Triggered Recall

Watching the video "The Ghost Inside My Child" sparked recall when one of the Mother's spoke about her child referencing another Mother from before. I have read about this online and heard professionals speak about this, but - I have never seen an actual Mother speak about it with an emotional response. That is what triggered recall of my relationship with my own Mom. I forgot about my 'childhood' when I turned 18, but my Mom would never let me forget "the hardship it was to get you to address me properly by calling me Mom." I swear I never heard the end of it - even as an adult. The 'hurt feelings' stayed with her long after I had forgotten about it. When I posted on the other thread - I wrote about not wanting to 'disrespect' the memories of a 'former Mom' in another life. I went through stages and phases as a child. That was just one stage of it. Another stage was the fact that I could recall spending a 'past life' with my Mom - when we didn't have a Mother/Son relationship. I tried to speak to her about it - and as a child - I was totally amazed that she had forgotten about 'that time before.' I thought it was one of those 'adult' themes that grown-ups didn't talk to children about because I can recall saying to her many times - "how in the world can you forget something like that?"

Of course, now (as an adult) many of those 'memories' are now buried in my own mind and separated by a fog in the unconscious realm of mind.

As a child, my Mom wouldn't acknowledge the 'former body' her spirit once walked with - so - I came up with another approach. I was standing with her in the backyard prior to grade school so - I was about 5 years old at the time. She was hanging out clothes on a clothes line to dry. In my childish way I was trying to avoid the type of conversation that would have her throwing her hands in the air and telling me to stop talking about it. So - I asked her,

"What about that time I came to see you when you was you and I wasn't in your belly yet? When I was like a fly - flying around."

I was referencing a time when she was just a young girl around 14 years of age. I described her and described the clothes she was wearing. I went on to describe the place I saw her.

"You were crying that day because you had been hurt. You hid in that place for a long time and cried thinking you was alone because you couldn't see me. I was with you the whole time trying to let you know how much I loved you."

This got my Mom's attention. She could recall that day and the incident that caused her so much pain. She asked how it was that she couldn't see me. It was an old building like a shed with gaps between the boards and knot holes in the planks. From my childhood perspective - I was constantly 'flying' through the gaps and holes in an 'orb' of light. I then told her,

"I think you must have heard me some how because you said........."

When I told my Mom what I could recall her saying that day when she was only 14 years old - she stopped and froze looking off into space for awhile. She shook her head and then asked,

"How do you do that Son? You almost got me to thinking you was actually there with your Momma, but that is impossible. You wasn't even thought of yet, much less born yet. I must have said something to you about it when you was a baby and your recalling what I said to you. Now - it is like a memory to you. That is the only explanation for it."

I have many memories where my parents looked for a rational and logical explanation for 'reincarnation' and other spiritual themes. I feel that many of the times I refused to call my Mother 'Mom' had to do with memories of past life memories I had of her from another life time.

Thank you for this. I was amazed when James Leninger told his parents he first saw them when they were on their honeymoon. That's when he chose them to be his parents. So now we know this is more common than anyone thought.

I can recall my Mom's argument, "You don't get to choose your parents Son. Everyone knows that as a fact. How your going to twist known facts around to suit yourself?"

At the age of 17, my Mom confessed she had played 'devils' advocate with me during childhood knowing the opposition I had ahead of me in my life if I stuck to the 'reincarnation' theme (as well as other spiritual themes.)

There was a time when I was a child when I referenced that 'visit' in the old building when it came to prior knowledge about the choice to be with her in this lifetime - but, I think it is misleading to think the 'choice' was made during that visit. I feel there was a decision process in spirit that went far beyond that occasion. I don't get the impression that I was 'scouting' around for a future Mom when I happened upon her. My 'visit' with her that day was something I (as a spirit) had been looking forward to with anticipation. I used the word 'homework' at one point in childhood when I spoke to my Mom about it. Studying on the matter before crossing over into this world.

There was another time when I was about 4 years old when I was trying to speak to my Mom about a 'former life' and an 'invisible spirit' popped out of thin air and put his finger to his lips and silenced me. I called is 'shushing me' back then. At that age - I was shocked that my Mom was standing right next to me and didn't see or hear this 'spirit' as I had. That changed the subject. I have memories now of many instances where a 'spirit' would show itself and silence me from talking about 'former lives.' Some topics were 'off-limits.' I was familiar with this particular spirit. He was coming to me in dreams as a child and I later referred to him as my personal teacher. A majority of our conversations (in spirit) were NOT in English so it was hard for me to keep an understanding of the 'what and why's' concerning our conversations about reincarnation. What I can recall of that incident at the age of 4 was - that my Mom was not in a frame of mind to help me navigate toward the future. (The particular memory I was trying to speak about at the age of four was very graphical with elements of 'death and dying.') I can recall the 'spirit' telling me it would hurt matters in the future to speak to much about it in that moment. I did eventually speak about it and in later years (after I turned 18) my Mom brought it up again trying to probe me for answers. As a child, I had a memory of my Dad (in a past life) killing the person I once was in a different body. I don't have a conscious memory of when I spoke about that to them as a child, but I can recall the many times as an adult when it was brought up by my Mom. "Where in the world your got the notions and ideas put in your head as a child. The time you spoke about your Daddy killing you by chopping your head off. We had a time of it - trying to get you to stop talking about that like it was a fact. You were absolutely convinced of it. What your Daddy did to you as a child to deserve that - I would like to know."

