Since I can remember...

Hello again...

OK, here I go.

My earliest memories... (I didn't call them memories at that time) .. I was 13, or so. No more than that. With no apparent reason (I'm 37 now - there was no internet back then, information didn't come about quite as easily..) I developed a peculiar obsession for the British isles. I drove my mom crazy, kept asking if we could go and visit Scotland, for instance, or Ireland... And one day I woke up earlier than usual, right before sunrise.. and decided to write "a poem". It just came to me, the need to do it, the words I wanted to write.

It wasn't quite a poem, though. It was more like an essay - about my life with my welsh husband. Unfortunately I don't have those pages anymore, my notebook got lost somehow...

Memories flowed like the rain on the hills... A cottage, lonely and well kept. Small and lovely. The loveliest I've ever seen really. I woke up at the crack of dawn to get the house going for the day. There was a warm smell in my room, my husband lay there still sleeping.. oh, to this day the tears swell to my eyes when I recall that rush of words onto the paper, not knowing where it came from, but so, so real... I wrapped a woolen shawl around my shoulders and stood there for a while, looking at him, his hair auburn, glowing in the dim golden light. I touched his bare shoulder and by the life of me I can still feel his skin, the softness and the warmth.

I came downstairs then. I distinctly remember the bedroom being upstairs, and that the stairs where beside a wall, whitewashed I think, and at mid height there is a window, small with rugged edges and dark wood. Outside the world is still at rest, I remember thinking that all the animals are still quiet, it must be very early, and yet it isn't all dark, a pale golden light pouring over everything...

There are some brass artifacts somewhere, they reflect that beautiful light in a soft way...

The kitchen is at the back of the house. I have a big black coal stove there. On a wooden table by the wall there are several jars of marmalade, and they seem to glow, they catch the morning light in a way that makes me feel so, so at home. My home, where I am mistress. My realm.

I light the fire to get the water boiling and the coals smell nice. There's heather in the coal hole, I put it there because I like the smell so much.

I'm making some kind of coffee but it's not coffee, looks similar but doesn't smell the same. I don't know what it is...

My husband comes down. He's naked from the waist up, and I know he's not cold, although the weather is biting... he smiles at me, the smallest of smiles, and sits at the table, watching me go about my things. I feel so peaceful, so full of love.
Not a man of many words, he isn't.. his presence is so wonderfully complete, secure and warm....

At this point something "woke" me. I stopped writing, paused a while, and then... it was gone. Not the feeling, but that tidal flow of thoughts, memories, sounds, smells...

To this day I ache at those memories. Like you, Tinkerman, I miss my husband so much.

Yes W.A., I got the same feeling just reading your post. Truly a wonderful memory. I believe it was these quiet mornings where our environments were so perfect, and our mates so sensuous and alluring, that the magnitude of it broke through the barrier of forgetfulness- Lethe. It was, for me an incredible melding of spiritual and soulful with the physical world. Almost a marker, a speck, a quantified moment in time, where I was allowed to feel such incredible completion. I too remember the textures, the scent and a birth mark. I can go there instantly...and often do.

W.A. Have you found this person, from your memory, in this life?

Thank you again for sharing your memories, I look forward to reading more.

Tinkerman

Tinkerman... I knew you would understand.

yes, I have found that person. But I'll get to that later.

One wonderful thing I remember - the smell of his skin, of the rain on his face, and the wind. I can FEEL the rustling of his clothes!!

I realize you are a wise man, and your experience brings you a strenght and patience that I don't yet have. And beautiful as it is, right now it feels very cruel that I should be able to remember all this, and live with the longing.

Please read my next post.

Sorry, it's going to be a long one... :o

I grew up - I was a calm teenager, the kind that is no trouble. Excellent school grades, a small circle of friends, a good daughter and older sister. I had piano lessons then, and the music made me dreamy. I loved to read - at about twenty I had already read all the major classics of British literature. In English, of course.

I started translating at about that age - technical documents, the most part. And then I went to Ireland the first time, as an interpreter for a government office, to aid in a small conference on labour and women’s right’s to equality that took place in Dublin. I couldn’t believe my luck, I would finally visit Britain and still get paid for it!!!!

I loved it, of course. Much to the discomfort of my fellow workers, I took every chance I had to grab a map and walk about the city, dragging everyone behind me. Poor people, they were all twice my age and not nearly as energetic…

I went back several times after that, and love Ireland dearly till this day. But soon I realized it wasn’t the place I was “looking for”. Close, but not quite. Not so soft, harsher. Colder. And, strange enough, brighter. A place like Wales.

It dawned on me two or three years later. My writings about my welsh husband suddenly came alive in my memory again. And so I started researching welsh culture, history, music….. and this love of all things welsh stayed with me through those years, as I grew into a slightly wild and vaguely gothic girl. The world was mine, the future was so wide open, and everything was a possibility…

Later, in university, I met my husband. It was love at first sight, with pangs of recognition and glimpses of that feeling of having known this person “forever”. We still feel that way today, and love each other deeply.

But soon after we were married, the longing and homesickness that had been subdued returned. Discreetly at first, more and more present as the years passed. I turned it into anything constructive that made me feel “connected” to all those things so dear to me. Singing, gardening, cooking (!!!), and particularly making orange marmalade (I know it sounds funny…), reading, reading….

I had my first son - a wonderful boy, an amazing soul, that I always felt that I knew for so much longer than his years..

