So, this is something that i've kind of thought about all my life, because most people don't really like the taste of tonic water.
My mom is an unabashed alcoholic, and would start her weekend days with gin and tonics, vodka and orange juices or bloody marys, which extended through the evening hours. When i was in my 12 - 18 range, she was very free about encouraging me to have a taste of her drink. i didn't actually do this very often because most of it tasted horrid to me.
But i developed a definite taste for tonic. i can, and do, drink it straight, and really like the bitter taste. I haven't met anyone else that feels the same way.
Now, i've also always been a mosquito MAGNET. Seriously...a room of 75 people - i will be the ONE PERSON to get bitten. Mosquitos flock to me like i must have the most tasty blood on the planet. i was born in Hawaii, and when i was a year old, my mom took me to the doctor because both eyes were swollen shut and she didn't know why. Mosquitos.
I also lived in Western NY for about 10 years as an adult and would get horrendously bitten up in the summer (to the point of people noticing all the bites and redness on my legs). These are both very tropical climates (sub tropical for Westerny NY, but still very mosquito-ish in summer). I grew up in Southern California and live in Northern California now - mosquitos are less of a problem here but i do need to be careful in the summer.
Since quinine was a major treatment for malaria, i'm just wondering if this might be a possible past life/death for me. Mind you, i have no specific memories, but the correlation seems to be overtly strong. I need to be clear that i really don't drink tonic all that often, but i thoroughly enjoy the taste when i do, and seem to go on 2/3 day mini-binges when i actually get a taste for it (often many months apart, but still).
Thoughts?
