Is it a lesson, or random?

As I was saying in a previous thread, I strongly believe that I had a past life as a German fighter pilot in WWII, and my boyfriend strongly believes that he had a past life as an American medic in WWII.

I am wondering if people think that these kind of relationships occur completely randomly, or is there something more to them? For example, do we feel drawn to relationships with people who were the 'enemy' in a previous life because we are trying to work out that life's karma?

I ask because a lot of our frustrations with each other seem to be related to the people we were in those lives, too. We try not to let our past lives color our current relationship, but there are certain personality aspects that we think might stem from our past lives. I am very very insistent on being in control of the way my life is ordered, and I tend to see unpleasant or boring things as a job I just have to do. He is very much focused on helping other people and tends to see every event as significant and sees it as more than just a job. He sees life in the military as a calling or a passion, whereas I see it as a job. This is consistent with our past life personalities, as far as we remember.

Have you had relationships with someone who was an 'enemy' in a previous life? Do you think it's related to a lesson we're supposed to learn (ie, me having to learn to let go more, and him having to learn to not take things so hard), or is it utterly random chance?

Hi Sarque,

I do not believe in random chance. I always think there's a reason behind people being or getting together in a life. There's a higher goal behind it imo and the lesson you describe here fits perfectly in that vision and makes a pretty good base for living consciously towards that purpose. It would not surprise me if you two had encountered in WWII or were even involved into something. But I also think it's not that important to know because you already know for yourselves what you can learn out of it. Reincarnation is about returning with some traits from the past to evolve for the better and become complete!

Hi Sarque!

I like to believe that everything has a kind of synchronicity for some reason. I don't understand why; because that would mean that everything is, somehow, predetermined as well. While I believe in synchronicity, I also believe, strongly, in free will. It may be that these two incongruous theories manage, somehow, to reconcile with each other.

On the issue of past life enemies reconciling with each other, I don't think it is, necessarily, that much of an issue to be resolved in this life, because we have been removed from the circumstances in which we were enemies. Those who do genealogical research can testify to countless cases in which the offspring of differing antagonists have had relatively peaceful unions without issues of the previous generation. My own family is peppered with instances of offspring, who choose former enemies as spouses. So too, previous lifetimes as enemies do not set up situations in this life, which have to be resolved.

I do believe, however, that people are drawn together by their common experiences, which may happen to include having been wartime enemies. But the lessons to be learned, if any, are a result of circumstances that are much more personal, and, therefore, more difficult to determine. One individual may be learning to let go, while the other is learning not to take things so hard. But, neither of these issues, I think, have anything to do with the markings on their uniforms in a past life.

It seems to be the norm, rather than the exception, to meet up again with people we have known before. People refer to these people as the 'soul group'. They can be former friends, family, lovers or even enemies.

Is this because we have 'unfinished business' or just because we enjoy hanging out with these people or a bit of both? Maybe our 'vibrations' just attract each other like atoms forming into certain types of molecules. Is it all worked out in advance, or does 'stuff' just 'happen'. Perhaps it is some kind of combination of all of the above?
