Pearl Harbor Day

This is the day. Many people died and many had their memories seared by the experience. I saw this article about a man who lived through that day, but could never talk about it until recently. The talking about it brought some healing, which is something good to know for all of us:

Also, I post it to commend what has been called the "greatest generation", who were the grown-ups and parents of my generation and is now rapidly passing away. Many were like this man, holding it in and not speaking about the horrible stuff they experienced. That was the Way of Manliness when I was growing up. It built some very stern, tough-minded characters, but probably drove even more to alcoholism or worse.

My own father was in the Merchant Marine, carrying supplies to the UK--and trying to avoid the subs. Many ships sank and many men died. He didn't talk about his experiences until he was close to death, then he spoke to my older brother about having to steam through water which was on fire with burning fuel and turn your head away from the screaming men floundering in the water around you. To stop was death. Dead in the water your ship was an easy target for another torpedo. I can see now how it probably caused some of the things that I dreaded about him, but also how the Great Depression and WWII also shaped him for the better.

Well, both parents are gone now and that generation is almost gone with them. They were the greatest generation, but not forever. We are not made of the same stuff, but I think it will come out again sometime when the need is greatest. Anyhow, please feel free to post about the date, and also about the people you have known from that generation.

It seems a little strange that our experiences are again similar as my father was drafted into the Navy where he served on the Pontus, LST 201, where the LST was laughingly referred to as meaning Large Submarine Target. My first father-in-law was in the Rainbow Division and recalled liberating a concentration camp and given liberty to go find his brother's burial site at the end of the European campaign (holding a ship from deployment while given a jeep and driver for three days to accomplish it). My current father-in-law was just out of high school when he volunteered at the end of the war in Europe, he is still around and lives in your State most of the year. It was a time of a terrible loss of life, the numbers of various things are staggering. It is said that the reason that we were successful was that we were capable of the production to meet the demands at that time; the USA produced - Guns and Howitzers. 41,000. Landing Craft. 82,000. Tanks and Armored Vehicles. 100,000. Ships of All Type. 124,000. Aircraft. 310,000. We could possibly not match that today!

Hi Ken,

I really appreciate those guys. We thought we were so smart, and criticized everything about them, but I think they built a better America and world in their day than anything that had existed before. There have definitely been some improvements since then, but there have also been losses. Your summary of production capability is probably an indication of some of those losses. I remember when America "Hummed" with business and production. Not all good, not all pretty, plenty of pollution and plenty of shallow materialism, but still we've lost a lot of our former self-sufficiency both at a national level and at an individual level. Plus, people should remember that our generation was NOT in charge when many of the most important post-war social changes took place. Our parent's generation was still at the helm to begin the process of integration, start the process of cleaning up pollution, and to make numerous other celebrated and needed changes. One of the last of the old warriors was Robert Dole, who ran against Clinton in '96, so you can see how long their influence lasted. They were still a force to be reckoned with through the 90s, but the new century has brought their time of direct influence to an end. However, as far as I am concerned they are still indirectly influencing us by their example--and that, on the whole, for the better.

Cordially,
S&S
