Can you try too hard to remember?

Every night I ask the same type of question before going to sleep - "Who were we before, or, where were we before?" The 'we' is me and my husband. We both just know we've done many lifetimes together but no matter how hard I try I can't ever seem to 'remember' anything. He's called me his soulmate from day one and he seems to remember where I can't but he won't share anything with me, just smiles with a twinkle and says to trust him. I'm of the belief that God keeps sending us back here until we get it right and have known since I was a small child that there is so much more to life than humans can fathom but why can't I remember? I've bought the books and CD's, I just can't do it! Can you try so hard to remember that you actually block the memories? Anybody have the same problem and how did you break through?

I believe you can try too hard and simply get jammed up. I have related here how I was meditating on past lives very diligently and sure the sense of movement behind my third eye would soon develop into a vision of what I sought to learn. After several sessions I sensed some "movement" near my right ear and found everything I had been looking for had probably been behind me the whole time. From that point each meditation bore fruit and it was simply a letting go of any expectation as to where I would see it...simply know it is coming and allow it to happen...and look backwards!

Good luck!

Dreamerbe, personally do think that we can indeed try too hard to remember. Sometimes when we are trying so hard that do think that in actuality we are blocking the flow of things where we will not remember. We have to learn to relax and see what comes to the surface. And it can come to the surface in my opinion in many different forms. And hope that when it comes to the surface, that we will have the eyes to really be able to see it.

Also on a side note with this, have been noticing with myself as of late, that how much subconsciously am I blocking things at times because of various inner fears and so forth. So another thing to work on and ask ourselves is that are we really and truly ready for that of concerning our past lives to be revealed to us in our conscious minds and lives. We might think we are ready but down deep inwardly, in many ways we will not be ready and will block those things from coming up into our conscious minds and lives.

Just my two cents worth. Wishing You the Best!

Part of the answer is contained in your own knowledge that you've both spent many lifetimes together.

Yes, I think that we can try too hard to remember, and by that action we can thus become blocked. But, by trying, we are also learning about the nature of memory. We learn, for example, that our hearts can contain memories that our heads cannot; that we are drawn by nature to knowledge whose source we are unable to fathom; and that there are some things deeper and much more comprehensive than mere memories. So, I believe, that we should not stop seeking; but that, at the same time, we should also be ready to accept what we learn along the way, even if we fail to achieve our desired objective. For it is the effort of achieving the goal that is important—not the goal, itself.

"Chill out and let the colors flow, man!" We used to say that when we were kids and we wanted someone to relax. I'd suggest some quiet time. No CDs, no books, no nothing. Recline someplace comfortable, turn off the cell phone, the TV, etc. Just unplug and let your mind wander, not holding on to any image. If a flying walrus flits through your mind, let it. Don't stare at it. Eventually your mind will begin to weave a story for you. You'll remember it if it's important.

This method has always worked for me. Trying too hard to study and analyze the images only served to destroy them, like touching a bubble causes it to pop.

Welcome to the past life forum!

You have already had lots of great advice here - I'll just validate again that, yes, you can try too hard to remember! Personally I don't do anything to deliberately try to remember, I just let the memories/flashes/dreams come whenever they are meant to. I may occasionally listen to a regression/meditation CD, but that's really about it - as someone noted above, trying to hard can literally 'block' memories.

Time will tell, let it unfold and enjoy the process!

Glad you have joined us!

thank you

Thank you all for the validation of being on the right path! I've been told several times that I have a strong 3rd eye and should learn to utilize it but my mind is in perpetual motion; the more intent I am on trying to "look back" the more my mind races, and yes, I unplug and block out everything when I'm by myself. Mostly, I try to find my answers as I drift off to sleep. My dreams are very random and don't seem to be trying to tell me anything, at least I don't think so, but then there are times that all of the randomness seem to make sense if I tie them altogether but there is so much missing! I sense someone to my left every single day several times a day but there is no feeling that comes with it; no darkness or cold or light or happy, just a blur out of my left eye. I've also been told that there a wall of people protecting me, one in particular is a tall man in a long duster type of coat wearing a cowboy hat and the other is a white haired lady. The lady is definitely my grandmom we were ubelievably close and I am devestated to this day that she's been gone ten years. I strongly believe that the man is my husband as he touts himself as being sent here to protect me. Like I said earlier, I know that he knows about our past but he won't tell me anything and the harder I try and 'remember' the more uneasy he gets. I've actually been coming to this site for years, I just finally got up enough nerve to join the party! I've been fascinated by all of you for so long, it's nice to know you'll help me find my way! Thank you so much for your input and guidance.

