How did your memories start for you?

How did your memories start for you? Were they full-blown memories or just little glimpses? Were you regressed or did something trigger them?
Lately I've been getting these really, really tiny little glimpses of things that seem incredibly far off and I'm not really sure if they mean anything or not. Only time will tell and I've learned my lesson about jumping to conclusions and letting my imagination get the best of me. I'm just interested in how it all began for others.

Thanks in advance for sharing, and I'm sorry if there's already a thread like this. I just thought it would be interesting! :)

For me, the memories have always been there, ever since as far back as I can remember - I just didn't realise that they were memories of another lifetime until many years later. I can remember a very vivid dream when I was just a toddler, a dream that reoccurred on a regular basis. In the dream I was a 'grown up' girl. It felt odd, because to a toddler, I guess the dream felt like reality, and my 'real' life felt like the dream if that makes sense?

Although the dream repeated itself over and over through the years, I could never get beyond a certain point until I had my first regression 6 years ago, which seemed to open the floodgates to a whole lifetime which was as new to me as it was familiar! :)

Like ChrisR, some of my memories have been with me forever, though it took some analysis to realize they didn't come from this lifetime. Others come in lucid dreams, which is a misnomer as they are simply very clear memories from other times...some of which are more meaningful and clear than any current memories I can recall right now.

I was brought into this current line of thought and research through a 2006 vision of a woman I had once been engaged to nearly 18 years before. This lifesize vision brought with it an amazingly complete set of memories and emotions and even left her perfume on my jacket...and the questions it provoked resulted in my current direction.

For me, the memories began shortly after I was born. The dreams or rather the nightmares, occurred occasionally. I did not understand what they were. They were all little glimpses, standing in lines, trains, barbed wire and the overwhelming smell of burning human flesh. They continued until I was grown and married. My husband was in the Navy and he brought home a book he had borrowed from a fellow sailer. The book was about Edgar Cayce. I read the book and the proverbial AHA!! moment occurred. So that is what the dreams are all about. At that moment the dreams ceased. It was as if my last thought was that "I will never forget this" and so I was remembering my last life. Unfortunately the smell did not go away so easily. I could think about the smell and it would fill my nose with the horrible stench. It took 10 years for that to finally go away. I have since had a number of other glimpses of other lives and firmly believe in reincarnation, since I have my own memories.

I had a dream once when I was about three years old after I had almost drowned in our pool. I was standing on a long dock on a lake and there was a small row boat in front of me. I was with a man who was my father and he told me to wait there for him before getting in the boat. He walked down the dock and into a little shack. Maybe it was a lure shop or perhaps he had to pay to rent the boat so we could go out on it. I really don't know. Anyway, once he was out of sight, I disobeyed him and tried getting into the little boat but I slipped and went right into the water. I can still see my all the air bubbles and my arms flailing around me; it was very much like the incident in our pool, only the water was brown and darker. And that's the end of the dream.

I wonder if the accident in the pool triggered a memory in my young mind? What strikes me is the straightforwardness of it; there wasn't anything 'out of the ordinary.' Hmm, food for thought I guess.

Like others, some of my memories I have remembered from the start. As a little kid I told my mom even more, much of which I do not remember now. My mom & I can be clairvoyant at times, and thus we have always listened closely to our dreams/experiences, making them important. I had been keeping a 'dream journal' for years by the time I was about 12 - which was when I started having more dreams about past lives. I may have had many before that age, I just didn't recognize what I was seeing.

Reincarnation was always accepted in my family. It would be hard for me to pin down my first PL memory. I know they said I was my dad's grandmother in a PL, but that is a notion that my own intuition soundly rejected. They were projecting, in my opinion. I've come to rely on my intuition, and when a memory comes up, I look for how many of the 5 senses come along with it. I have some false memories of this life that, though strongly imprinted on my memory somehow, are only there in vision. (I know they are false because the people in question in the memory never visited us when we lived in that town.) But when a good link to a PL comes through, I will see, hear, taste, feel, and smell the memory.

Hi Red,

I'd have to say that I'm a combo of that slow awakening and the always-there-but-never-recognized group. For me it was a series of encounters with people and places, along with dreams and waking memories. I honestly thought I was having some mental issues. One day I was deep into a trance of thought in my office and a woman came into my office. I was so lost in thought that I didn't hear her come into my office. She startled me awake when she spoke, asking me the question "where were you?" It's funny how that simple question sparked a chord of thought that has led me on a long, long journey into past lives. I asked her what she meant and she dropped the idea of past places in my lap. I think I joked it aside and went on with my business but the seed was planted. Coincidentally, AND in wonderful synchronicity, another friend was reading the book Many Lives Many Masters... well, I was overwhelmed by the idea and from that moment forward KNEW! About six months later I researched for a regression therapist, went there and was forever changed.