My parents tried to talk to me about reincarnation after I turned 18. They felt that as an adult I would be able to relate to their logical and rational minds better. Due to a medical condition I developed a form of amnesia and didn't have conscious access to the memories of childhood. So, my parents were left in the dark wondering about it for many years.

The 'decisions' that led to them being Husband and Wife in this lifetime - and for me to be their 'son' was made long before my spirit encountered my Mom crying in the building at the age of 14. This was one of the many perplexing puzzles I pondered out loud with my parents. As a child, it amazed me that they had no memories of our prior relationships - in the flesh as well as in the spirit - where all these 'secret' choices were made that led us to cross paths as we did in the human world. To me, (as a child) it was no accident or coincidence that we were together as a family. I felt it had all been planned out in spirit prior to the actual events unfolding as a child. I was depending on my parents to give me the answers and they were totally in the dark when it came to reincarnation which was very hard for me to understand as a child knowing as I knew about the matter.

The fact that you were able to see "spirits" indicates that you were a "psychic kid". It's not uncommon for psychic kids to see spirits and also remember past lives. What other psychic abilities did you have? Do you have any now? You can send me a PM if you don't want to get OT here.

It's so interesting to hear other people say they picked their parents. My daughter has told me that she picked me to be her mom when I was a teenager. She has said that she would "watch" me. She doesn't remember what I was doing while she was watching me, only that I was a teen. She must have watched me for a while because I was 29 when I had her.

When I was a kid - my family used the word 'mystic.' When I was 20 (1980) some friends used the word 'psychic' and I had no idea what they meant by it. (I was not familiar with the word.)

  • The word psychic is derived from the Greek word psychikos ("of the mind" or "mental") and refers in part to the human mind or psyche (ex. "psychic turmoil"). The Greek word also means "soul".
  • The soul, in many mythological, religious, philosophical, and psychological traditions, is the incorporeal and, in many conceptions, immortal essence of a person, living thing, or object.

I never liked the word 'psychic' because too many people implied it was a 'mental' or 'biological' process instead of a spiritual process - especially when it came to having sight of spirits. (This ability stayed with me up to the age of 23.) I grew tired of people accusing me of having a vivid imagination or suffering from some sort of psychosis when I spoke about 'sight and sound' of actual spirits. (From 1978 to 1983 it was mostly spirits of deceased people I had known prior to their passings.) I looked up a list on Wikipedia of what some consider 'psychic abilities' and checked off the ones I have stories about from the age of 1 to the age of 23. This was the period in my life when this sort of thing was at it's peak. (Most of it was prior to the age of 18.)

I have stories about the following events happening in my life at various stages.

  • Aura reading
  • Automatic writing
  • Astral projection (An out-of-body experience)
  • Bilocation or multilocation
  • Clairvoyance, second sight
  • Death-warning - A vision of a living person prior to his or her death.
  • Mediumship - Communicating with spirits.
  • Precognition, premonition and precognitive dreams - Perception of events before they happen.
  • Psychokinesis or telekinesis - Manipulation of matter or energy by the power of the mind.
  • Psychometry or psychoscopy - Obtaining information about a person or object.
  • Remote viewing - Gathering of information at a distance.
  • Telepathy

When I was a child - my parents would tell me to 'stop' doing 'this, that or the other.' I told them, "I don't control it as much as it controls me.' I felt I had little to no control over when, where or how it would happen. I felt like my spirit was sitting in the backseat of a car while I sit at the controls most of the time. From time to time, my spirit would jump out of the back seat and take control and I would find myself sitting in the backseat 'observing' the event as it went on. It wasn't until the age of 12 that I could tell the difference between a person with 'skin' and one 'without.' It was hard for me to tell the difference in my own mind. I can recall my Mom telling me,

"If they don't have skin - I don't want to hear about them. Keep them to yourself and let them run free in your imagination."

When my Mom walked into a living room and saw all the furniture on the ceiling and started screaming like a mad woman running out of the house to the neighbors - I never took credit for it. She blamed it on 'poltergeists' and my family moved to a new house. I was only 5 at the time and I learned to avoid doing that type of experimentation around others. (I forgot how to do it after starting grade school.) Many of these things freaked people out. (The spirits I walked with at that age - scolded me because I was causing 'fear' in others.)

One time - I wanted to write an Aunt a letter. I could 'astral travel' and my parents were aware of this from the past. I asked if I could get a letter to my Aunt. (I tricked my Mom into given me permission.) I 'astral traveled' to her house 100 miles away. My aunt came home to find the letter on the kitchen table. She called up my Mom and asked how I had left a signed letter on her table that day. I told my Mom, "I jumped out of my skin. How else did you think I was going to get a letter to her today?" My Mom told my Aunt she was curious how she was going to take it and see if she could figure out how I did it. My Aunt was upset because I had access to her house without permission. She told me, "Next time you come to visit without your skin - leave the letter at the front door." I had done this with my Grandparents as well. I quickly learned that this sort of 'skill' or 'ability' freaked people out - especially when they couldn't come up with a logical or rational explanation. I lived in the day when superstition would speculate about 'magic' and 'evil spirits' causing it.

