"when I was your age..."

Here are some notes on things my 4 year old son, Augie, has been saying over the past couple of years......

When Augie was 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old, his dad was changing his diaper, and Augie said very simply, "when I was your age, I used to change YOUR diaper." This is the first time he said was something unusual. When my son was born in Dec, 1995, he was named for my husband's father, Grandpa Augie, who died June, 1994. He mentioned several times over the following months that he used to do things "when I was your age" or "when I was big".

Now and then, when Augie (we call him "Gus" also) meets someone for the first time, he often says, "Hi! I'm Gus. I used to be Grandpa Augie." I think he is selective about who he says this to, but I can't be sure.

Recently I asked, "when you were Grandpa Augie, did you own a store?" I thought he would perhaps describe the business Grandpa owned when he died, but his answer was, "Yep! I owned a grocery store." His grandpa had in fact owned a grocery store many, many years before.

Augie was sitting in the backseat of the car playing with a new toy which had a propeller on it, and he said very excitedly, "Hey! When I was Grandpa Augie, I used to invent things! I invented propeller shoes!" My husband confirmed that, yes, his dad had indeed invented something with propellers, but it was a backpack type of thing made to look like a jet pack. Augie answered back, "well, I made the shoes in the garage when you weren't looking." Grandpa Augie was forever tinkering in his garage--his favorite place to invent things.

At a restaurant last week, Augie whispered to me..."ya know mom, I have an imaginary friend." Me: "you do? what's your imaginary friend's name?" Augie: "uh...his name is Augie, like my name!" Me: "Oh...how old is Augie?" Augie: "He's like a man." Me: "oh, what color is his hair?" Augie: "white." Me: "Where is he?" Augie: (points at the empty chair across from us) "He's right there!" Me: "what's he doing here?" Augie: (he leans in and whispers in my ear) "He's having dinner with us!" Later, Augie mentions that his imaginary friend had to go home, because "I'M Grandpa Augie, y'know".

My husband was getting breakfast for Augie one morning, and Augie insisted that he mix two kinds of cereal together. His Grandpa always ate his cereal that way.

Me: "Did you have any brothers and sisters when you were Grandpa Augie?" Augie: "yeeesss...(laughing) my sister turned into a fish!" Me: "How did that happen?? Who turned her into a fish?" Augie: "Some bad guys. She died." (Note: Grandpa did have a sister, who was murdered, and her body was dumped into the San Francisco Bay and never found. Grandpa could not eat fish for a long time because of that awful tragedy). Augie: (he says this like it's the coolest thing ever) "when we die, God lets us come back again! I used to be big, and now I'm a kid again!!"

Whenever I ask Augie something about Grandpa Augie, little Augie always replies very insistently, "Moooom, I'M Grandpa Augie!"

I believe that my father-in-law has returned in the form of my son, and I believe he has a very specific reason for choosing to do so. When my husband was growing up (and all through his adult life), his father worked so hard that he didn't have time to "love" his son. Now, every morning, little Augie gets up insists, first thing, that he has "snuggle time" with his dad. It is a very important and special time they share every morning.

I have been meaning to do a search on children and past lives, and I believe tonight I've hit the jackpot, so to speak! I do plan to purchase the book in the near future. I continue to be amazed by my son, and it's so very interesting to read others' stories, too. Thanks for this forum!

Cathy,
I would like to talk to you about Augie. I'm am currently finishing a book on reincarnation in the same family--precisely what you're experiencing with your son.
Please email me at cbowman@childpastlives.org
Thanks.

Cathy,
Thank you for posting such a fascinating experience (or rather, series of experiences). I am intrigued and puzzled by the episode where Augie spoke of his invisible friend -- who sounds like an image of himself as Grandpa Augie. This keys into my wondering whether, when we reincarnate, we somehow divide ourselves, leaving one part to carry on the old "persona" ... It's all very thought-provoking. What was your take on that particular situation?

