The Wild Wolf Encounter

Now thought I would share a remarkable wolf encounter that I had in my last hike. Hope this is permissable here and if not then be free to do whatever with this thread. But I thought I would share this experience with everyone. Also I just came out from my last long hike in the wilds on last Monday where I was in the Wyoming mountain wilds since the beginning of June. Hope you do enjoy!

Now before I get to the experience with the wild wolf, just want to remark how much it seems our human society and us Human Two Leggeds have there been such a deep relationship with dogs and the canine species. And it seems if one goes back in our human history, how much does this close relationship with the canine species exists thruout our species and the canine species in many various races and cultures to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. And how much to this day can our dogs and canine companions be such a part of our lives and families it seems.

Now it was a the end of the hike and the day before that I came out to the trailhead. On this day, nearby in a mountain meadow not far from camp, there was this Sow Grizzly with three yearling cubs that I had watched that morning and again in the evening. Had watched the Sow Grizzly from a safe distance and it was a wonderful experience just watching these wild bears just doing their thing. Later in the evening before dark, went on back nearby to camp. Here at a place called the Soda Fork Meadows, I had made camp where I have often camped before. And yes in the area is a local wolf pack. This evening there were some Elk and Deer out in the meadows that evening like usual. Then up on a ridge above the meadows, could see 3 wolves approaching the meadows. Now of the 3 wolves, one was a magnificent large white wolf with some grey and black on the sides. The other two wolves was a black one and a black and tan one. Now when these wolves came into the meadow, they gave chase to the elk and the deer that was in the meadow. But they got away with the wolves having to go on with their seemingly empty stomachs. Then sometime shortly afterwards, they left the meadows with coming by right outside my camp. The black and the black/tan wolves went on their way. But it was the white wolf that I had the exceptional encounter with. When the white wolf was bypassing at a distance from my camp, it stopped and looked directly at me. And I just stopped and gazed at this white wolf. Here then was this white wolf and myself just gazing and looking at each other with like 100 yards between us and for like 10 to maybe 15 plus minutes in length. There was some connection here between us that it seemed to go much further then I could not express in mere words. But it seemed to be at some deeper more spiritual level. I was never afraid of my life during the experience. Also it seemed to be soooo much more then mere curiousity. I remember just looking at that magnificent white wolf and it's black eyes with it's white face just standing and gazing at me. I do not know what the thoughts of that wolf were. But at the time felt such a connection with this wild wolf and so thought of the connections we Humans have had with our canine companions since our Hunter-Gatherer days. It even crossed my mind what have our canine companions have gained from becoming such close companions of us Humans. But again here was this wild magnificent white wolf just standing there and gazing at me which I returned. After this intense encounter the wolf slowly went on it's way and rejoined its companions. Have thought on this experience since .... just what was that wolf thinking do wonder. There was such an intense connection when I looked into those eyes. How much in our human history have our canine companions been a part of it.

There was so much here that went beyond just mere words. But just wanted to share. And to our canine companions who might share their lives with us Human two leggeds to some degree.

Hope you have enjoyed. Wishing Everyone the Best!

I sincerely believe that there is a mysterious bond that many of us share with animals, especially our canine cousins. It goes well beyond DNA or any other measurable feature. I'm not talking about the "awww" response by typical animal and dog lovers; for as much as I love dogs, I would not hoard them merely for the sake of their species, nor would I trust a strange one more than I would trust a strange human. But I have known such connections with some animals for which there was no practical explanation. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.

That was beautiful. Reminded me of a similar encounter, not with a wolf, but with a coyote. This coyote had chosen to stoll though Housekeeping Camp in Yosemite before dusk and had gotten a lot of attention. Lots of kids- I had to yell at them to stay back, leave the way open. At one point the coyote stopped, turned and looked at me and our eyes met. Like you said, a connection that goes beyond words... I saw COYOTE , the trickster, the one who creates chaos.

The Deer

Very similar to an incident years ago that happened to me when I was a teenager about 14, my Mother was in the Hospital and my Church invited me to go to Summer camp, but we couldn’t pay for it, so they offered me a job in the Kitchen/Dining building to pay my way.

I went and one afternoon, I had completed my chores at the camp and slipped out the back door of the Kitchen into a heavily wooded area and after walking carefully through the woods, I came to a clearing with a fallen tree so I sat on it to rest.

I was worried about my Mom, my Grandmother had died several months ago and as a teenager I was confused about a lot of things, so I sat there, feeling really down and sad, when all of a sudden this female deer came into the clearing and spotted me sitting quietly there on the log.

I had seen her earlier near our camp with a fawn, so I figured the fawn was nearby, and she started to graze while coming closer to me so I just sat there, not moving, while she approached me, close enough for her to sniff me over, and close enough for me to touch her, had I not been afraid of scaring her.

While she stood there with me, I felt my mood and spirits lift, and it was as if she had been sent to calm me, then she slowly walked away, turning back to look at me and then she was gone, and to this day, I can still remember it like it was yesterday!!!

Great post, hydrolad.

Near where I live there are three baby albino deer and a mama albino deer. They are amazing to watch, whitetail.

Thankfully there is a sign on the local deer processing plant that says : "We do not process albino deer." I hope they are left to live out long lives. Luckily they picked a quiet neighborhood to live in where there is no place for hunters to shoot them. I hope they stay there.

Intuition, Learning, Spirit
This totem brings faithfulness, inner strength

and intuition when he enters our lives.

But he also brings learning to live with one's self.

The wolf teaches us to learn about our inner self

and to find our inner power and strength.

But to achieve this, we must take risks

and face our deepest fears.

A wolf totem demands sincerity.

If the eyes and ears are open, the leaves of the trees become as pages of the Bible. If the heart is alive, the whole life becomes one single vision of His sublime beauty, speaking to us at every moment.

I'm into the third book in "A Game of Thrones" now, and can't stop reading. The sigil of the Starks is the wolf, and the children have intimate spiritual connections with wolves. It's fantasy, of course, but so interesting. I live in Southern California, so we haven't much "nature", but I am located near an area called Oak Glen. Many times, when I go there, I receive what I would call post cards from God - an unexpected snowfall, or an animal encounter. Once, coming down from the hill, we encountered a group of six or seven deer, grazing in the green median strip. All the cars stopped, and there was, fortuitously, a bus full of school children. The beauty and surprise of that sight will always be with me.