Hi Dreamerbe,

Perhaps you have seen me post this about 6 years ago. Since your 6th chakra is open this should be an easy step for you: I hope it helps. It's about moving consciousness within the third eye into the heart center and merging the two.

Moving consciousness into the heart center is not a matter of thinking of my heart. I must feel it and be present in mind, body and spirit.
Try the following exercise:

  • close your eyes
  • be present IN your body
  • move your hand over your heart center -about 5 inches
  • above it
  • FEEL the vibration in your heart center when you do
  • notice consciousness - expands

Past life memories for me often come when I merge my third eye center (which is different than the mind) and heart center - the two become one. At that point I am not trying to remember, I am not imagining the past, I am in it. It is more than a feeling, more than a flash - it becomes my NOW. Every sensation is as if I am there, sights, sounds, smells, touch.

Past life experiences are not something you can go after, or obtain from a psychic, they are not something outside of the self. It shouldn't be a game of WHO am I. It is about learning to know Thyself.

The ancient Greeks considered all learning to be remembering. To them, life was but the act of recollecting knowledge the soul had forgotten at the moment of birth into the physical body. Reincarnation and the idea of past lives were an integral part of their worldview.

Perhaps this explains why the word education originally meant ‘to draw from that which was already known.’ Past life work is more than an exploration about past lives, and who we are. The heart of the matter is not - who am I. But, why am I.
It is also helpful to ask a specific question regarding a feeling or an emotion between you two. Ask about the - first time you loved him and be open to the possibility that he might have been your sister, your brother, your mother, your uncle or a spouse. Go into the feeling. Remember the feeling the rest will follow.

Flashes

I've been putting the new tools I'm learning from you all and I've started experiencing "flashes" of images and feelings that don't seem to make sense by themselves but hopefully putting them altogether will make one big picture. I do agree that I'll probably find out that my husband and I didn't have the same relationship that we do now and I'm okay with that, I just need to know what we were. Hang in there with me folks, this may be a bumpy ride but with your help along the way I know I'll be fine! :D

Just my two-penneth, but I'd like to say I agree with what everyone has said. The harder you try, the more the memories are blocked. i've been interested in past lives on-and-off for about 6 years now, but only recently got into researching my own past lives seriously in the last few months. I was constantly thinking about what it all meant and got very frustrated that nothing was coming to me. so in the last few weeks I've tried putting it all to the back of my mind and just getting on with THIS life (after all, isn't that what we're meant to be doing? : angel). If I am meant to remember anything from previous lives, I will, if I'm not, I won't. But since doing that, just putting it to one side, I've started getting a few little flashes and have put a few clues together. As a consequence, I've come to the conclusion that being seriously interested in past lives allows the memories to come, but the actual remembering must come in its own time without being forced.

Sorry if that didn't make much sense, its hard to put into words

With me, I know trying too hard, just makes it worse, and if I don't record it verbatim the first minute I wake up, it quickly vanishes.

The time honored statement to record your dreams in a log or journal type book doesn't take into consideration our aging population with health issues.

I have Arthritis in my hands, among other issues, and writing is very painful, if not impossible, especially early in the morning prior to my medications.

I’ve started suggesting to people to start using a tape recorder (of any type or size) and keep it within easy reach when you wake up.

Among awakening, reach for the recorder and record your memories of your dreams from the night before, the sooner, the better the recollection and it is more accurate.

Just thought I would pass this along, I know it works for me in recalling dreams, now if I can just dream something important! ;)

That's a neat idea hydrolad - I've never thought of using a tape recorder...If I wake up and know my dream was a past life clue, I will start writing instantly, with whatever details come to mind first. Using a recorder is a cool idea too though!
