I have a little cousin that I babysit for a lot, and recently he's had this really intense fear of anything to do with anything hot or even just warm. When I take food out of the microwave for him he has to let it get completely cooled off (so there's really no point in microwaving stuff for him, but he wants us too anyway) before he'll even touch it. If it's higher than room temp he jumps back and screams "too hot!!".
A few nights ago I heated up some chicken nuggets for him and he did the same thing, and even after they'd cooled he was reluctant to touch them, so I told him they were cool enough, I even took a bite of one myself to show him. He looked at them and then told me he just didn't want to touch them because he didn't want his skin to turn black like before...even though he's never been burned, and I don't think he's ever seen anyone with serious burns like that. I asked him when he'd had black skin (knowing he'd never gotten burned I was curious to see what he'd tell me). He just kept staring at the nuggets and mumbling about how he "needed everything to be cool because he didn't like when it was hot and his skin turned black, because that hurt a lot but now it's over and he doesn't want it to happen again..."
What should I do now? It sounds like he could've had some fire accident in a past life...do I try to explain to him that he's ok now? He only just turned 5, I don't think he'd understand at all. Do I try to talk to him more about it?