And then the universe began to conspire, and I got on a path I now know that I must walk, all the way.

I'm sorry, I know it's an awfully long post, but I'm trying to put my thoughts in sequencial order... I think I need to do it and I feel I'm in the right company. Please bear with me.

I promise not to be so overwhelmig as soon as I get all this off my chest....: angel

Thank you Tinkerman.

Thank you all.

You're not overwhelming at all, have you ever thought about writing a book? You write so well, and although I don't have much to add, I'm enjoying reading along - :)

I have actually stayed in a cottage in a remote part of Wales many years ago, and the way you have described everything, it fits perfectly, and it took me right back there, I could almost smell the wooden beams and the log fire again, and having to bend right down to look out of the window - :D

Thanks for sharing your past life memories, and for reminding me of some of my present life memories, I look forward to reading more.

Chris - :)

Thank you for sharing all this, Welsh at Heart, and you don't have to apologise for posting. :)

You write very well and by reading your posts it's easy to tell these memories are very vivid and alive to you. So you haven't visited Wales yet? Would it be difficult for you to go there for a cottage holiday? It could help you with the longing.

Does your husband know about this, and does he understand you?

Be well,

Karoliina

Hi WA,

Don't apologise for being too long. Your story is lovely and one that several of us here can easily relate to.

I have a similar thing going on with my friend X. Ever since I was a kid, even when I was married and thought I was happy enough, I knew something (someone) was missing. Eventually I found him and we have remained friends ever since, despite a few 'hiccups' along the way. I can't imagine him not being part of my life. Well, I can, but I don't like it!

Have courage and be full of hope and good cheer! In my experience, when you start getting powerful memories (longings) of this nature it is often a sign that someone important is about to pop into your life! Just keep your eyes open. :)

But, don't be alarmed. If you are happily married (or the other person may be!) this does not mean you have to begin a big romance, run away together and turn everything upside down! Not at all! I don't subscribe to the view that each of us has one (only one) person who is our 'soul mate' above all others, etc. etc. I certainly don't believe that we must have a romantic relationship with them in order to be 'fulfilled'. X and I have dated other people from time to time. It makes no difference to our friendship. Even if he ever really fell in love with someone else and wanted to get married and so on I would have only joy for him, although it would probably mean I wouldn't get to see him as often. We have all eternity, so I wouldn't care (in the nicest possible way) as long as he was happy.

If you meet this person again be prepared for the possibility that they won't remember or recognise you. Also, bear in mind, they might be male, female, old, young, a new baby, the guy who cuts the lawn ... All will no doubt be revealed in due course.

Do you have any other memories apart from the scene in the cottage? I wait with bated breath for the next installment.

Hi all!! :)

I'll continue to write my story later on - it's having a serious therapeutic effect, believe me  And since I started writing here, new little details have began to pop up... I'm on the right track, I guess.... :o

Chris... :) .... it feels good to have you around..!

thanks..! yes, I've long wanted to write a book, and a few ideas have been jumping about in my mind for years.. maybe the right time is coming...

I was so excited about your stay in Wales! Where was it, exactly? You know what, I'll try to sketch the cottage in my memories and attach it here... I just have to find the time to do it! :butbut:

Karoliina, hi! I haven't visited Wales yet - I'm hoping to, maybe sometime next year. I almost did, two years ago... but I'll get to that part later.

My husband... I think he understands how I feel, he's quite an open minded man (or I wouldn't have married him), but I'm afraid he has trouble (which I understand) dealing with the whole thing. It can get confusing, I guess, and it's not easy being self assured enough to be able to let go of the person you love and entirely trust them to come back.... The hardest part for me is not sharing everything with him, not for honesty's sake, but for the simple fact that I hate not sharing things with him - when I come across anything new in my life my first thought goes to him... He's not my soul mate, but he is indeed a kindred soul, and we must have been together many times before - though probably not as husband and wife.

Maybe in time this will be entirely possible. We'll see...

Curious girl, yes! My lives (or at least my present life and this particular PL in Wales) are incredibly intertwined.... I haven't had the chance for a reality check yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up feeling like you do about the way things were... :(

Tanguera.... I did read about X... I must say I admire your strenght and the sensible way you deal with it.... It takes patience and maturity, I think... I'm working on it.

In my case, I don't know what kind of relationship I could have with this person - I ran away before knowing what it could be. But I must say that it was a choice I had to make, the hardest ever, but looking back I think I did the right thing, the timing was all wrong... and my intuition did tell me that it would have been a "running away together" kind of thing...

Please read my next thread, ok? Now I think I'm ready to tell you what happened two years ago.. :o

Oh, and Chris? I have the weirdest feeling, I can't get Lisbet off my mind - but somehow I don't think it's related to that particular life of hers/yours...

Hi Welsh Heart,

The cottage I visited was just outside a small market town called Rhayader, which is right in the middle of Wales. Being very isolated and with no other houses around, it was so peaceful, and the view was very much like it appears in this picture (just ignore my car in the foreground - : angel:D)

Oh? please elaborate, you have me very intrigued now - :) You're welcome to PM me anytime.

Hi Chris.. how familiar this place seems - yes, my view from the window was something quite like that... and the funny thing is I looked at it yesterday and it looks different from what it looks today. I know it's the same pic,, but today it "feels" slightly different. Yesterday the ground looked a bit bare, as if sun crested.

Oh, I'm rambling I guess...

I'll PM you for sure!