Now I know what to pay attention to. I can kinda see what is past life related and what is not... its like a spiritual intuition. Of course studying it like I have all these years has helped too, including the participation on this forum.

Great question, thanks for asking!

I've had lots of memories that came through in writing stories, it wasn't until I started having flash backs that I realized the characters I where writing about were people I knew.

Amy, I have always believed those who wrote the historical novels such as "Gone with the Wind" were actually tapping into their experiences in a past life.

For myself, I have since birth experienced bits and pieces of my past lives, anything from a snippet of a sensation to a full blown "I am there in that body" experience. It's such a part of my being that I would be lost without this extra sense.

Thought it might be interesting to hear how past life memories started for others.

For me, they started in my mid-twenties, with feelings and hunches and emotions about certain times and places, although curiosity had been there for a time before that. My first actual memories came through meditation and regression CDs, as both visual memories and spoken words in my mind.

Hi Helz,

I'm very interested in your statement about "spoken words in my mind" as I just had that happen to me a few days ago (for the first time in my life). Please provide some additional information in terms of your experience of this.

Cordially,

Hi S&S, sure :) when I experience 'spoken words in my mind' it literally is that, when my mind is calm enough during mediation I may 'hear' words spoken internally, usually in response to a question I ask myself before starting a meditation. Sometimes it has happened too when asking myself a question whilst in a slightly distracted state of mind, like when doing the washing up. It is hard to say what the source of the words is (deep levels of the subconscious are probably a good bet), but whatever the source, the information received has so-far checked out with research into those past lives and the historical context.

Hi Helz,

This sounds exactly like what I experienced and reported (Post #51) on the "Will we retain what we've learned about our PL's" thread.

Tang responded saying this was not unusual, but I would appreciate it if you would have a look and give me your thoughts. It was a first time for me, but it sounds like I can probably expect more of this in the future as my memories begin to open up. Interesting.

Cordially,

I will refer to the OP as well as this question, because it may be of interest to more than just S&S.

I had past life memories since pretty much I can remember as a small child, but I didn't know what it was and was not bothered by it. I assumed it was normal.

Sometimes it would be 'visual'. For instance, I recall being very young, maybe 4 or 5 and my mother took me to the old style local butcher's shop, which still used to exist back then, with saw dust on the floor and meat hanging up on hooks. The butcher was a big jolly fellow, with a stripy apron and knives hanging from his belt, joking with all the housewives. I thought this was all very interesting as a little girl to see all this going on. But suddenly I could 'see' him, or maybe 'imagine' him is a better word, but really I 'recognised' him. I could picture him wearing a Tudor style frilly collar, wearing an old style suit, like this image below. I saw him sitting at a table, at some kind of dinner party, raising a goblet of wine. This kind of thing happened quite a lot and I didn't really worry about it too much, but I remember this incident as it was quite startling.

There were some instances where the experience was more 'kynesthetic' like the time when I was about the same age and I was possessed to jump up and start doing some kind of highland fling at a party my parents took me to. I describe that incident here: Scotland

I have recounted various stories where a piece of music will suddenly thrust me back in time, so to speak. Some people will have a word, like a name of a person or a place, that just keeps resonating with them. Often people tell stories in the forum about having a dream which was about a single word in a foreign language that they then find out has a past life connection.

Others will talk about having a sharp pang of nostalgia when looking at a photo or TV show about a piece of landscape where they have never been. I have had that happen to me too. More than once people have described going to a certain town, for instance in Europe or Japan, where they've never been before, but knowing their way around perfectly and feeling strange feelings of deja vu around every corner.

There are lots of different ways to have these kinds of experiences in short.

It might not mean anything, but when I was small, I thought I remembered being old. Our neighbor was elderly, and she used to tell me stories about when she was young. It seemed natural for me in turn to share stories about when I was old. People just thought I was being funny and imaginative, but I thought i was just swapping stories about our experiences. Maybe I was just imagining -- I can't remember anything I specifically said, except about how much I claimed to love riding horses (and had never been on a horse.)

My memories started when I was about 8 years old. They have occurred about one every 2 years since, on average, although some times they have occurred more frequently within the same year.

My memories sometimes come via dreams, other times via visions. Visions happen at random instances, but sometimes its because I have asked. By asking, I mean, I have had instances where I will see something that jars a deep memory, but there is no memory to be found. Its as if the memory is hidden, but still can be sensed. I will ask my guides why I have the feeling of a memory and sometimes I am shown in the form of a vision. The visions can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. In all instances, these visions have been of a past life.

