German Woman WWII

Red Night

This is actually the only life where I have memories from. It's great because to me I don't feel like I'm making them up, where as I do with quite a few.

I only have two memories so far, and they are the following:

1. I remember lying in bed (I remember my bedroom very well) and my husband walked into the room with just a white towel wrapped around his waist. This is more or less an image; I can just see him standing there.

It's funny, because we lived with my parents (we didn't plan to have our own home until the war ended) and he couldn't even be bothered to put a robe on or get dressed while he was still in the bathroom. He was a bit bold I guess. I don't particularly remember him caring very much what other people thought of him. He was quiet too. I don't think I loved him unfortunately, but I didn't dislike him. I feel I married him only because I had this ideal in my head to start my own little, happy family without really taking into consideration all that that entailed.

2. I remember giving birth to my first son. I was at home and their was a doctor at the foot of my bed, and a nurse to his right. This nurse, for whatever reason, looked scared out of her mind. My sister, Hani, was at my left and my mother was at my right. The thing I remember most is how much I cared for them and vise-versa at that moment. Hani in particular, because we really didn't get along that well.
It was windy that day too. The sky was gray and I think it was snowing or raining. It was pretty dreary out and the window was creaking slightly.

I don't 'remember' it happening, but I'm almost certain I killed myself in the summer of 1945 in this life.

Well, anyway that's all I have so far. If anything else comes to mind I'll be sure to post! Thanks for reading!

That's cool that you're starting to get somewhere with all of this. :)

I'm going to PM you a link you might find interesting - it's about the German homefront in WWII.

Have you thought of blogging or somehow making a sort of journal for these as you get them?

Thanks for sharing Red Night, it's memories like these that I find the most convincing, just ordinary everyday things, although giving birth isn't just an ordinary everyday thing, but you know what I mean!

Kapitan: Hmm, a blog may be a good idea. I'll have to think about it...

Wuxin: I hope to share more! :D

Chris: Yeah, I think that's one of the reasons why I believe them too, they're very 'normal.'

Also, I wanted to describe my bedroom, but I actually modeled it on the computer, and this is more or less what it looked like. Of course not exactly, but similar. And the furniture was made my other people on Google Sketchup (the program I used):

Oh that's cool - that image. I didn't know one could create rooms using that program - then again I didn't know about the program. I typically wind up making a sketch, but I usually like to try to describe it in words - although making a sketch is easier for me.

Sometimes, after I have either a dream or a vision of a place, I try to research it. Like recently there was a vision of a place that I had also dreamt about and I wanted to see if I could find any photos on postcards of this place. So I went to Alte Ansichtskarten where they have all these old post cards. I couldn't find my place, but that doesn't mean it never existed...it just means that as of yet I have not found any 'photographic proof'...so I just put it on the 'back burner' and wait.

That program though would definitely come in handy for me!

Like Chris - those are the memories I enjoy having...the 'every day' type ones. Out of all of my memories - the two subjects that I have the most memories about (with regards to the WWII era) are my first wife and my time in the U-Boats. I by far enjoy the ones regarding the time with my first wife more though.

Something I think is a memory:

I see my brother, who I think was in the Luftwaffe, sitting in an arm chair in our sitting room.

I also feel that I listened to a lot of clandestine music and radio broadcasts. My brother disapproved, but I think it was only to appease his conscience because he would object and then stay quiet. My husband on the other hand was really against it though. The music at least; I don't really know how he felt about us listening to Allied broadcasts...

Don't worry, a lot of Germans listen to Allied broadcasts. Even high class Gestapos like me. ;) But of course, most of the time we have to listen illegally. But I remembered I got caught by Herr Goebbels.. You will not believe the lecture I got listening to music 'unfit for the third Reich'.. (Seriously, man!?) He didn't actually say that, by the way.. He said it in a very racist way. But I shan't go into that.

What Wuxin said was true - cause we also did that on the U-Boats.

I think the ultimate irony with us is that we were the least political of all the forces and yet at the end of the day it was Doenitz who was put in charge of Germany after Hitler's death - go figure.

I can send you some links that are related to this if you're interested - they're radio broadcasts and another site is a 'virtual library' of vintage music mp3's.

Yeah, I read a book once called 'The Nazi Officer's Wife' and the lady who wrote it mentioned her and her neighbors listening to the BBC.

Anyway, Kapitan, I would love to see that link! I have a couple old broadcasts on my radio, which I like to listen to sometimes, but the more the merrier!

Today, I had a memory of watching my husband (we weren't married yet) playing lacrosse an indoor gymnasium area. He wasn't a professional or anything but it was something he did for fun. I was sitting with my best friend (?) watching him and his team practice; she wanted to see what he looked like and that was why we were there.

The room was obviously large with bleachers, and at one end there was a picture of Hitler on the wall flanked by two large, long red flags with Swastikas. At the opposite end of the bleachers was a row of windows high up in the wall....

I'm still struggling with whether or not these are real, but... only time will tell.

Looks like a PL memory but only you can tell.

Lacrosse, its like hockey, right?

I checked back the sketch on Plaszow I made, turns out it was actually the SS-Junkerschule Bad Tolz.. Oh well..

Yeah, I actually think this one was just my imagination... Oh well.

I feel like I have so many memories sitting in the back of my mind but I can't get to them; like there's this block. It's kind of irritating and I don't have the patience to meditate on them... :(

I always anticipate too much. And don't think it'll really work, deep-down.

Yea, I know. Its extremely frustrating. But we'll hack there. I've heard that memories only surface if you need them.. But still, it is frustrating.

Anticipate too much, and like me, a lot of false ones are gonna come out. As though your brain is screaming 'Take these and leave! NOW! I'll get back to you when you're not here.'
