Old Photographic references

Something about the eyes on both girls...such sadness, and so young to have experienced such sorrow. Novices to become nuns...but at 8 or 9 years old? Yikes. If someone could tell me what it says at the bottom and in what language - I would be forever grateful. It was suggested to me that it was possibly written in the cyrillic alphabet. I have a feeling somewhere in that hand written note is an important message. Perhaps someone has memories of becoming a nun at such a young age - or a story to tell?

What happened to the picture of the children that you are referring too? I can't seem to find it. Was a post deleted somewhere?

How simple Christmas use to be....This image is of children making Christmas decorations....in the year 1900. I thought perhaps some may enjoy the nostalgia.

I googled "1937 Volkswagen" and found this image. But Google images doesn't always stick to the terms, so maybe it's the 40s. But the basic style is the same except it's a different color.

The main thing I noticed was it has no rear window. I've never seen that.

Doesn't seem to have any trunk either, it looks like the radiator's on the back (because of the grill).

The original VW's had air cooled engines, no radiator. That's a major reason why they were so cheap. But they were also noisy and lacked power. The beetle was great for running around town, to work, etc. But going up a mountain was another story. They were cheap to repair and got very good gas mileage for the time. But the air cooled engine was discontinued in the 1980's. It didn't do very well when air conditioning was added to the cars. The final nail in the coffin was the air cooled engines could not pass smog testing. Today's VWs all have standard water cooled engines with radiators. There is an auto repair shop in Germany who is converting old Beetles into electric cars. They take out the old air cooled engines and install electric motors and lithium batteries. He is not old enough to remember what they sounded like, but his older customers and neighbors have told him they were loud. There is a video of this either on YouTube or the German TV network website DW.de

People my age have to look at the speedometer to see how fast we are going. Without the noise of the older cars it's hard to tell how fast you are going. Maybe you are remembering the old cars from somewhere? One major reason cars are quieter now is they have been redesigned to cut wind resistance. Wind resistance had a big impact on gas mileage. The whistling of the wind going by was a major cause of the noise in older cars. Newer cars are designed like airplanes, no sharp edges sticking out. Everything is smooth and/or curved.