In one case, I just woke up one morning with the memory of a past life. I was only a child when this occurred. At the time, I had no idea where that memory came from. I knew where I was, the landscape of the region, the period in history, the people, and I knew the reasons why I was there. I was a special military diplomat, acting under strict guidelines of protocol. It was a very important job, with many hidden facets. I was working under the scrutiny of the local governor and ultimately the emperor of China. My research into that life, going through various history books and online articles have shown that my memory was accurate, despite having seen it when I was only a child.

On occasion, I have also had regressions done by various psychics, but these proved to be minor and inconclusive. I saw glimpses of a few lives, but without much information or feelings explaining what it was that I was viewing. In one case, I did a self regression, but it too was, although interesting, was no conclusive. I recognized the time period by the costumes to be somewhere around 1400 AD, but it could have been from a slight earlier period too. Interesting to see, but not very revealing.

That's pretty cute! It is most likely past life memory I'd say.

I think mine started after I was exposed to a very open and spiritual person. She worked at a coffee shop and I'd go there in the mornings and spout my dreams because they were weird. One time I had a dream about her and I told it to her and she was astounded and told me the dream meant something. After that encounter I started to notice little things and then had more interesting dreams that she was in more often.

Literally think she is a guide of some sort...

Like when I was younger I used to have war dreams all the time and now I think its just a PL trying to come through in little bits here and there. I distinctly remember one dream where I was watching hundreds and hundreds of soldiers marching and the sound was deafening. When I woke up I could still hear the marching.

What did the soldiers look like?

CoffeeCat, do you have any more memories of your possible PL coming through? Have you focused on it at all recently?

I started remembering at around 13 about the time that Schindler's List came out and they made us watch it in class. It was my first exposure to that time period/subject and I started having dreams after that and wrote about the time period for creative writing in English class which I think was a way to express memories.

I meditated trying to find my PLs. I tried and tried but I wasn't able to. I asked the universe to give me a glimpse of a really fun PL. The universe gave it to me in the form of a dream that I remember to this day.

I remembered mentioning 'deja-vu' feelings esp. those feelings for places I've never visited before from a very-young age.

I have strong long-term memory abilities, hence a growing interest in the possibilities of past-life memories associated with deja-vu; just before I discovered the 'Past Life Forum!'

I have started to experience memories a few months ago, without a specific trigger. It started with a very vivid dream, high in emotion. It left me startled, however I dismissed it as mere imagination. A few days later, I had another dream of the same sort. I came to have, during the day, quick "visions" with strong emotion, tied to my "dreams". I then considered reincarnation as a possibility and tried medication, too see if it would bring me anything. It worked, and I was able to see a few pre-deaths scenes, or meaningful moments of past incarnations, evoked in my dreams.

I was testing the idea of reincarnation in the process of sorting through various religious and spiritual traditions from around the world to discard any that didn't connect to reality for me.

I'd read about past life meditation and decided I would relax within my usual meditation environment one day (as I usually did to pray) only instead of introducing my own thoughts I would open my mind with a request to learn whether past lives are real. I figured that nothing would happen and I'd move on as usual with one less theory on the table.

What actually happened is I had an exceptionally vivid experience, full of unanticipated detail and emotion.

After sharing a couple meditations experiences with her, I discovered my best friend had dreamed a matching lifetime to one of mine long before she ever met me. That confirmation, combined with finding historical evidence of the tools I'd assumed were imaginary while researching the details convinced me that reincarnation is worth studying.

Most of my memories came to me in dreams, but some were also triggered by other things. I believe that all my struggles are linked to my past lives, but I still haven't figured out why I have an irrationel fear of getting drunk even though I barely have tasted alcohol. I'd rather avoid alcohol because I think it is wrong. I've never had a bad experience with alcohol so I don't understand where my thoughts about it come from. I think that is past life related, but I'm not sure.

My memories started a few months ago, through vivid dreams, high in emotion. At first I dismissed them as mere fragments of imagination, until I started to have quick "visions" tied to my dreams, that I just knew were past life related. I thought for a while that I had lost my mind, until I decided to research reincarnation, and I found many things...mainly that I wasn't as crazy as I had thought and that the were many other people that had similar experiences..

I've had just a couple of "memories", i.e. vague images of a life other than my own, for as long as I can remember. When I was little I even told my mother about them.

In addition to that, I have memories of seeing my parents at their wedding, and in the house they lived in before I was born.

More recently I did a past-life regression video on Youtube which called up some "memories" of a different life, and I'm still not sure if those are fact or fantasy. I am convinced of the other ones, though.
