Some Signs - How to React???

My son has clearly described an entire family he has in another State, occupations, siblings ages and clothing (down to the buttons), how he met me "originally", the yard of the home where he lived (including the types of flowers), etc... He began this shortly after he turned four as we were driving home from pre-school seemingly out of the blue. Almost a year later he continues to speak of "his family" and often. To the best of my knowledge, he has no knowledge of the State he describes as home - certainly not the names of the flowers that grow there!!!

I have never correlated a physical trait - only that he seems to have a great deal of detailed knowledge for someone so very young. Wow!

My question - how do you talk about these expreiences with your child? I usually allow him to speak freely about it, and don't disagree - other than trying to tell him that I am his mother now. He calls me Mom, but also refers to his other Mother, siblings and father often - My heart aches somtimes, he seems caught between there and here - or is it a mental issue?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and respond.

Hi momof2,

Welcome to the forum. :)

You may enjoy this thread http://www.reincarnationforum.com/threads/how-do-i-talk-with-my-child-about-a-past-life.2619/

I definitely recommend reading Carol Bowman's book Children's Past Lives as it is a wonderful resource for parents whose children are experiencing past life recall.

It sounds like you are doing a wonderful job with your son -- by just allowing him to express his thoughts and feelings. :) It's very important for children to feel that you are listening.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Momof2, in addition to the link Ailish has provided, I'd add one other suggestion. Keep a journal with all the details your son recalls. Usually children will stop remembering once they are around 7 years old, and a journal could help him later one in recalling his Past Life.

John

Welcome,

There are two more threads that you might find interesting.
A link to a web page for Ian Stevenson's research group, which gives advise for parents whose children remember. And another thread titled how children' experience time, which discusses the book Children of the new millennium written by P.M.H. Atwater.

Please keep us posted - and thank you for sharing.

Hi Momof2,

I could have written your post a year ago. My son told me a very similar story. He was five. Now he is nearly 6 and a half and I believe he is starting to forget. I think it is more typical that the children will start to remember at about 3 or so and then begin to forget as they near 7 but it is different for every child.

My son now tells me that he thinks he dreamed that family and the details about their life but there is no way he could have spoken in such detail, like your son.

I think the most important thing to remember is that you know your son. At 4, you know pretty much what he knows, what he has been exposed to, what words he uses to describe things. You would know if someone had taught him the name of a state or the names of flowers. You're probably pretty familiar with the cartoons he watches and these are typically not the subjects covered in cartoons a 4 year old might watch.

When my son told me that his past life mother died and he hadn't had a chance to say goodbye, he started to cry. He is not a sentimental child and it really caused me to take notice. That and the fact that most stories he told at that age digressed at some point into a dinosaur or a monster or bad guys coming on the scene and he is the guy who saves the day. This was different, his tone was different, the emotions were different. So I struggled because before the moment he started speaking to me about his family, I did not believe in reincarnation.

Some phrases that saved me in the early days (because I don't think well on my feet) where
Oh??? Then what happened?
How do you feel about that or how did that make you feel?
Tell me about that...
I just encouraged him to talk. Like you, I didn't disagree. Sometimes, I'd ask him where he heard such and such or where he learned something and sometimes he will give an answer that is not past life related. Sometimes, I get an earfull.

I agree with John that it really helps to write it down. Writing it down and re-reading it will also help you to be better able to follow the story. I also agree with buying Children's Past Lives. Carol Bowman also wrote a book called Return From Heaven. I think they are both good books, easy and fast to read. I'd start with Childrens PAst Lives though. It will definitely make you feel more normal. I worried about a mental problem too but children remembering their past lives is a lot more common than you previously thought. Think about how many people you've told about your son's memories. I'd bet very few. How many people are going to 'get this?"

Ailish suggested to me last year that I talk to my son and explain reincarnation to him. I told him that his past life family
had probably all gone to heaven or they lived somewhere far away and everyone, including him, had new lives now.
If you want to send me a private message, feel free.
You are in the right place to look into this. Trust your heart. You're a good mom or you wouldn't even be here on this forum. You would have dismissed him and his statements a long time ago but you are listening and he knew that you would.

