Looking in the eyes

So, this is my second post on here, I'm trying really hard not to come off like a complete weirdo but I think this one might put me over the edge lol. Really trying to gauge what is my intuition, and what's just my weird self.

Has anyone ever been looking in the mirror and caught themselves looking back and genuinely been caught off guard/kind of freaked out by the reflection? It mostly happens when I’m doing my mascara and I catch my eyes, but I’ll get this overwhelming and really weird/eery feeling of “who the hell is that?!”

not sure if that’s just me - sometimes it really freaks me out. I’m not even sure if that’s a past life or my soul just confused.

Yeah, sometimes I’m like that. I’ve learned it comes with knowing that I’m looking at an ‘old me’ in a new body.

Like I wrote in my status on here... “We must be crazy” :P

I think it has nothing to do with re-incarnation issues. Rather it's like hearing your own voice recorded on an external device. It's not like the voice you hear when you speak - what you hear, is more what arrives to you via your skull bones than by the air. Therefore it's very different from what you hear coming out of a voice recorder.

Normally, you don't see yourself in the face when you interact with others, you only have a vague idea of what you may look like. So, when you look into a looking glass, you see a person you know very little by sight, much less than other persons around you. Practically, a stranger.

My Native American self kept his hair long and now I do as well. I was trying to wrangle mine once and when I caught myself in the mirror, I about dropped the brush. It was like I could see his face in mine for a second.

Mirrors kind of freak me out sometimes. Like viewing portals to some other dimension or something.

I was a male in most of my past lives, so being female now is new. I feel like when I get that good look in the mirror, and really tune in, something hits and it’s like “holy crap we’re a girl now?!”

I can see what you’re saying - that could be what’s happening. It just feels stronger than that. I look at myself in the mirror every morning to put my makeup on, and throughout the day to do touch ups.. so I’d like to think I have more than a vague idea of what I look like than to have that really strong feeling of “who is that?” When I’m looking back at myself. I can’t stress enough how freaked out I get - it’s like I’ve never seen the person before and they’ve taken over my body.

Sometimes I do that too lol. Every so often I have to remind myself that I'm not a burly 6'2" man anymore

Hi Alex,

This is one where I have to disagree with Cyrus. I was planning to use his analogy to our own voice in the opposite way (but his post got here first ;)). No problem with that, but my response to the situation is just the opposite. The reason we react to hearing a recording of our own voice is that we are used to hearing the distorted version via our own ears and bone conduction. So, the actual recording sounds strange by contrast. However, we do not "see" ourselves unless we look into a mirror or the like. So, we have nothing to compare it with but the reflections of our self we have seen in the past. And yet it can still look strange. o_O I had this reaction most during growing up years. Then it passed until recently, but that is only because the old coot I see in the mirror does not look like the adult "me" fixed in my memory at this point (which I think I should still look like after a lifetime).

Anyhow, I think there is merit to your observation.

I definitely see what you're saying, I feel that way! almost like my soul hasn't quite caught up yet. I'm still learning and getting used to everything - unlike so many people here, I don't have any clear memories and haven't done a regression yet. so I'm only just starting to really sit with these feelings and working through what my intuition is serving me - it's interesting but I have a lot of self work to do for sure :) you're all teaching me so much though!

My wise, wise friends!

Hi Alex,

Not everyone here has clear memories. For many, there is a lot of intuition, some fuzzy memories of actual "stuff" that are blurry enough to make us wonder if they are merely imagination, and a lot of pre-existing hang-ups, characteristics, phobias, etc. that don't seem to have any other explanation. So, don't be self-conscious on that account.

However, I'm really writing because I forgot to comment on something that caught my eye in your prior post: Your reaction to your own reflection! I liked the exclamation. (I've felt that way myself sometimes). I also identified with the use of "we're" in that context. Sometimes it can feel like that--as if there are a lot of different personas "down there" deep inside. I sometimes feel more like a "committee" than a monad. Mostly they stay quiet, like books on a shelf. But other times . . . .

I've had body dysmorphia most of my whole life. Its taken me most if my 45 years to realize I'm not a girl.. So I wouldn't worry about it lol.

Do you know anything about your most recent past life? I kinda died young and tragic, but I mostly identify with being a girl anyway so I've always seen someone else in the mirror.

