Slavery During or Before the Civil War

Interesting reading indeed. I think I heard or read a story about a black community in OK city having a riot back in the 40's and a lot of them were killed. It made the news because it was an aniversary date? The community wanted an apology or something from the city because of it.

There are a lot of laws here in the southern half of the country that have only recently been taken off the books. The civil rights movement cut out a lot of abuse but not the laws that allowed it until they find their way into the light of day. Quite often because the people who practiced them were/are still alive. Remember the comments from one very famous Mississippi senator a few years back? Showed his true colors and a lot of his fellow Mississippians. It may be a few more generations until it really disappears. Those attitudes aren't just found in Miss either.

Lighter note you might want to try the OK city historical society. There may be a black portion or member who can help you out.

Have you read the book Contested Territory, Whites, Native Americans and African Americans in Oklahoma 1865-1907 by Murray R. Wickett? It might be of interest to you.

Also, try this link: http://www.hevanet.com/kort/WALKER7.HTM In particular, note Langston, an all black colony. This was near to Oklahoma City I think.

THANK YOU Angelcat. Your post is very helpful. My interest in the book you listed will be two-fold. The life time prior to the life of slavery - was with the Indians. Specifically the relocation of the five tribes.

The links you provided gave me extended insight into the history of why - the African American's moved to Oklahoma. I do appreciate your efforts to help and am so glad I posted the question again. :):):)

I am looking for Clara Bea Hendrickson. (sp?) The slave owners daughter was Virginia Hendrickson. (sp?) I called her "Miss Ginnie" and the plantation was in Alabama.

There is a long story with this but I have to run this morning. If anyone could provide links to slave owners with the last name Hendrickson --(sp?) subject to slight spelling differences, I would appreciate it very much.

Hi Deborah,

There was a William Henderson with 72 slaves in Monroe Co, Alabama. Also, families with the name Hendrix or Hendricks in Lauderdale County, AL but they don't appear to have been slave owners. In addition, a number of families with the name Hendrick or Hendricks, who were slave owners, but not in Alabama.

A slave named Jim Hendricks bought his freedom in Lauderdale County, AL in 1848. He had previosuly been owned by one William Jackson.

A 6 year old slave named Clara was sold at auction in 1858 in Florence, AL following the death of owner, James H. Weakley.

I will continue to search for you.

I haven't had time to post my update but will share this. The Alabama Department of Archives and History states there were:

423 Hendersons in Alabama's armed forces!

130 Hendrix

ONLY ONE Hendrickson - It says he was Missing at Shelbyville; Rank: Corporal. My memories were clear - The massa's son served in the Civil War.

You have to do a new search to see the statistics - I cannot post the links to the names. They come up as an error. :(

The psychic said Hendrickson. If he is right -the chances of locating that families history will be a lot easier. ;) That is -if the spelling is correct for the name.
 
I dont mean to steal Deborahs thunder, but I had a past life dream. I remember dying. I was a black kid, late teens early 20's and I was on the underground railroad. I was running through these fields and woods, it was night time and I came to this house with a light above the door. I knocked a couple times and they asked me something and I replied I forget what was said. They then took me into this room and gave me some food. I was with a few other people but the family took me up to an attic or something the floor of the attic or whatever was covered in straw or hay and I laid down for a moment and then a bunch of white men broke down the door and started attacking everyone. I was about to die or I did die and then I woke up. I had this dream before I knew about the underground railroad or anything like that at all.

Thanks for sharing your memory although it does sound rather uncomfortable. Have you had any other memories of this life that you would like to share? Do you have an idea of which time period this life took place in?

I dont have any other memories of that life but I would like to explore it. I dont know the exact year but for some reason 1835 jumps out at me.
 
This may not be a past life memory - but a week ago I had a dream that included the hanging of two young black girls about age 9-10 years old. I woke up shocked and confused. Has anyone EVER heard of a hanging that was of two children in the late 1800's - worse yet young girls?


It might just be my unconscious mind dealing with how I died back then. If someone knows anything - please feel free to post it here. :)

I had some similar dream with children hanged, but as usual, it had just some very little to do with concrete events or places, however it was extremely interesting to me in a symbolic level.


It took place in war-torn surroundings near the place my mother was raised, when I found a crater-like natural object with a circular tunnel in the inside used as a fortress. That was the place where children were hanged, but when I found it with my companions, I felt rather emotionless as someone got used to the cruelty of everyday life.


When I awoke, I interpreted this dream, that I should be aware of the alienation of the people in my country (where there has not been war for decades), and to avoid this as much as possible. If we take all the details literally, it cannot be placed to an exact time frame, however if we accept the slight change of events by the unconscious, I might have experienced the situation in an other time and another culture, such as the one you are writing about.


Does it make sesne to you?
