I have a little cousin (my own cousin's child actually) who is 4 years old. Just last night I was visiting family for an early Easter dinner and there were about 14 of us there, including 3 young children. My little cousin was being fussy and was upset about some interaction she'd had with her other two cousins. So her mother held her for a while and tried to calm her down. She sobbed a bit and then looked around the room where we were all sitting and said "who are all these people?" Well we all just thought she was being silly. But I watched her carefully and noticed that she made this type of comment two or three times over the course of 5 or 10 minutes. And if that was all that happened I probably wouldn't have thought much of it. But then as she glanced around the room, she pointedly looked at her grandpa and two of her uncles. While her mother was holding her, she kind of jerked her head around quickly to look at one of her uncles on the couch and then her grandpa sitting in a nearby chair. Her eyes passed over the rest of us almost as though she new us but not the others. My husband and I are the ones who see this little cousin the least of everyone else in the room and he figured she'd asked about who we were. We live out of town while everyone else lives in the same town. But she did not ask about us. She did, however, look at another uncle of hers across the room and said, "I don't know what to call him." Someone said that's your uncle Adam. And then her mom said you can just call him Adam. My little cousin looked a little worried and perplexed is the only way I can describe it. So basically her eyes passed over everyone in the room except her grandpa and two of her uncles. Those three she made a point of pausing and staring at them. It was as though she didn't know who they were. The rest of us she did know. And then of course the most interesting thing was her making a point of looking at the one uncle and saying she didn't know what to call him. He is her uncle by marriage, but has been in the family for about 7 years and he sees this cousin several times a week. So it's not like he's a brand new member of the family! Interesting huh? Thanks for listening. Ann B
