I lived in France for a year from 2005 - 2006. I was with a host family in Paris. I would spend dinners babbling away in French, and sometimes use words that my family did not know. It became the family joke, that the American was teaching them French. Most of the words that I was using turned out to be rooted in sixteenth/seventeenth century French dialect when my family looked them up in the dictionary.
I've had similar experiences, in terms of dreaming in French and using words that I don't know consciously. This became a little wishy washy after I spent a year over there, mostly because I have so many words and phrases lurking in my passive vocabulary which I guess could ease into active vocabulary while I'm asleep.
I'm moving to France indefinitely in a week and a half. I'm excited to be able to sink my teeth into a place with which I seem to have so much history. I'll be moving to the region around Verdun in October - ironic, given that regression tells me that I was in the trenches in France in World War I. We'll see what else comes up..!
