My son is just about to turn four. His entire life we've called him an "old soul" as he's been seemingly wise beyond his years, acts very much like an adult (and prefers the company of adults), and somehow knows things that he just, well, shouldn't. He has been working with farming equipment since he was two years old, and can explain in layman's terms the inner-workings of an engine - something I certainly don't understand. I was very much the same way as a child (the old soul part, not so much the farming equipment
), so I just chalked it up to genetics until about a month ago.
Joshua started having nightmares. He told me that he was it was hot and dark and there were bombs and a lot of smoke. He became somewhat withdrawn, and didn't want to talk about it. I dropped it, didn't push him, and figured it would pass.
A few weeks ago he was getting dressed in his room, (standard every day attire for him, at his insistence, is camo pants and a white T-shirt and boots), and he put costume-jewelry dog-tags from last Halloween around his neck. Very excited, he came to me and said, "Mommy! This is just like what I used to wear in the war!" Then, almost nonchalanly, he took it from around his neck and tucked it into his left boot. I asked him why he was doing so. His reply was: "If my head gets blown off, this is how they'll be able to ID my body." To say I was speechless is an understatement. I didn't ask him any questions, I didn't want to push him or lead him in any way. He started talking about how he had been shot in the back (he pointed to the spot, and it's directly on one of his three birthmarks).
His nightmares were continuing, but he was more willing to describe them - "It was so hot, and the bombs were going off. We couldn't sleep... we were never safe..." At a relatives house one night, he went to use the bathroom. He called me in, his voice a bit panicked. "Mom! Is that shower curtain supposed to look like bamboo?" It did have a bamboo pattern on it. I acknowledged as much. I asked him why he was asking. "It reminds me of the jungle. I don't like it!"
Not all of his memories are scary, mind you. We were in my parents basement two weeks ago and he discovered a childs guitar that used to belong to my brother. He exclaimed, "Oh man, I haven't picked up a guitar in years!" (An outlandish statement considering the fact that he had never seen a guitar in real life - or at all, to my knowledge - never the less held one!) He picked it up, sat down, placed it on his lap, and held down a chord! (I actually have this on video - obviously not the first moment, which caught me off guard, but about five minutes later, after I made a mad dash for my camera!)
He has made a lot of statements in the past that have caught myself and friends and family off-guard... for instance: My cousin was in a car accident. She stopped over the house a few days after and she was talking about the girl who had hit her. Joshua said, very matter-of-fact "yeah, in that stupid Jeep of hers" almost out of ear-shot. Well it stopped my cousin mid-sentence. Unbeknownst even to me, the girl had indeed been driving a Jeep - there was simply no way for him to know that. I could go on about a million other things he has said and done that simply don't make sense... I don't know what, if anything, they have to do with past lives.
What concerns me right now is what he seems to be going through - it's almost as if he's suffering through some sort of - ugh this is going to sound nuts... post-trauma? Nightmares, night-sweats, anxiety, depression - and he's just a little boy. I want to help him but I just don't know how. All I can think to do is let him talk about it as much or as little as he wants/needs. Is there anything else I can do?? Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.