I grew up with one foot planted in the physical realm - and the other in the spiritual realm and would switch back and forth freely.

As a young adult I grew tired of it and didn't like causing a scene around friends. Mostly because of the superstition and fear it would provoke in the minds of others when 'odd' things occurred around me like that. I came up with a 'set of rules' when I was 23 and in order for my 'spirit' to take control like that again - it has to be under very strict conditions before I allow it to happen. It is a very, very rare occurrence since 1983. For the most part - I don't allow it to happen any more. I have had my fill of that sort of excitement through the first 23 years of my life. Now, I just like to write about it. If people 'dis-believe' - I don't care. At least they will not run off screaming their heads off about it accusing me of being in 'league with the devil.'

You were born about 30 or 40 years too soon. Yes, the term "psychic" has recently become more "acceptable", mainly because of the TV shows, movies, etc. Did you ever hear of a TV series called "One Step Beyond"? It was a black and white show from the 1950's. Because it was about the paranormal it was ahead of it's time. Back then I watched "Twilight Zone" but have recently discovered the OSB episodes on YouTube. TZ was science fiction, whereas OSB was supposed to be based on true stories. There is a moderated yahoo group you might check out sometime. Called Psykids. It was setup for parents but there are also many adults there.

Thanks for recommending this series. It sounds like the original "Unsolved Mysteries." After I started talking about 'past lives' at the age of 3 that involved graphical descriptions of 'death' and 'dying' my parents closely monitored what I watched on TV. Like many other parents dealing with this from a young child, my parents were scratching their head trying to figure out what was 'putting such' ideas in my head. I was only allowed to watch certain 'non-violent' cartoons. (Tom and Jerry was too violent according to my Mom. Casper was eventually put on the blacklist because it was dealing with the paranormal.)

I read that this series went into syndication shortly after being canceled in 1961 and my parent always referenced certain programs that touch on the themes I brought up - so - maybe this was the 'infamous' program they were always referencing. My parents were constantly asking me if I was getting up and watching TV from the hallway with them catching me. I can recall my Mom talking about 'that show.' Maybe this was the show my parents were constantly referencing during that young stage.

Reincarnation was brought up again at the age of nine because I watched an afternoon movie on TV called "I've Lived Before." I don't know how I slipped under my Mom's radar on that one because the subject was about 'reincarnation' and I felt validated about all my past references to the theme. After that, I was never allowed to watch any TV alone or without prior approval from my Mom until I turned 17. The only programs I could watch were 'comedy' hours and variety shows. When I turned 17 - I got cable (with the new HBO channel) hooked up and watched every R-rated movie I could without having to get permission from my Mom.

With me, there was very little media exposure to the theme when I was a child. In some recent interviews I have heard people use this as an excuse for 'dis-belief' - that a child was exposed to the theme through the media - and picked up on it and expanded it with a childish imagination. I have read about skeptics claiming it is some sort of way of 'seeking attention' - which makes me cringe when I hear that. I am so grateful for the Internet and a way for parents to research these types of cases involving other testimony of young children who go through this process and to take it seriously.

My opinion on children being 'psychic' is - I think a majority of young children have a natural ability within them for 'psychic' abilities - but - it gets oppressed as we grow older due to pressure from society to conform to standards -- for better or for worse. I am sort of on the fence undecided (at my age) whether it is good or bad to oppress it. There is a saying that has stuck with me through the years. Something about, "In order to know the light - you must first comprehend the darkness." Maybe the 'absence' of the 'supernatural nature' of our inner soul and spirit 'goes' through a 'dark tunnel' to appreciate it more. Something like, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe we need that 'absence' from the "Divine" to appreciate it more - when knowledge of it - returns to us.

Thanks again for the recommendation. I going to have to watch some of the episodes. There is one on Hulu titled "The Riddle" Season 1 Eposide 22: An irrational hatred in an American tourist on the Bombay-Calcutta Mail Railroad train is considered in terms of metempsychosis -- the transmigration of souls.

I found another episode titled "Nightmare" about lost love found through 'reincarnation.' It aired on June 27, 1961. It is odd to know that there were two programs that aired on primetime ABC back in 59 and 60 that had a plot about reincarnation.

I remember picking my mom. She was visiting Canterbury Cathedral that day, and had her picture taken in one of the hallways. I saw her there from above, noticed her hat. Many years later I saw that picture & told her I still remembered. What was fascinating is she told me she prayed that day for a child in the Cathedral, shortly after she was pregnant. I can still remember it clearly to this day. I think everyone has choice in picking parents.

I'm beginning to believe this is more common than anyone thought. When your kids throw a temper tantrum you can remind them that they chose you to be their parents.
