortly after midnight, outside under the stars. I would guess almost all present life anxiety comes from something like this, as we were discussing above. Mine went away completely as I progressed through this life, although the night sky still makes me feel very insignificant!

I'm really not sure if I've heard sound, Hellz. I've certainly been aware of conversations in my regressions, although I'm not sure that counts! When I've remembered these, the visuals seem to have been less clear, I've definitely never seen mouths moving! (Forgive me for repeating myself here, Helz, I know you've heard this, but thought I'd add it to the thread!) When recalling leaving a factory where I worked, during a self regression, I heard one of the girls say "Your Tom's waiting for yer." I also clearly remember shouting the names of my brothers(?) during my Scottish PL meditations. I don't remember hearing any external sounds, like birds, water, wind etc. I'll pay attention next time I try!

Thanks for the replies everyone, always love reading what everyone else thinks and experiences :) Good to know that the 'full cinematic experience' memory isn't the only (or right!) way to access PL memories

Since my last posting I've done some more meditating in preparation for a self-regression yesterday. This time I remembered to listen out and actually heard some things this time, first some birdsong (but can't remember what type of bird), and then later on in the regression, one of the gunners shouting something at me, unfortunately the wind, rain and shell-fire were so loud I couldn't hear what he was yelling. Maybe its a little too blackly humourous to think in the middle of all that, we were just yelling 'sorry, I can't hear what you're saying' at each other ;)

So, maybe hearing is all about practice or maybe a little more 'trust' in our experiences? This regression (Mirrors of Time) said it was ok for the imagination to 'fill in the gaps', so maybe thats where the sounds came from this time?

That sounds like a really productive session, Helz. I think I'll look for that CD. I found it interesting that you heard bird song. I would wager that it's there as background noise a lot of the time in our everyday lives, and we don't always notice it. It's funny how birds and people usually exist in a "parallel reality". We're here, they're here, but we don't usually interact much. Human war zone or not, birds continue with their existence. Sorry - just "musing"!

I’ve always lived in an urban setting in this life, so to me birds are very important as a link with Nature, so I’m always on the lookout for birds or listening for birdsong.

While we’re on the subject of animals, I remember during the battle-scene, thinking ‘where are the horses?’ At the time I was annoyed that my current-life mind was trying to see things that weren’t necessarily there, but now I’m wondering if it was a thought from then? If we’d lost the horses we would have been stuck, that big gun wasn’t going to be moving anywhere without them!

You’re right, the natural world does carry on parallel to us, in this case during war, Nature has no cares for our petty human disagreements. In fact, Nature kept a lot of those who were fighting grounded, and provided a way to ‘escape’ the horrors they were surrounded by. There’s an excellent book called Tommy’s Ark by Richard van Emden that looks at just that. That book was actually one of the many ‘triggers’ for my investigations into this particular PL.

Asking "Where are the horses?", seems like a reasonable thing for someone in the trenches in World War I to ask. I love to hear birds, too, Helz. I once had a white rose bush right outside my living room window. A hummingbird made a tiny nest in it, that rocked like a cradle when the breeze stirred the roses. I watched the egg hatch. I felt like the luckiest, richest woman in the world while this unfolded! You're so right - contact with nature heals and keeps us sane in bad times.

I think WWI was the last war where horses were used. Not counting Poland who thought they were going to be used again and were all prepared with their horse cavalry. After the Germans got started on Sept. 1, 1939 the horse cavalry lasted about two weeks or less.

The sound was actually stronger than the visual in my past life regression...It was a classical symphony but it didn't go with the Native American campground at all...the most vivid scenes in my regression were when were dancing because I was so intensely aware of the sun and the leaves and my friends and family's clothes and faces...But the rest was darker and less vivid; the fishing, and horseback riding I was feeling too responsible to see the light around me. Maybe part of my purpose is to work with love and light in this life? To absolutely LOVE what I do and those I work with?! It's something I'm considering :)

Sorry if I am self-centered...I'm still a teen lol xD

The sound could have been from a different past life.

BriarRose and Argonne, I should probably mention that the other great trigger for me was seeing War Horse at the National Theatre London, soon after it first came out. In a way I'm quite embarrassed to admit that it was a trigger, what with it being a play about animals, and such a famous book/film/play at that. It wasn't the only trigger, but it was a big one. So yea, whenever horses crop up in my memories of the Great War I'm always very, very dubious of them

Sarellah, it could be that the music was from a different PL, but as the emotions evoked were similar it made its way into that memory, like a combination. Its interesting you heard music, not heard any in memories myself, unless birdsong counts :)
