Resistance to past life regression?

Daniel W

New Member
I've been trying to experience a past life regression off and on for several years. Currently, I am using the Brian Weiss CD.
When ever I use it, either nothing happens or I seem to
'click out' as soon as the CD says that you are entering the mirror. When that happens I find myself fully awake just as the CD ends.

Sometimes when I am listening to the CD, I experience an intense feeling of restlessness, and even though I am relaxed and 'under', I pull off the headphones.

I have an impression something is blocking my attempts to have a past life regression. I spoke with Bruce Goldberg about this, and he suggested that I come to his office for a regression. I am considering this, but I wanted to get some input from this group.

Should I continue and try to get past this 'block', or should I stop? Is something being hidden from me, and if so, should I accept that and move on to something else?

Thanks!

Hi Daniel.

Welcome to the forum. Seems you are having a few problems getting 'into the zone'? First a couple of questions before you start going to people's offices, etc.

What brings you to this point in life? What are you seeking? Is there something in particular you wish to explore with regard to reincarnation? If so, why? Do you have any particular feelings or emotions / experiences / de ja vus / etc. you wish to explore? Tell us about them and their circumstances so we may advise you best and also, so that this may help you to open the gateways somewhat to start with.

There are many ways of exploring past life experiences and CDs are only one. This is not a game, after all. This is life. This is serious. Perhaps there is a blockage of some sort. Some sleeping dogs are best left lying, at least for a time. Perhaps another approach might be better as a way in in the first instance?

I look forward to hearing your story in more detail.

Hi Daniel, welcome to the forum :)

It sounds like you could be putting too much pressure on yourself, or 'trying too hard', which often leads to failure. Maybe you should just try concentrating on relaxation exercises for a while, I know exactly what you mean by that intense feeling of restlessness, I used to suffer with 'fidgety' legs whenever I tried to relax, but you can easily overcome it.

I agree with tanguerra, if you wouldn't mind sharing a few more of the details that she suggested, then maybe we can advise you accordingly.

Have you thought about changing the cd that you use? Some people have better results with certain cd's than others, and not all of them are 'guided' regressions, there is a good list of cd's that you can use here. You might also find these threads useful too: Meditation and The Heart Center

You could try redirecting your mind towards something else. Maybe pick a subject you are interested in and see if through that visualisation you pick up on something. For the first few memories it is nice to remember something affirming about life so you don't get overwhelmed . It does not matter what you remember.. ie it does not have to be something that is frustrating your subconscious. To begin with getting comfortable with the process is what is important as it is a new frontier and it takes practice to become good at it.

Afterwards, you can tackle those feelings that seem overwhelming. After many years of regression work , I have found that when I am feeling restless and feeling like I do not want to remember is a time I need to push through it. When I pushed through it I would find I remembered something that did not seem such a big deal in perspective of the overwhelming feelings-- ie the feelings of fear did not hurt me in any way. Afterwards I would feel alot lighter and more healthy, so it was worth forcing myself to remember.

It can take time to work things out , so trust that once you are on a path of self discovery things will evolve properly and you will recieve the peace and insights you may be seeking.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

I suffer from hypochondria that causes anxiety, yet I have always been interested in medicine. I wanted to be a doctor, but I can't even bring myself to visit a doctor, let alone go to medical school. As a result, I took another career path. I found out that my father had the same problem, and his father was a 'chemist', as they called pharmacists in the olden days.

I seem to 'know' what causes some medical problems and I'm wondering if I would gain some insight from exploring past lives.

I am hoping to find out what causes the medical anxiety so I can overcome it.

I am seeing a psychiatrist who is from India, and she said that this may be productive.

Welcome Daniel W!

Are you lying down or sitting when using the CD? I would suggest that you try sitting in a chair and just listening to the CD and not trying to do anything like remembering a past life - rather, just let your mind wander and see what comes to you.

I've been lying down, which is probably why I fall asleep...

I had always thought that dreams had nothing to do with past lives, but now I see that they do. I have had some interesting and strongly emotional dreams that took place in locations very familiar to me, but I have never visited. Maybe these are dreams of past lives?

I can't lie down when I do it. It is a guarantee will fall sleep. Even sitting in a chair I will sometimes fall asleep. I guess it doesn't help that when I try its usually at night. :D

As someone with ADD and restless legs, I completely understand having a hard time relaxing. I think its not easy for most people, especially if it's new to them. It's definitely something you kind of have to train yourself for. I've been working on meditation/ relaxation/ self hypnosis techniques for a long time (long before I believed in past lives), and I still struggle. Some days I can get 'into the zone' right away, and other days there's just no way. I agree with Chris and stardis. Focus on relaxing rather than 'trying' to remember something.

Personally, I like Brian Weiss, but I don't use his CD anymore. I've just never had good results with it.

I think of the CDs as more of a tool that facilitate your ability to enter into a mental state where your brain wave patterns are conducive to vivid imaginative daydreaming. That may not be an accurate description or the correct terminology but the point is to enter into an altered state akin to dreaming. Your conscious mind doesn't want to give up its control and will fight your attempts to relax and daydream at will.

