WWI Anniversary

On June 28, 1914, Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian who hated being ruled by the Hapsburg's. This lit the fuse that several months later would erupt in gunfire and change the course of history. It would later be called the "Great War". But the 1918 Armistice would be short-lived. After 1940 the "Great War" was renamed "World War I".
 
And the rest is history! Any interested person can read up about that whole event elsewhere as there are loads of historical resources and even forums on the subject. Do you or anyone else perhaps have some memories or other reincarnation phenomena regarding the assassination or the war in general to share, in the interest of remaining with the topic of the board?
 
My life in the Great War is following me like a shadow lately, probably due to the centenary. For the past 5 days or so I've had a building anxiety, each program advertised on the TV bringing more feelings to the surface, until finally today my anxiety has peaked. As I dressed this morning there was a ghost in the forefront of my mind dressing beside me in his uniform, a scared young man readying for war. I feel both the need to try and shove these feelings and memories back so they don't bother me, but also to explore them and accept them. I can't afford a regression at the moment and I can't make it to any museums or exhibits for at least a month, so I'm hoping my PL ghosts are willing to wait a while...

Surprisingly, I find I've been fine. I suppose it's not really so surprising, WWI has never been triggered as hard or as consistently for me as WWII has, but I thought with the Centenary around my mind might shift a bit to it. Not so!


I'm thinking that it's a bit different for me, I live in America and we as a country just lack a focus on the first world war, compared to the countries that were more involved. There are several museums with a WWII focus or theme around, but WWI museums are extremely few and far between. I'd be lucky to find a few WWI things as sidenote exhibits, for example. So while I can drive four blocks from my house and see a billboard for a WWII museum and be reminded of that whole mess (seriously, there is one there AND another on my drive to work) I don't have TV and don't come across WWI stuff very often, despite it being the Centennial. Like usual, if I'm going to find it, I have to look for it.


So I take some times to read some articles or just some time to think on it, but it really isn't on my mind like I thought it'd be. My own little theory is that WWII was more traumatic for me and thus takes up a bit more of my spiritual/mental/whatever attentions, but WWI is sort of just 'back there' in comparison. I'm a bit disappointed but I'm going to do what I typically avoid doing and dedicate some more time and attention to the subjects and the feelings that come up, for if nothing else, I feel the time period deserves it.
 
I'm not sure if everyone saw it, but in France on Bastille Day they had a march with representatives of every army that fought in WWI. It was an amazing reminder of how things have changed since then. I doubt people would have even thought it would ever be possible that these countries would now all be allies and European wars pretty much a thing of the past.

Let's hope that in another 100 years, or hopefully less, the combantants in current conflicts will have learned to live together peacefully.

I heard that on the news the other day but hadn't seen it yet. And they even invited the Germans.
 
Even though I fought in WWI it barely affects me like the WWII stuff does. A lot of what Spatz has said is the same for me as well. In America we barely see or hear anything about WWI unless you are turning on the History Channel. I don't even subscribe to cable so the only time I am hearing about WWI is from the internet. No one talks about it and I never see advertisements or museums.


Similar to Spatz, I can only guess that the WWII stuff really overshadowed the WWI stuff to a point where it's so unimportant in that life. In fact, this has been common in general in that it is hard for me to get information about other past lives that aren't WWII because that is so pressing and ever present for me. At times it can be a real pain.


I'm looking at the Bastille Day article you linked Tanguerra but I am only seeing French troops marching in those pictures. It said they extended an invitation to all countries who participated but did any of them actually come? It doesn't make it clear if they did or not.


Argonne, why wouldn't France invite Germany? They are neighbors after all and regions of France are historically German with German people still living on them.

My PL stuff is starting to come to the surface again after a few months of quiet. Less than a week now till the anniversary of the start of British involvement. It's hard to avoid references here at present (although the Commonwealth Games are a good distraction), and some things are easier to deal with than others, but I feel more ready for anything that might come up than I used to be.
