Hi Mamakaykay,
My son also gave the "i just know" answer a lot and talked excessively about God. I determined after some interesting conversations with him that he actually had quite a bit of memory of the between life state. He just didn't understand that is where he was before he came here. Its got to be a tough thing for them to wrap their minds around. He really did remember God and being 'in heaven before he was born.' He doesn't talk about it nearly as much. He will turn 7 in a few days.
We too are not religious and my husband is also an atheist raised Southern Baptist.
One thing about the "I just know" answer is that for us, it always seemed to come up when it was something that he really didn't know how he knew or could not articulate that what he was expressing had happened to him 'in heaven before he was born.' I learned to really pay attention the the "I just know" answers.
Once when we were at Deborah's house, we were looking at a painting that she had done with some women and I think one of them was plowing in a field. He was talking about the woman performing this farming task - I don't clearly remember the picture but when I asked him how he knew it (I think he was 5 at the time and had not ever seen anyone farm) he gave me an 'I just know' answer.
At 4, you still know what your child knows and is exposed to but once they hit 5 or 6 and start school, its hard to know where it all comes from. Bear with me, I have a point. I didn't know if he had ever seen a picture of someone farming because he had started kindergarten by that time. However, the 'I just know' answer tipped me off that it may be past life knowledge. I write that kind of stuff down and keep it for future reference if he says anything else. So far, its related to nothing but you never know.