Hello, Elisabeth--

Augie's comments about his "imaginary friend" came out of the blue, and he had not mentioned an imaginary friend before. He told me that his imaginary friend plays with him a lot, and "only listens to me". Today, I asked him if his imaginary friend is Grandpa Augie, and he said, "No he's not--I'm Grandpa Augie only!" He seems to get things confused and silly when he starts talking about his imaginary friend. I asked him what his imaginary friend's name is, and he says, "It's Augie". Your idea that we might somehow divide when we are reincarnated is interesting. My feeling is that Augie wanted me to know about this image he was seeing in his imaginary friend. I don't know what to say beyond that. Thanks so much for your reply and comments!

Hi Cathy,

Do you have photographs of your father-in-law? If you do, take a photo of him, and a photo of your son (which have them both looking in a similar direction or angle), and compare their eyes. If your son was "Grandpa Augie," their eyes will be the same. (Not necessarily the same color, but will have the same *look* to them, because our eyes never change.)
It sounds as if your son is in tune with one of his guides. When I was very young, I used to have complete conversations on my own. I assumed *someone* was listening, even tho I had no specifics. Also, I teach, and I've had students mention "imaginary friends" before. However my assumption is, they aren't "imaginary."

Dear DJ:
I was surprise by your saying that the look of somebody´s eyes does not change through his lifetimes. How do you support that aseveration? Do you think the eyes are the mirror of the soul? I believe the eyes´ are a physical trait like any other.
A big hug.

The eyes themselves are a physical trait, but sometimes, when you look into a person's eyes, you see deeper, like looking into a mirror or a window.

There is no such thing as too many books. Too few bookcases can become a problem, however.

I found reading about Augies imaginary friend interesting. I believe this shows another example of an alternative to reincarnation for past life memories. This is, in my opinion, spirit possesion by the boy's deceased grandfather. Even Doctor Stevensen mentions this as a plausible explanation for past life memories.
I would like to belive in reincarnation as I did in the past, however the more I research the subject the less convinced I am.
Please comment on this; I am open minded and would love to believe again. Rick.

Find a movie called "Harvey" starring Jimmy Stewart. It's a delightful and insightful(a sometimes rare thing in Hollywood) tale that will enchant.
That being said it seems we all (souls), in regard to his other "Augie" nature, seem to generate energies.
Children pick up on these energies sometimes to a very high degree and like an orchestra that has the full score before them play the whole piece , these energies spoken of are mostly placed in the astral realm and the child "plays" the score he or she recognizes.
So in your case it seems to be a "pure" kind of recognition of the highest kind.
And I agree that the Soul of the loved one is no longer there in truth but his Love seems to be living on in the shape that you describe. The highest Love the purest Energy.
I loved an uncle extremely much and only remember meeting him faced to face when he was in his coffin , i was only 5.Had no "earthly" experiences with him directly or personally in this life.

This sounds like reincarnation in the same family to me, not spirit possession or spirit contact. If it were possession, I think he would be speaking as an adult and there would be marked differences, like swings between two different people, one a child and one an adult. On the other hand, he is speaking first-person. Also the memories are very specific and the references are obscure. It sounds like a child interpreting adult memories, exactly as you'd expect.

As for the imaginary friend, my guess is, it's one of Grandpa Augie's friends in the spirit world hanging out with him. But it could be anything. Remember, this is a child interpreting and having fun with the experience and getting all that attention. But at the core of a child enjoying the attention and the whole trip, must be these genuine memories of the previous life, or else the memories wouldn't be so specific and accurate.

Incidentally, having read many examples, I do believe not all past-life memory is due to reincarnation. Some is psychic perception, and some is spirit influence. But the differences seem pretty clear to me. In possession the switch between personalities is very pronounced--in psychic perception (i.e., of someone else's life), I don't believe you don't that strong first-person identification you have with your own past-life memories. Neither of these alternative sources for past-life memories seem to conflict with or seriously challenge reincarnation to me. By themselves they aren't nearly enough to explain the data.

