Maybe a PL memory

My 2 year old son, Cameron talks really well for his age. He has a good vocabulary and asks tons of questions. He also tells me there's ghosts here...his words. Anyway this morning he said something that piqued my interest. Maybe he just heard it somewhere else and was repeating. I don't really know. Anyway, the story...
He was watching a cartoon that had characters acting like cowboys, they were wearing 10 gallon hats, rode horses, the works. Cameron was paying attention to it then jumped up and came to me and said "They're in Texas." The cartoon NEVER mentioned Texas and we live in Washington, he's never been to Texas and it's not a part of everyday convo to where he would just know what Texas was. He has a good concept of places though...he knows Gramma Nell and Aunteen (his aunt, lol) live in Illinois and visited here by way of airplane. I explained it to him once and now he just knows it. But I never discussed Texas with him so I wonder if this is something he remembers from another life? Maybe he was a cowboy, lol. He said it as clear as day "They're in Texas". He said it more than once too.

With a good memory, it's possible that he's heard it someplace and remembered. However, in my experience, two year olds usually need an explanation or a visual aid to put cowboys and Texas together. Has he seen the "visit Texas" commercials on TV? Did you ask how he knew that was Texas?

I think I would keep an open mind and write down whatever he says that might relate to his understanding of cowboys in Texas. It is possible his statements stemmed from a past life. With any luck, he'll tell you. :)

Thanks for the reply, Chelle. He may have heard it somewhere else, I'm not sure but I can't think of where. I've never seen the commercials you're talking about so I don't know if he has. I did ask him "what Texas meant" to see if he had any thoughts about it as a PLACE not a description to the cartoon and he just said "cowboys horses there" and then he giggled and said "the Backyardigans in Texas too" The Backyardigans was the cartoon we were watching where the chracters were dressed up as cowboys.

My children are watching that episode of Backyardigans right now! It says in the song "all the way to Texas with" something or other, and they are talking about going to Texas in the cartoon.

Just goes to show us what kids pick up and we don't! :D
