New York Newsies

Does anyone know if there are any records of real life newsies?
Any names or anything? It's just that on the dvd of the musical of the same name, they have a "true history" part of the disc, and there is this group picture, and in that picture is a boy, and whenever I see this picture, he sticks out like a sore thumb to me. When ever this picture is shown, I actually have to work to look at the other newsies, for all I can see is this boy. He isn't very pretty, and he looks miserable, and I think that he is me.

Is there any way I can find out who he is?

Hi,

I assume you are referring to newsies -- peddlers of the papers run by Joseph Pulitzer, William Randalph Hearst, and other giants of the newspaper world - 1899?

You could contact the papers for records I would imagine. Have you tried BING.COM to search for records? The new search engine is pretty good.

Before searching though - I would do meditations and or regressions for the little things you can verify later. Experience the PL first - then research it.

Yes, that's it. 1899...

I have had a past life experience around this time...though it's not really an experience, I've just always known about it. When I was little, I always used to think that I should've been a boy. In this life. My sister didn't want another brother though, so...hey, I'm a girl...(which suddenly feels very strange to type).

I have posted about this life before, though I am sure it is a very old thread by now. I have had scattered memories surrounding this life I think, or maybe even multiple lives where I was a boy and a young man.

The youngest memory I have is of watching my mother die, the veins on her wrists slit open by a gang of five, burly- most likely very drunk men- because even at ten years old, after watching her die, I was able to knock out four and possibly kill one. After that, I left the house to calm myself down, then returned to bury my mother's body, said a little prayer over her then ran away to the south and west for a little while.

There is then a memory of pure adrenilene rush, and running very, very fast, and clutching a bottle that rattled. Pills, I think it was, and I had stolen it from a drug store, because I didn't have the money and my mother or my sister, or something like that was very, very sick. There was a chain-link fence, and it could've been a dead end, but I trust the bottle of pills into my pocket and jumped at it. This whole memory had the sounds of agressive dogs barking and men shouting. I was in my early teens at the time, and I was climbing up this fence as fast as I could. I couldn't stop, otherwise I'd be caught, and there was no way I could help her then. My eyes were blue and I was very thin. If I sucked my belly in, you could see my spine, though I never did. As I got to the top of the fence, I realized my hands were bleeding, and I felt pain because the top of the fence was sharp, like someone had just cut it off and didn't solder it down to roundness. It was in between two buildings, and it was abut two storeys high. I looked down and took a breath. I closed my eyes and mentally reminded myself to bend my knees when landing, and jumped.

There wasn't much impact at all. It was like I was falling one second, then suddenly, I was just standing, like I hadn't even jumped, though I did stumble forward a step. I jerked my head around to look behind me, my blonde hair getting in my face. I was terrified, but I knew I was safer now. I turned and kept running.

The last bit I remember is of when I died. I was in my later teens, probably the sane boy from when I was running. The pills I had stolen helped a lot. I was looking up at the night sky and daydreaming. I had a job at a resturaunt, where I was a waiter, and I was always very quiet. I was thinking about how beautiful the stars were, when Cook shouted my name, and I started (jumped), and I fell backward from where I was balancing on a thin railing, two storeys high onto a brick alleyway...pavement or road or something. The lighting was beautiful, and I felt that my body was broken, and I was going to die. Cook screamed when she saw me fall, and everyone who heard her rushed to the railing that I had been sitting on, looking down at my broken body with terror. I think my name had been Jon, or something like that, cause that was when my friend, many years younger than me shouted my name and ran down to me. There were stairs on the side of the building. This resturaunt and all the people working here...it was the first place I had ever really felt at home and loved and happy. I had a family here.

My friend was crying. Really bawling his eyes out, and when he got to my side, he didn't know what to do, so he just kneeled there, looking at me and crying. I had always looked after him since I had first met him. There was something differnt about him. He didn't really like to socialize, because he was always afraid. Henry, his name might have been.

I told him to be strong, and then I died and flew away.

Sorry that this is so long. The memories just came back a little clearer to me as I was writting.

Thanks for sharing all of that. I could just picture it right along with you. :) How did you figure out it was the late 1800s and 1899 to be exact? Was this the same boy that you associate with the newsies? Do you think any of these people are with you in this life? Your mother or the other boy from the restaurant?

Hi dreamer!

Thanks for sharing! Your memories are incredibly vivid - I wonder how it felt to remember all that. It must have been very emotional, there's such intensity in those moments you describe!

Like Alaska, I'm also curious to know if you have been able to identify any of the people who were with you then in this present life?

Hey Alaska. I had always just known that it was around that time. It's just something I knew. I didn't actually know that it was 1899 exactly, but when the date was mentioned, I felt that kind of resonance you get when your spirit/soul knows that something is true.

The same boy...I don't know...I just know that that boy was very familiar to me, and that I wasn't going to be a newsie for very long, and that I didn't really like to have friends back then. Felt like they held me back when I was trying to run away. So if anyone got too attached to me, I'd just leave in the middle of the night without telling anybody, when everyone was asleep. Even if someone saw me leaving. I think my nickname must've been Wanderer or something like that.

Do I know any of those people in this life? Oh yeah, definately. I made sure I had the same mum again for this life. I remember being up in the clouds and everything, waiting for the right moment, and I didn't even go into what I had thought of as Heaven back then, waiting outside the gates, out of sight, 'cause I thought that if I went in, I wouldn't be able to get out. So I just waited, on my own, looking down, trying to see when she had come back.

I remember this very well. I wrote it down for my mum for one Mother's day when I was little, titled "Why I chose you".

I dived down through the clouds when I felt that little timer in my heart click into place, and I flew down, soared down to find her, my mother.