Hello Momof2 and welcome! :)

Others have already given you some great advice and links to previous discussions. If you haven't done it already, I suggest you browse through this forum - especially this section with children's experiences - and you'll find out that you are definitely not alone with this. Many parents are puzzled with their children who are sharing past life knowledge.

It sounds like you have taken this very well and are being a great parent and support to your son!

If you want to, you can tell us more about your son's past life - I'm sure many of us are interested. But you don't have to, if you feel it's private. :)

All the best,

Karoliina

Thank you all so much!!!

I appreciate all of you and your advice. I definately feel that children are spiritual and have the full right to be heard. I would never dismiss his comments and stories.

He told me that his sister was injured while playing in a creek bed behind their home, down the slope behind the barn where his "dad" kept the horses. "Abbey" his sister (then) was wearing her special dress - you know? - the flannel one with the bunnies? It was a very special dress with beautiful buttons. My "mom" told her not to go there - especially in that dress.

It was a little unclear from his story - how his "sister" came into my care. He told me that his "mother" was very grateful to me for taking such good care of her daughter, and that this is how he came to know me then. When she was well, they took her back home to their home State, and he never saw me again until now.

Isn't that interesting? I find him fascinating. I will continue to check on the links and other threads posted here. Thanks again for all of your help and consideration.:)

Does he know about slopes, barns, horses or creeks in this life? Flannel dresses?
I'm stretching my brain but can't think of any other way he could know about these things.
Good luck in your quest. Let us know if he says anything else.

Vicky

That's a wonderful story, momof2 :D

Perhaps you were some sort of doctor or nurse in that lifetime -- who helped to make Abbey well again. It would be so interesting to be able to find out more -- and if there is a connection.

Did you happen to ask him where they took Abbey? Maybe ask him to draw it with you -- and then have him explain his drawing to you.

{Sorry -- had to come back to edit -- the fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate the building in the middle of my post!} Anyway...

Sarah, a good friend of mine, has a 5 year old daughter who always says "When I was the Grandma and you were a boy..." Sarah's had her draw pictures, which both of them find enjoyable -- and they are full of bits of information. ;)

Please keep us posted,

Ailish

Drawing is a wonderful idea. I think I will try this the next time he talks about it. He is very expressive with his art. I can't believe I never thought of asking him if he'd like to draw any pictures.

I did ask him (when he told me about Abbey) if he knew where they took Abbey to and he answers only: to you. (Meaning me).

I've tried to be very careful about asking pointed questions - and glad I have after reading your posts. He is a very bright kid who remembers everything if he hears it only once so slopes, barns, etc... I can understand him having some knowledge of. What I couldn't understand is how he knew that the flowers in his yard were bluebells or that the dress his sister wore was flannel. This seemed extremely specific to me. His tellings are different than his ordinary "make-believe" play and story telling.

This is what led me here. He is compelling to say the least.

I'll keep in touch here. Thank you all sooo much.

Welcome momof2, it sounds as if your son is remembering a past life. There are so many helpful, nice people here who have gone through, or going through, the things you are just beginning to hear. I was shocked when my grandson started telling me events from a former PL. Now it is as natural for him to speak of his "other family" as it is to talk about this family. I think some events of his former life affect his behavior at times in this life. My grandson is also a very bright boy. He was talking in three word sentences at age 14 months. I believe children who remember PL's retain some of the skills and knowledge from a PL giving them a developmental edge over other children their age.

Vicky, I know what you mean about intermingling fantasy with PL memories. I have heard about purple skin and green hair and how he too saved the day. I read a link posted by one of the members somewhere on the forum about this and I am sure momof2 would find this a helpful read. Again, welcome momof2.

Kitn:

WOW! It's as if you are describing my son. I have often wondered about the ability to carry knowledge from before. Especially after having the privelege of raising our son. Thanks for sharing - made me feel like I'm not just "out there" in my thought process. You could just as well have been speaking on my behalf. Thank you for this.
