What were you before you were a boy?

The story in my family goes...I asked my dad what he was before he was a little boy. I was around 2-3. He answered "an apple". So I asked again, this time he told me a long story about being a grasshopper.

I often wonder what conversation would have ensued had I had parents who had the presence of mind to take me serious.

Very few people remember past lives, especially as adults, so there really wasn't much he could tell you.


When I was a tot I remember asking my mother where I came from? She giggled and said 'the hospital'. Sigh. That wasn't what I meant, but had no way of explaining that I wasn't that interested in where my physical body came from - could have grown underneath a cabbage leaf, for all I cared - I was curious about ME - my consciousness.

I find it particularly interesting when kids/people remember being a being other than human.. reminders we don't only stay human!

I wish more parents would be serious when answering their children as they often don't realize that when they joke with them or "pull their leg" that often the child takes it seriously and doesn't realize it is untrue until many years later when they are older and can understand. I wish parents in the west believed in reincarnation so they could help their children better when they talk about past lives and know appropriate responses.

What do you think would happen if you asked a class of kindergarten or Pre-K "Do you remember before you were born?" or "Do you remember when you were big before?"
