past life problem?

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place. I'm looking for some help. My daughter who is 5 is acting very strangely. When she was almost three she almost died and had to have emergency bowel surgery. Now she asks questions about when she dies and comes back again will I still be her mum? Now she has started getting us to taste her food every time she eats in case it has been poisoned. All the time. It gets worse if someone mentions chemicals or poison. She freaks out. I'm beginning to think it is a past life issue. Has anyone any ideas? What should my next step be. We have been to gp who referred her to camhs (child and adolescent mental health services) they discharged her saying she was normal. I'm at a bit of a loss.

HI Carol,

I would highly recommend you read Carol Bowman's first book Children's Past Lives. It will help you see the signs, learn how to respond to her and not lead her to memories. There are great cases within it. Chapter one of the book is free and can be read here on the forum HERE.

I would suggest start keeping a journal and write down everything that could be past life related. It's possible she is remembering past life trauma.

Hello Carol and welcome,

It is possible that the emergency surgery has triggered past life memories in your daughter. It may be tough now, but children generally grow out of their memories when they are around 6 or 7. It is good that you have taken her to your GP and the CAMHS, always best to make sure there is nothing else going on.

For now, keep a journal of anything she might say or things that might be past life related. If she gets upset, you could calmly and lovingly tell her that if anything bad happened to her in the past, that was then, but now she is with you in a new life and everything is safe. Another technique to try is, when you put her to bed and she is asleep, just tell her quietly that she is safe, she is in a safe new life with you as her mum and with her family who all love her, anything bad she is remembering is in the past and can't hurt her now. You may have to do this for a while, but other parents on the forum have tried this and it has often seemed to work.

Wishing you and your daughter all the best

I think that you are right, and that your daughter might have a past life issue. You have received some great advice above. All I can really add, is to just hang in there. (This is harder than it seems, I know, when your child is freaking out for no apparent reason.) I can tell you from a place of experience, it will get better.

If she were my child, to address fears of death, I would say something like: You do not have to worry about losing me as your mom for a long, long time. You have just started out. Enjoy being five, while you are still five. And then I would point out when her birthday is. That usually does it.

To discuss probing questions about the process of death, I have just been honest with my children, telling them that I am not really sure how they came to me, but that I am very glad they did. I also said, I do not think that there is anything in the world that you can do once, that you can not do a second time, so no matter what the future holds, we can always find each other. After all, they found me once before.

About the tasting food for her and possible poisoning, for now, I would humor her. Perhaps, get her involved making her own sandwiches, so she feels she has control over what she is eating. Let her watch when someone is preparing her food. Maybe talk about expiration dates and sealed jars so she is armored with some empowering knowledge. (But, then again, this could backfire. As an obviously caring mom, I am sure you will know when the time is right, if ever.)

Good luck! Let us know how you get on . . .

I agree that reading Carol Bowman's books will help you and perhaps having her help cook will comfort her. There are some great kids cookbooks out there that could really make it fun, too.

Although it could easily be past life related it could also be related to the trauma of her surgery. Maybe in her mind someone poisoned her and that is why she got sick. Kids hear much more than we think and sometimes they come to very different conclusions than we do.

I only offer the following for your consideration.. Sometime ago like your daughter I almost died from a massive heart attack. When I queried my doctors if I died or not, they said no, you do not actually die (whatever that means)

I will tell you how that effected me, because from what you said the same may have happened to your daughter.

It is now my belief that some who do come close to death and survive do in part cross over to their pure spiritual self when they are close to death. When they come back they are somewhat different, and they both feel and know it. I was old enough to understand but if this also happened to your daughter she would not understand. She may have some feelings and understandings you will never understand

If she asks you something and you don' t understand then tell her that, do not confuse her. From what you said its a shame at her age but she now understands she is mortal, that is part of what has happened to her. The poison thing may have nothing to do with poison at all. It may be she does not trust anyone after what happened to her and by getting you to taste her food first elements any fears she may have to eat it

Of course see is scared of chemicals and substances she doesn't like or thinks will harm her after her experiences in hospital As I said I only offer this for your consideration

All The Best
