From Kevin Ryerson's "Spirit Communication: The Soul's Path":

The Concept of Karma

... The Buddhist principle that in order to transform ourselves in the here and now we must eliminate our ego is clearly stated in the Buddhist Four Noble Truths:
All life contains suffering.
All suffering is based on desire.
All desire arises out of the ego.
The way to eliminate desire is to eliminate the ego.

According to the model we’ve been working with, as well as the Buddhist model, all of the events from childhood and past lives that contribute to our current circumstances are referred to as our “karma.” When we talk about transforming ourselves, or transcending our limitations from childhood and past lives, we’re talking about overcoming our karma, or eliminating our ego. Spirit once said that even as the events in our childhood shape our adult personalities, so in turn, events or karma from past lives shape entire lifetimes. Our past lives are merely the childhood of the soul.

We commonly think of karma as a system of rewards (“good karma”) and punishments (“bad karma”). Most of us are more familiar than we wish to be with what we think of as bad karma. ...

Bad karma gives us very little freedom because it sets obstacles in our path. Good karma affords us lots of freedom because the road always seems wide open. But whether we’re dealing with bad karma, and very little freedom, or good karma, and lots of freedom, we’re still dealing in degrees of freedom. Enlightenment, or ultimate realization, is total liberation, total freedom. Bad karma and good karma both tie us to conditional mind because they cause us to judge ourselves. ... This is the wrong perception. It’s a form of divine behaviorism—condition and response. It’s functioning from the basis of the ego.

To rise above this ball and chain, we have to eliminate the ego. The only way to eliminate the ego is to go outside of it. And what lies outside the ego is God. Karma has only one value—to increase our understanding of our true nature as children of God. Once we understand who we are, we don’t need to create karma, either positive or negative. Once we understand who we are, karma is eliminated, because its only purpose is to increase our understanding. The reason for every experience in our lives is to increase our understanding. The fulfillment of karma is synonymous with enlightenment, and enlightenment is remembering who we are, remembering our own true nature.

So, transformation isn’t a process of accumulating good karma or avoiding bad karma, it’s a process of total liberation. It is rising above our relative judgments and dualistic thinking. And this total liberation can come only from one source, our inner authority, and by knowing who we are. This is why I suggest we include in the Four Noble Truths that all life contains “experience” rather than suffering. All life is a continuum of experience. Most experiences arise out of desire. “I want to experience this,” “I can’t wait to experience that.” When we eliminate the desire to experience something, and just experience it and flow through it, our understanding is increased. As the desire for experience is eliminated, so are our attachments to good and bad karma and our value judgments of ourselves. The ego, or the conditional identity, is then transcended and we become what is left over, which is God.

This knowledge of ourselves as part of God is the only discipline we need. Discipline is cutting away what we don’t need. The only thing left, once we cut away everything we don’t need, is God. Then that energy can flow into us. When we’re agonizing all the time over such mind-bogglers as “Who am I?” and “What’s wrong with me?” we’re not flowing in our God-realized selves. When we’re agonizing over things, or, conversely, congratulating ourselves over our many accomplishments, we’re not getting things done. Once we just dive into the flow of an experience and go for it, our anxieties seem a waste of energy. When we’re empowered in ourselves and in our identities, we just experience what’s there, because there’s no ego involved.

The elimination of the ego isn’t the suppression of who we are, it is the expansion of who we are, the transformation of who we are. We become altered in the light of this greater heritage, this greater belief about ourselves as unlimited beings. It is only we, ourselves, who hold to our current circumstances.
So, here is the key. We’re not here to fulfill good karma or bad karma. We’re not here to accumulate merit points or atone for past sins. Karma doesn’t mean that we must endure a series of unchangeable circumstances because of things we’ve done in the past. We’ve created karma, or results of actions in past lives, for no other purpose but to increase our understanding. And understanding can ultimately transcend our karmic circumstances, which arose out of our ignorance.

The law of karma is the law of return. Anything we put out will return to us. If we do something negative, there’s no sense guilt-tripping ourselves, because guilt only locks us into the action, and into the past. It’s better simply to acknowledge our action and increase our understanding about it so that when it comes around again we can handle it more positively.
If we put out positive thoughts, they’ll return to us, so it’s worthwhile to do what we perceive as positive for one another. But we can’t do it out of the motivation to ward off bad karma. The truly transformative principle is our understanding of who we are. Once we understand that we’ve created everything in our lives to increase our understanding of who we are, we then begin to fulfill our purpose. When we understand that karma exists strictly to increase our understanding, the karma itself is fulfilled. Out of our understanding, we realize that we’re unlimited beings, that we are part of that being called God. And this is the human condition.