Then I saw a family. A young mother in the height of her mothering years (like- I have kids and can have more), with her husband walking to her right, and her daughter- the oldest- walking to her right, and two little boys in front of them, who they were keeping a very close eye on because it was dark. One is older than the other, slightly taller than the little guy and had dark hair.

The little guy had bright red hair and was very giddy, like he was on a sugar rush or something, but all I saw was my mother. She was kind of differnt. Really at peace and truly happy, getting on with her life with the man she loved. In my past life, I hadn't had a dad, so I was happy for her, but didn't really know the situation personally.

'Momma' I tried to get her attention, but she didn't hear me, walking on, and I realized they going out to a restuaunt for dinner, and I was slightly miffed that she 'ignored' me, so I jumped in front of her and said the same thing.

'Momma' she walked into me, and I didn't come out the other side, like ghosts do. I was born 9 months later.

My friend Noah, I think, was my friend back then, probably my only friend, but then again, he could be my brother, though I died before he did.

You know what? I just thought...I think that resturaunt that they went to was- might've been- the same one where I died.

Sorry if I just gave you more than you bargained for, but information just comes out of me as I write.

W.A. Heart. The only one I really 'remembered' per se, was the memory where my mother died. that was emotional, but it was all dulled, like I knew I wasn't re-living it. Just a memory I had forgotten. I remember the fear ('Momma, what's happening?' 'Shhhh...be quiet...') -as we hid behind the door as the men were coming. The fear when she hid me under that bench. ('Hide!' she whispered looked around desperately. 'Under there!' she took my shoulder and pointed to the bench.) I didn't want to leave her, so she took me and pushed me under it, making sure I scrunched up as small as I could, even though that wasn't really a problem because of my size. The men were at the door. ('Momma!' I whispered, terrified, crying.) Momma looked at me. ('I love you.' I could see the heartbreak in her eyes as the men started breaking down the door. 'Momma!') I just saw the look in her eyes before she jumped up just as the door broke down.

After everything happened, tied to that chair, just before they killed her, she looked at me and mouthed the words: 'I love you.' then she died.

After I came back to this world after remembering that, I felt so sad, and I understood why I had been so protective of my momma in this life. My hand that had been resting on the rocking chair next to me before- I realized, was now gripping it, so I loosened the hold.

When I was little, 'I love you' was the first thing I learned how to write, and I was obsessed with telling my mother I loved her, because I didn't get a chance to before. I'd find finger paints and write it on big sheets of paper, and when she was on the porch having a tea party I would hold it up to the window and tap the glass so that she would look over and see it, my little fingers still crusted with dried watercolors, because it was- and is- the most important thing to me to let my mother know I loved her. Then I'd see her smile.

Your words have truly touched my heart. Thank you so much for sharing!

I'm delighted that you found your Mom again in this life. I wish you all the best!

How does she feel about all this? Have you ever discussed it with her?

Thank you

Welsh

Wow thank you for sharing all that. When I write, too, things just pop up and come out that I hadn't thought of or realized before too. I wanted to ask too if you've talked with your mom about any of this?

I haven't really...I think that- just for her own comfort- she wanted it just to be a strange little story her young daughter wrote for her way back when. I wouldn't really want to be reminded of something like that either, if I was in her place. Leaving your child behind to face the dangers of life back then when you died....

Anyways, I believe I've remembered my nickname. Ghost. Because of my reluctance to attach to people, I was never in one place too long, passing through places like a ghost. I never really liked the nickname, but it stuck to me like glue. That's why I eventually 'settled down' at the resturaunt.

Thank you W.A. Heart. I'm glad you found something in my memory that touched you.

I'm going to try and find ghost at bing.com. I'll report back as soon as I find something.

No Luck...

Hey, it's me again... I can't seem to find the records. I wouldn't know how to contact the papers for the records. It'd be a little too awkward for me, since I don't know what to do, and when I tried bing.com all it came up with was stuff from movies...

I dunno if anyone could help me...but I really would appreciate it if you could.

Thank you.

Hi - This is not a written record except it does give a lot of information in the picture.

NY 1921 - The picture presents African American boy selling The Washington Daily News - sign on his hat reads, "Have you read The News? One cent" - headline reads "Millionaire tax rends G.O.P.".

Wow... Deborah...

When I saw that picture, my breath caught in my throat. I may have known that boy in passing, and he might've been one of the ones who tried to follow me, and so I was more determinded to lose him somewhere. Hopefully somewhere he'd be safe.

To this day I am like that. I don't like people following me. I don't mind people showing me the ropes, but once I get the hang of it, I do it on my own. Like- I don't like shopping in a group and having to be pulled in many differnt directions. I do what I want to do, and then I'll go find them, but if I can't- and if I know they're safe- I'll leave.

He does look familiar... somehow...

I can't seem to see the Alabama picture you posted, I'm afraid to say Deborah. :( Sorry.

And Thank you. :)

Not to threadjack you, but reading your story jogged a recent present life memory, as in from last week.

I was on vacation that week, and my husband and I got to reminiscing about our childhoods.

I told him about a pair of kids I had seen when I was younger, standing in front of a supermarket, selling papers and calling out major stories and sports scores, peddling those papers Old School. I thought it was awesome, and said I had often wondered what ever happened to those two kids.

He told me about his brother's paper route and how he'd help him out. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but he told me how paper routes are rip-offs. His brother was forced to buy more than he could sell, which put him operating at barely breaking even. After seeing an old movie with the Newsies shouting out the headlines, they would do that same thing, setting up shop in front of a busy supermarket and hawking papers like crazy. They turned a profit for some time before moving on to other jobs.

Turns out one of those kids was now married to me!

I don't know how you'd find out the names of anyone who wasn't famous. I do get flashbacks whenever I see an image of a newsie, but not that I was one. Just more like they were a defining part of the scene.
