Negative thoughts from a past life.

I am starting to get a glimpse of a life that took place sometime before 1850. I am picking up thoughts relating to racial prejudice that are completely opposite to how I think today. The negative thoughts make me scared to explore the memories. How do I get past this?

Patrick,

I'm the poster child for this sort of thing, so I'll take a stab at it.

First, keep in mind that you are looking through a window at history from today. And throughout history, including today, people have hated others for all sorts of ridiculous reasons.

A classic Trek episode comes to mind (I have a Star Trek episode for everything) where there was a planet and on that planet, everyone was half black and half white - (not mixed, but they used body paint down the midline) there were two groups. One group was black on the right side, white on the left, the other white on the right, black on the left. And the two groups hated each other because they were basically mirror images.

Today bigotry and prejudice are considered bad things (except where they aren't-hello ethnic cleansing), but back in 1850 or 1930, they were considered 'normal' and acceptable among most people. Heck, in 1850, black people were quite legally enslaved and treated as farm animals. And most people thought that was just fine.

But when you look back, and are receiving thoughts, memories, etc., from a life where things were different, it can be very confusing, because the you that you are now, thinks differently from the you that you were then.

Don't be scared of those thoughts, just think of them as being 'out of date'. Let them flow, let them pass over you, make note of them because they part of who you once were, but they can't affect you now.

Over the years I have trained myself to shut out any "Hate". When a hateful thought is part of my memory  I automatically shut it down.

Hi Patrick,

I am picking up thoughts relating to racial prejudice that are completely opposite to how I think today.

That’s a good thing, Patrick. Obviously – you learned a lesson from that life. Think of it as a positive. Soul growth happens from all angles – that which we consider “bad” and that which we consider “good.” It's what we take out of them and apply to our current lives -- that is the important thing.

The negative thoughts make me scared to explore the memories.

If you are not ready – then perhaps exploration isn’t the right option. Perhaps you need to think about WHY you want to explore these memories. What is the purpose? What is your motivation? Is it something that will benefit you NOW?

Healing happens at many different levels as well -- it's not necessary to get deep into the memory -- to heal from it. Sometimes acknowledging -- and releasing it -- goes a long way.

The trick is --- remembering this is a different life and whatever happened then – happened and is over.

I'm the poster child because I spent 13 years in denial, and it took a regression and a blessing with some serious mojo to get me to the point where I can listen to the thoughts of my past self without freaking out.

It may sound easy in theory, but in practice it's very difficult being the observer.

Although I don't recommend it because at some point you will probably want to heal the breach created, thinking of that past you as a separate and distinct person who isn't you, can give you the distance and objectivity needed to access the memories of that other you without letting it upset you.

It worked for me, but it took a minor miracle to heal the separation between mynowself and mythenself. Which is why I don't recommend it.

I have read some of the “bad guy” posts and that has helped. This is the fourth life a have recalled and my first bad guy. All of my memories have stared out with a death. I just received a memory of what may be the death of my bad guy. The vision was of a black person being severely beaten with what appears to be my bare hands it ends with a great pain between my shoulder blades. I think some one shot the bad guy me in the back

I now understand why the hateful thoughts where so strong. I believe I was in the middle of a slave rebellion. The hate was part of what I was feeling while fighting. A very dark skinned man wearing a white shirt with full sleeves pointed a single shot flintlock pistol at me. The gun misfired as I attacked him in an attempt to get my pistol back. I took the gun from him and laid it gently on the ground. While I pounded the man with my fists another black man, with the same kind of shirt, came up behind me. As I turned my head to see who was there the man fired a flintlock musket at my back. The ball hit my right shoulder blade. I did not die that day; I may have died a few days latter. I lived long enough to see four people hanged. The hanging included the man I was beating and a small boy who may not have been older than six or eight.

It’s good that you are finding a deeper understanding for the reasons WHY you feel as you do. You cannot change past life events – but you can change your perceptions of them.

Imo, memories surface for a reason. I believe – that one of the greatest things we can do for ourselves – is to forgive. That means loving ourselves enough to say – okay, this happened in the past, I accept it, I forgive – and I let it go.

Forgiveness -- is about releasing yourself from the burden of holding onto the emotions. The process is different for everyone.

I think – it’s also important to say “I forgive you” to whoever hurt us in the past. You may not know them in this life – but within the act of forgiveness comes release.

Forgiveness frees energy for focusing on the here-and-now.

