Not A Memory...

... But it was a good example of how I sort them out.

I was in a dream. I was a young boy, maybe 12, and mother was just not into this Revolution thing. No son of hers was going to go get shot just because some bunch of merchants in Boston had gotten their knickers in a twist. However, on this day none other than General Washington himself was passing through town! In spite of her rantings I ran out to see. I was hoping only for a glimpse of this veritable God-Made-Flesh. Instead I wound up actually standing right next to him as he sat atop his horse! I was gobsmacked! A line from Yankee Doodle popped into my head "...Twice as big as all outdoors, I thought that he was bigger..." He actually noticed me and smiled at me! Someone told me he didn't usually flash such an unguarded smile and I figured it was because I looked like a star-struck fool. The dream ended as the General and his men continued on their way.

When I woke up I had no particular emotion ringing except for amusement. I know very well that is how I would have acted. I'm a history buff and a raging patriot, and Washington is one of my heroes. What provoked this dream and drew so heavily on my existing store of knowledge is that I had been studying the Constitution the night before. Washington's name was mentioned a lot in the first section of the study, so I should have expected it.

No residual emotions, not even much beyond enthusiasm and awe during the dream, so I'm going to file this one right there with the "Meeting Thomas Jefferson at Starbuck's" dream. (And what a conversation THAT was!)

Just thought I'd share an example of something that didn't hold up under scrutiny!

Thanks for sharing Shiftkitty

Are you sure there were not even elements of a past life memory in that dream? It strikes me as a bit odd that it was just an ordinary dream, yet you were the opposite sex in it? That's not usually something that an everyday dream would consist of. I do believe that sometimes, past life memories and ordinary dreams can become 'intertwined'

I relate more to men than I do to women, so it's not unusual for me to dream of being male. A Smoki medicine man once told me that I had a 'male spirit'. In so many words I should basically give up trying to "be a girl" if I wanted to walk in balance. That's not to say I should turn to lesbianism, which definitely isn't my bag, only that satin and lace would never be my style so much as chrome and steel. Thankfully I have a husband who wasn't interested in the dainty, delicate type!

Even the level of detail doesn't surprise me much. I love studying the Revolution period and have thought much about what I would be doing if I, in my current body and personality, lived back then (Shockingly to this red-blooded American patriot, I think I'd be a Loyalist! Better the devil you know, I guess...)

I think I have been male in more incarnations than I have been female. I grew up surrounded by a male-dominated environment, but I got mixed messages all my life. I was supposed to be quiet and obedient like a good little girl, but by golly I'd better be ready to do the work of a man (and then go back and be quiet, I suppose). Yeah, I can sense you guys cringing, especially the women on this site, but it was very sexist upbringing and I fought it tooth and nail. Where that fight came from I have no idea. You'd think I'd just accept it as the way things were since it was from birth.

Gender switches in dreams aren’t uncommon for some people although some never experience them. It probably just depends, as Shiftkitty says, how open we are to the idea. Some women have erotic dreams from the prospective of a man which probably springs from fantasies of ‘what would it be like…?’ Mostly I’m just me in my dreams but occasionally I can be almost anyone including fictional characters and people still alive. Smeagol, for example and I know I wasn’t him! ;) Or genderless sci-fi characters if I've been reading sci-fi novels. And just last night, after listening to a lot of music and being very tired, I dreamt I was an unspecified male band member with Bon Jovi. :cool

I feel ya on that one ShiftKitty. Every psychic tells me of my masculine energy and that I have been a male in almost all my lives except this one and a few more current lives. I cant relate to too many women and I have always been very independent - I provide for myself, dont depend on men, etc. Also, the way you describe having to be a good little girl but being ready to do the work of a man describes my upbringing.

Sometimes things work themselves into our dreams like that, but sometimes they can also serve as a memory trigger....

Sometimes, yeah. I know I had a life in America during the Revolution, but this dream didn't depict it. Gut instinct says so.

Shiftkitty, Now I myself had a life during the American Revolution and do think it was up towards Massachusetts which have never been to in this life. Maybe we knew each other? Thanks for sharing this dream .... interesting!

That would be cool! Total icing on the cake since I know you in this life (at least on the internet) as well!

Your method of separating regular dreams from past-life recall resonates with me. I once had a dream in which I was the Welsh goddess, Ceridwen. She is the Crone, the keeper of the cauldron, and the mother of poets. I happen to be the mother of poets (some rather fine ones), but it would be quite ridiculous to presume that I am a reincarnated goddess! I think the dream was significant, and interesting, because at that time, I had no conscious knowledge of Ceridwen. As to past lives, that name wasn't commonly used-the first recorded instance was around 1887. However, she was also the goddess of rebirth, so there may be some deeper layer of meaning there.