It takes practice to daydream imaginatively and out of the flood of thoughts and "visions" that come to you are some that strike a chord and really resonate with you. You can follow up on these, but it seems to me that the more you try the less successful you are - you need to let it happen. You can't be sure where the thoughts come from and you may be surprised that you would even think of these things (memories?) but it is important to just let it happen, at least until you can, with practice, direct the dreams.

I learned a little about this from a pretty smart guy at one of the Friend's of Jung meetings I used to attend. He was an author and had written quite a lot. At one meeting, I bought one of his books on meditation (he signed it "agape on the inner way") and it helped me to understand that you can tap into a creative source to use your active imagination with no influence from other sources. Whether you are using the imaginative power of the human mind or gaining access to the shared consciousness in the holomovement makes little difference since you are just wanting to learn to be open to other possibilities.

Very interesting Stardis! May I ask the name of the book on meditation?

The reason why I don't like Brian Weiss CDs (even though I like his books) is that they are too short for me and as soon as I start a regression the CD ends.
I feel the same way. Just when you start getting into it, he starts bringing you out of it. Also, the things he's saying might not have anything to do with what you are experiencing. Obviously a professional is going to have the personal touch that the CD doesn't, and they are going to be able to talk you through the difficulties. In the begining it would have been benificial to me to have someone there to help me talk about it, make sense of it, and come to terms with it. I enjoy it now but it was a rocky start.
The first time I did it I though I was making it up and didn't believe I was actually experiencing a pl.
Sometimes for me is like watching a movie and sometimes I am really there in the flesh.
All of this is true for me as well. It took some time for me to accept that what I was experiencing was real.
There is another factor that plays an important role. It is fear. Fear might be the reason why you are stuck.
Good point. Fear is a powerful deterrent that we can often be unaware of if what we are afraid of is not clear to us.

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to the forum. I personally find the regression CD's - that 'talk you through it' a distraction from the purpose of my mediation/exploration. It is a common thing to think you need guidance, but I believe everyone can do it even better without guidance of a talking - guidance CD. A Regressionist as an aid is a different matter.

Meditation is a great way to experience PL's. Going within and trusting yourself. Making contact with the first spark of life that was created by God, it is within each individual.

Something I was taught was that in order to experience other dimensions you have to be aware that there are thousands of additional senses. The senses that most people know of are touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight.

The higher senses are those of vibrations. These vibrations were key to experiencing beyond our time space paradigm -- most important is the realization that certain sounds are actually Light. Do you ever experience inner light in your meditations? Before sleep?

Dealing with vibration, sound and light is probably the best I can describe as tools used in order to experience altered states consciously. To listen very carefully and to surrender within as you meditate. It is also the act of surrender, of letting go that brings you into higher states of consciousness.

Some things to think about: Sound has been used by many cultures to enhance human vibration. It is brought through the body and all of the peripheral nerves and felt within every part of the being. This type of vibrational sound is not the same sound that we are most familiar with, such as the speaking voice. Vibrational sound sets off a value that is felt within the body. Peripheral nerves feel this vibration.

So... in a nut shell working intensively with internal sound, color and light -- are what raise the level of consciousness.

Use Tibetan bells, a very pleasurable sound and the ringing of these bells enables the balancing of the right and left hemisphere of the brain -- which in turn brings consciousness to the center.

The Heart Center thread mentioned above also might help you use these ideas. As far as sitting or laying down: I have to lay down, it enables me to go - real deep.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I agree that Dr Wiess' CD is too short. Last night I felt that I was on the verge of something when he said it was time to return.

I have an appt with my psychiatrist next week, and I'll ask her if she can recommend someone in my area for a regression session.

As I said before, I did mention the idea of past life regression to her, expecting some resistance, but she said it might be something to consider.

I actually tried taking a pl regression with Brian Weiss cd now, and the only thing I really got out of it was the awesome healing, warm feeling when visualizing the light going through my body lol:)

The past life bit in itself was short, and I'm not sure I got anything useful at all, and everything I saw made me associate with things that has happened in this life, things that I have forgot about. I vaguely saw myself with light brown, curly hair, a white dress and walking around in a street. Got the year 1863/1864. But the street I was walking in then reminded me of a place I know in this life, and then I remembered a deja vu feeling I got when walking by a building from the war (ww2), and then suddenly I remembered another event from this life where I was standing in the basement at my granmums place, I was 15 then, and I suddenly thought/felt that I had been forced away from my home during ww2 and ended up in a concentration camp, and some other thoughts. I got lots of similar things; suddenly remembered events in this life I have forgot about where I got "triggers" or deja vus to past lives.

I wonder why I got so much of that, I saw mostly stuff from this life, but can it be a way of confirming past lives memories, because maybe I wouldn't really trust it if I actually saw a past life? Or maybe it's just blocked..

The Wiess CD caused me to remember things from my childhood that I had forgotten about, but nothing about past lives.

Unless...

I remembered a time when I was very young when hearing or seeing things in slow motion seemed to trigger a fear reaction, and this may have something to do with a past life.

I also remembered when I was in a stroller and would hear people calling my name. I remember saying 'Hi' and my grandmother asking me who I was talking to.