The process of examining past lives is a healing process for me. Not to long ago I carried around a lot of anger that was waiting to boil over at any stressful moment.
During the last two years I have been able loose most of that negative emotion and become easer to live with. Understating who I was before (and believing it) helps me undo the anger.

Interesting thread, strange that I had never seen it before. Not so much now, but a few years ago I also had occasions when a past life thought would just come randomly and step in in my regular life. One time I also had one similar to what the OP mentioned, it made me feel strange because the person my thought was directed to was someone I considered a good acquaintance. It was 2006/7, I had just started researching past lives. Now I' m not too sure if I am just blocking all my Pl thoughts and they are not coming to my consciousness or I am integrating all my Pl thoughts without judging where they come from.Just by the way, most of my thoughts were usually related to human evolution and physiology.

They tended to appear as ideas, coming strongly out of nowhere, but when analyzed, they seemed very outdated.

That sounds like a very constructive way to look at things to me - ie to regard a past-life persona as "MeThen", but, in this century, I am a different person and am "MeNow".

As stated before, I have no memories of previous lives....just some inklings. I have an inkling, for instance, that in a previous life (presumably the last one then?) that I was a bit "grand" English Edwardian Lady and therefore totally used to taking it for granted that my wishes would be obeyed and fair enough to expect people to act as servants to me and that "my lot" was obviously to have an Easy Life. I suspect, by the standards of THAT time, I wasn't at all unreasonable, but I accept that, in this lifetime, its not acceptable to think/act this way and I mustn't do so (not that I'd have the chance anyway on the low income level I've always had this time round...darn it).

On the other hand, I have a (pretty recent) inkling that I might have been a "hillbilly" in the Appalachian Mountains....Those mountains certainly look extremely attractive when I check out images of them....but I imagine that would have been one hard/dirt-poor life logically (and could certainly understand if I had chosen to be Edwardian Lady AFTER dirt-poor/powerless/bored out of skull Hillbilly Life.

Somewhat "sublime to ridiculous" to think of those two lifetimes I have a feeling I had set against each otherLOL

It's interesting that you had two contrasting lives, back-to back, Ceridwen. That was a methodical way to sample ways of being - almost scientific, like you made a study guide, then followed it. My choices seem to be random, but I might try your more orderly method of selection next time. I know you plan to stay "at home" - if we see each other, remind me before I dart off again!

Briar Rose, I have certainly made a mental note to take a chance, if I see it, of meeting you here/on Other Side as I think we would understand each others ways of thinking.

Tell ya' what...lets make a date to meet each other on the Other Side an exact 50 years from now (assuming you aren't so anxious to get back to Earth promptly for another life).LOL I guess both our current incarnations will be dead by then? I certainly will be (as I would be over 100 by then if still around...) and I'm guessing we aren't too far apart in age.

Orderly method of deciding...hmmm...well...a slightly cynical little take on this current life of mine went, at one point, "Okays...I have the chance to be in a Royal Family (ie by marrying into it). Ah...what the heck? Blow that..been there...done that...why repeat the experience this time round? No point.....Lets go for something new to me". LOL

I get negative thoughts every now and again from a past lives.

Sometimes, it really grips with all it's might.

In those lives did some really terrible things

which I probably won't really discuss here.

Too much, guilt.

Agreed.

I'm a rather firm believer of the concept 'Our experiences build us'. Granted, this comes with some small print, 'If we let them'. There are some ideas and residual feelings that I've managed to let go of too, but looking back over past life personality traits and actions and being sort of disappointed with at least a couple of things is something I sort of think is normal. In these previous lives where we've had mindsets that we might disapprove of now, it's important to note that the circumstances were different, the environments were different and even the way we were raised were probably different too. Different societies having different moral codes is one thing, but we all grow up and make up our minds about things as we live life and the things we make part of ourselves. This stuff might be different these days. That's fine, I think, and I try to acknowledge the fact that perhaps the way I acted 'back then' was due to something I experienced that taught me acting so or thinking so was successful in some way. In retrospect, maybe those weren't the best choices or mindsets to have. I'm sure we've all done stuff we aren't proud of.

Nowadays I'm fortunate enough to be able to have those glimpses back and notice those things and say "Hey, I don't want to be like that any longer," and so perhaps be able to think with a different head on my shoulders. In fairness, I've done this looking back on myself in elementary school, and so I think it can apply and work over lifetimes, too. I don't think I had much awareness of past lives in the past life I did find and so I don't think I had the luxury of such introspection, and so perhaps I wasn't aware of the choice I could have had on some level in letting my experiences affect me.
