First time I witnessed it happen - and my reaction was stupid...

I am the mother of a two-years-old daughter. This makes me meet with a lot of kids and their parents. I usually enjoy talking to kids for it is fun listening to them, their ideas and unstructered thoughts...Yesterday we were at the playground and while my daughter played a 3,5 years old girl started talking to me. She was really cute and told me about a visit to Berlin. This was from this life and, according to her mother, a true event. I then talked to her mother and told her that it was fun talking to her daughter. She replied that the kid had such a vivid imagination. She told me that the girl told her that she once was involved into a car accident, that she drove the car and was involved into an accident with a truck. Nothing bad happened to her and she didn`t have to pay or the damage. That was all...I answered something stupid like: "Yes, kids at this age tell a lot of things" or so. Even tough I have always thought I knew better. I do not know if this was really a past life memorie, I didn`t hear the girl talk about it. I absolutely do not know how to react. I do not wish to be considered weird and, most important of all, I do not want to interfere with other peoples`faith and religion. Reincarnation and reincarnation research are foreign concepts to most people I know. What would you do? I am prepared to hear more about this from kids but not sure about how to react...

Hi Iris!

My opinion is to let it go and NEVER...I mean NEVER interfere with anyone's family. The second thing I would do is to presume that a child's comment could be imagination based on something he or she witnessed or overheard. After all, many children are quite capable of picking up information, regardless of their age; and the amount of media they are exposed to is immeasurable.

On the other hand, I think it is deplorable for anyone to openly minimize a child's statement -- especially in a manner that would directly or indirectly affect them. Parents, teachers and caregivers often try to discourage such "strange talk" before the child is exposed to the searing criticism of their peers and schoolmates, because they know how it can cause a child great pain. They often rationalize that it is better to nip it in the bud now, than later.

There may be exceptional cases in which a wise older person may look into the eyes of a child, recognizing a connection, and instinctively communicating; that what is known, is known in our hearts, and need not be put into words.

I think my response (and this is a practiced response I have used to keep from offending anyone's religious sensitivities) would be to chuckle a little and say something to the mother like "if you believed in this reincarnation thing, that might make an interesting story." Sometimes I've gotten a curious question or a "I never gave it much thought." This lets me toss out a small line without preaching, such as "Some people have claimed some interesting memories, and not all were if famous people. Might be fun to look at at the very least." Other times I get an enthusiastic "No, no, no, no." At this point I shift gears and laugh, saying something like "Yeah, everybody was Cleopatra or Napoleon." I let it drop at that point, change subjects, or politely take my leave. The ability to change masks quickly is one of my strong points!

This above post caused me to recall the first time I met her in my neighborhood, at a time when neighborhood's were considered safe and people sat on their front porches at night to visit with their neighbors.

In past posts, I refer to her "private nickname" as the "Ancient One", a term of respect that I still use, but back then, she was, say Mrs. Brooks (not her real name) back when children never referred to their elders, except with their honorific (Mr. Mrs. Dr. Rev. etc.)

Back when I first met her, I was returning one of her cats who had gotten loose and when she answered her door, I didn't realize the significance then, but a look of recognition passed on her face as she looked down at me cradling her cat (who didn't like kids, but for some reason, liked me!).

She must have been in her 70's (real old back then) and I was a scrawny, red-headed 9 year old kid from down the block, but we immediately liked each other.

She must of sensed something special in me, because over time she slowly opened up to me and began telling me of the various disciplines, including her recollections and memories of Reincarnation, and I began to understand them more.

If my Grand-Mother only knew what we talked about, everything from "A to Z" (Astral Projection to Zoroaster), but she thought I was just being a good neighbor to Mrs. Brooks and I was.

Nowadays people are more reserved and cautious around others and children are taught to fear everyone, even family is suspect, what a sad world we've become when we don't even trust those we once trusted in a previous life!

However for that first time, when a look of recognition and understanding passed between us, a look that I would learn later on, contained knowledge of each other, accumulated through the ages and the mists of time!
