Something strange happened

Yesterday I took my 14 month old daughter Leah to her cousin's 5th birthday party. I was sitting in the livingroom with my sister chatting while all the kids played around us...

My nephew had gotten new toys and one of them was a small train set that had plastic railway tracks with it. One of the railway track peices was on the coffee table and my daughter came over, picked it up and said clear as a bell "railro". My sister and I laughed and said "Awww.. that was cute it sounded like railroad!"

Well about 10 minutes later she comes over, picks it up again and says it AGAIN. "Railro"

My sister and I just looked at each other like "Wow!" And I said "Do you think she's REALLY saying it??"

Here's the thing, I have never said railroad to her. We do have train tracks by our house and occasionally while out for walks we have seen trains, I ALWAYS say Choo choo train to her.

She's a pretty good talker for her age (she can say around 15-20 words) but obviously only words she knows...but she's not good with r's yet....

Do you think she knew this word? Or maybe I'm overreacting!? I feel like there's no way she could have known...

I thought I'd share anyways, maybe someone else has had something similar happen??

Edited to add: maybe i've put this in the wrong section, I guess it's not really a memory, just a strange event!:confused:
 
Hi Terelda - I don't know if this is PL or not - "railroad" is a pretty common word and it's possible she may have heard it before. Kids that age can really pick up on words pretty fast.

But keep an eye on her and see if she says or does anything that seems unusual in regards to railroads - she's at a good age to start acting out past-life behaviors if any should happen to surface.

Please keep us posted if you find out anything more.

Oh, and by the way, since you wondered if her behavior was related to a past life, it would seem to me that you put your story in the right section.

trelda, of course you would be curious to find out if this is a past life connection, being that she specifically said the word, and it stuck out to you. give it time, I am sure if she remembers anything you will know about it. keep the communication open, your mind and heart open to her.
 
Thanks for the replies. I am a stay at home mom to her so I do know her abilities quite well. I am not ruling out her having heard the word before but it was really more the fact that she's not good with r's that made it stand out even more. She did see a steam engine train go by once with us (it was doing a special tour across Canada...) anyway, she was extremely excited and was trying to imitate my choo choos. So cute! LOL

I will watch for more signs especially relating to trains. I will be very open to any of her comments as I myself had memories of my PL as a child. :)

Did she pronounce the "railro" r differently than other r's ?
Does she say cat when she sees a cat,
or ball when she sees a ball?
Or only when she's absolutely fascinated by something?

To answer your question curious girl, most children "explode" with words somewhere around 18 months (so she's close) that is when they can put together simple 2 word phrases (such as what's that?) Of course there are huge variances with children as they're all so unique...some kids don't mutter a word until after their 2nd birthdays and they end up fine.

Leah doesn't know r words yet. She has babbled the consonant (as in rarara type stuff...) She does well with c, d, m, g and her vowels...most words she knows are things she sees everyday (kitty cat, doggy, cup, book etc....) and even those aren't very well understood by anyone but me.LOL :)

But if she doesn't say r-words yet
how could've she said railro...
And everyone was suprised to hear her say that.
It could be a sign that she was familiar with railroads
before she was born.
Let her play and babble and keep a journal,
who knows what else you might discover :)

Does your child watch educational tv?

If Canadian TV is anything like American, Barney will have introduced her to railroad .... it is amazing what children will pick up from TV, my oldest sang the alphabet song ... Barney version. And, if you ask people in their 20s to 40s how they started counting ... most would say it exactly as on Sesame Street.

That said .... please keep your ears open. I missed all the clues my child gave me when she was little .... and it is a bummer what I might have missed ...
