My Niece

I just heard a strange story from my sister.
It seems that out of the blue in the past few weeks, her daughter (four years old) has been saying some strange things.

My niece is a very smart little girl. She has an amazing vocabulary for a four year old, and she always talks very properly. My sister said that one day they were sitting in the living room and her daughter told her a story. She said a long time ago she was cooking marshmallows in her oven and her house caught on fire. Then she said that the angels cut a hole in her ceiling and took her out.

My sister says that every time she says this, it is always the exact story (no variations). And when my sister asked her to tell my mom the story, she kept saying no, that it happened a long time ago.

I think this freaks my sister out a little bit. Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

Welcome Raisingirl.

Well, the fact that your niece's "story" never varies is certainly an indication that she is describing a memory. Have you read Carol's book? Another sign that children are not making it up is a matter-of-fact tone.

Many children have done exactly what your niece is doing---described past lives. However usually in western society, they are either mocked, ignored, or told that it is their imagination. The best thing that your sister and the rest of the family can do is simply listen and not negate your niece's words in any way.

You mention something about "every time she says this"---does this mean your niece talks about it often? If she does, does she bring it up at particular times? That is, could she still be bothered about what happened? You don't say how often she discusses it. On the other hand, perhaps the very fact she remembers it induces her to talk.

Again, welcome.

I guess she has told my sister this story a couple of times. I am not sure how often she talks about it. As far as I know, this is the only story she ever says, too. I will definately recommend the book to my sister. Thanks.

Hi raisin girl,
I would just like to say that it would be a good idea to suggest to your sister that she keeps a detailed diary of what her daughter says...dates, times of day how she seems in herself, what body language she presents etc. It may be that she just mentions somethings a couple of times and then that is the end of it or it could be, as with my own daughter it could go on over several years and there is no way that you will remember every detail.
I think that it is also very important to let the child know that you believe in them....they need at least one person with whom they can feel comfortable with, to speak of these memories. I strongly believe that if past life memories are recalled spontaneously by a young child, without prompting or searching by the adult, then there is a reason .It may be that the issue is with the child or, and perhaps this is more controversial, maybe the issue is with a supporting adult in this life. I say this because for me the fact that my youngest child had spontaneous past life recall meant that I had to confront the whole issue of reincarnation which up until that point in my life had not been a consideration at all. I therefore strongly feel that she retained memories of past life issues so that I could be given the chance to work with her over the whole area of past lives and for this I will be always eternally grateful.
I am glad that you have found this site...let us know how things develop...there are some brilliant people here who will support and guide you and your neice.
With love and light.