Its me again. I am loving this site! I have a story to share as well. I am making breakfast and my three year old says, "Mom remember when I was big and your were little and I used to cook for you?" So I said, "You used to cook for me?" And he says, "Oh yes mommy you were my baby and I loved you very much and I was a big man" So I asked what it was he used to cook me. And he just giggled and said "Oh mom, you remember, don't you?" So I said yes sweetie I do. And I dropped it. I think I freaked out. I guess I should have asked more questions?

Many blessings,
Vannette

I didn't really believe in reincarnation until my daughter showed clear signs of a same family reincarnation. When she was just able to talk (under 2yrs of age) she would say that she was Nanny's mother. It was very matter of fact and she said that she would take care of Nanny. It wasn't at all like a game of "you be the baby and I'll be the mommy". Anyone who was there when she would say this would really sit up and take notice because there was something unusual happening. This included my parents, my then husband, friends, etc.

"Nanny", my then mother-in-law (now my ex MIL), was pretty much orphaned as a baby. Her mother died when she was around a year old of what we think was a heart attack. Her father left her with relatives who later left her at an orphanage. I believe that her mother came back through my daughter to look after her. This may be especially true since she was not close to my ex-husband until I pushed for a closer relationship to her for the sake of our child when I was pregnant with my daughter.

My daughter doesn't seem to remember her past life anymore. She stopped talking about it by the time she turned 5. I didn't have any resources then to know how to approach it at the time.

I would love to hear what you think of this experience.

Hi Jacqueline

I would encourage you to read Carol’s book Return From Heaven (if you haven’t already that is), as it is a book solely based upon same family reincanrnation and offers a lot of cases and insights that I’m sure you’d find interesting

Most children begin to “forget” or stop talking so much about their past life memories around the ages of 5+. Mainly because it is at this age that they are “enrolled” so to say, into society, through school, wider socialising, etc, where they are taught what is right and wrong, etc. They are taught to pay attention more to their left brained activities of logic and reasoning and less with their right brained activities of imagination and creativity (in the most general terms and definitions)

I would still encourage you to journal all that you do remember about her memories…little quirks, things she said, actions, emotions, etc and keep them in a safe place – you never know when you’ll next be writing in them, or maybe sharing them with your daughter when she chooses her own path of discovery

Hi! I just thought i would post a little bit about an experience in my family.
My mum, who is just about the most skeptical person i know told me this a few months ago, and it really interested me. I have a brother two years my junior. My fraternal grandfather died many years before we were born. My mum told me one day we were in the car driving through a part of the county that neither of us had been to before, my brother was three. He could barely talk properly, let alone form proper sentances usually. He turned to my dad and with complete conviction said 'do you remember when you were little, and i was your daddy, and we used to live there.' My dad had never even shown my mum his childhood home, and my brother was right. Dad told my mum later on, that was where he used to live. That threw them both a bit. I remember my brother refusing to call my dad 'dad' and insisting he call him by his real name until he was about 6 or 7.
I'm not sure if theres anymore to that, both parents are a bit funny if I ask about it. I love reading the postings on here! Its helping me work things out for myself.

Hi Lerry

What an interesting experience you shared…thank you

Does your brother carry any characteristics of your grandfather that you know of from listening to other family members, or has anyone else in the family commented on any similarities before???

He carries so many family traits, though these have been passed off as genetic. He looks so much like my dads side of the family, he's 6'2 (me, mum and dad are all under 5'8) and has my grandfathers curly hair. When he was little, he used to pronounce some words with a french accent, for example, cut would be curt. My gradfather was a fluent french speaker.

I think it is interesting that the child had HIMSELF as an imaginary friend. I have heard of that elsewhere on this board. I have been investigating my own past life, and also very curious as to WHO was the person behind my imaginary friend when I was young. It is the best clue I have to what my name might have been.

I can't help wondering if same family reincarnation is more frequesnt in families that are very close, where the bonds of love are stronger?