When I first saw pics of the woman who's memories I have ( at that time still skeptic about reincarnation ) I at once saw the "faults" and did not wish to see the photographs. And this girl was considered pretty, modeling this, modeling that. I was the other way around when seeing pics of her loved ones. When I first saw a video of her I cringed and almost started to bite my nails, and wished to look another way. I would also have memories of people trying to convince her to go out on a stage and no one understanding how nerve wrecking this was to her, and she finally had to do it. Then years and years later I was able to get her own words and others on the matter and they all said the same thing. She did not wish to see photos of herself, she never watched a video/film footage of herself and her stage fright had been real too. When she could focus on someone else, because she really enjoyed people, she was better off and her pulse went down a little. When she lived in the 60's or so I remember that she had heavy make up on the eyes and that some men she knew instinctively, impulsively would almost start yelling at her because of it at different times. I don't know if I am way off here, but it was as if they viewed it as if she had a sign that said "I'm bad" or something, and she did not understand their "old" reactions because this was in fashion in those days, and she thought it looked nice, so I do remember that moment in the mirror when doing this make up, knowing someone out there would either say something or just have a look in his eyes that said something. I did find the words of someone telling himself that he bluntly told her to go into the bathroom and clean her face off the make up. Overall even if she was considered pretty when she looked in the mirror she saw the faults and also the feeling you have described. That surreality kind of thing, I can get it too. She liked the make up because it could change things for her, and she liked the artistic change one could do with various looks. Someone in her past who was a very good boyfriend and someone who would not tell her to go and change for instance ( she liked to have pants instead of dresses on which some found provoking, actually, it was not allowed everywhere ) saw her putting on make up in a mirror. I remember him telling her that she does not need it, that she was beautiful just the way she was, and she would go and do her little rabbit look at once ( which said yeah right ), a gesture with her nose, to tease, but also her way of saying butt off, and he would make a funny look of himself too, then have his little stomach laugh/giggle and give her a quick kiss on the head.

Hi Jaimie,

Back in those long ago days, good girls were not supposed to look like "street walkers" = prostitutes " (who were known or reputed to wear very heavy make-up, very short skirts, etc. etc.--i.e., highly sexualized in appearance). So, it was not that unusual for a teen-aged daughter who was going out to be told to "take off some of that make-up" or to put on a longer skirt, etc. Actually, it is still not unusual for parents to express disapproval of what their daughters are wearing out. Also, when I was growing up females wore dresses for almost everything--school, church, going out, etc. About the only time you saw them in slacks or shorts was for very casual or purely recreational activities. Clothing for males was also a lot more formal. Everything is a LOT more casual now. I even had a guy come to church on Sunday barefoot! o_O He's usually in shorts and sandals, but this was a new shift towards even more casual. I do live in Florida, but even for Florida this is not the norm. (BTW--males wore suits and ties to church when I was growing up, and females wore dresses, hats and gloves). Things have changed a lot since the 50s and 60s! ;)

PS--The guy I'm talking about is a married man, a PhD in accounting, a professor at University, and a "pillar" of the church. :D

the only thing I really know about my most recent past life was that I was a geek male that sold books in a market in the 60s! But, and I know I sound repetitive lol, I feel like that has something to do with it. I don’t think I’ve been female in any of my past lives - at least it doesn’t feel that way. Emotionally I feel - and I don’t mean this any particular way or to cause offense - but very masculine. When I found out I was a male in my past lives I wasn’t surprised. But when I catch myself in the mirror I think maybe my soul is caught off guard.

I’m sorry about your tragic ending - It sounds like you’ve had a rough go of it :(

Haha yes, I think of my physical self and my soul as two separate beings - I guess because I read Journey of Souls by Michael Newton and that’s how I kind of understood it. Like two entities working together to be one (sometimes) well oiled machine. I’m not sure if that’s weird - but “we” already put ourselves out there with the thread so might as well go all in!

thanks :) I’m definitely envious of those who remember and get visions and such, but my time will come. Until then, I’m on a really great path with all of you here and I’m learning so much and taking part in a really great community.

I had a rough childhood.. won't lie lol. I've come to accept that you just are who you are. I've been male when I've needed to be and it's been fine with me, I'm just always going to be a girl on the inside.

I know the sensation you're talking about. I've experienced it many times though. It's like deja vu kind of thing. You're remembering something you don't remember, consciously. I've learned to use the feeling to recognize what a past life, um.. connection is. I've had the same feeling looking at other things before too. The one I recall right now is a planter stand that my mom's friend had on a porch. I actually was able to find a nearly identical one in photos of my old house from that life.

But in terms of your face, I had that feeling yesterday. I was bored and started taking selfies and when I was flipping through them, I found one and for a second, I couldn't recognize my own face. It was just because my expression, the angle and all of that, just reminded me of my face in my last life.

The feeling of past life recall like that can be disorientating. I've always said it feels like walking down the stairs and at the bottom, expect there to be another step and there isn't. There's that weird feeling as your body has to readjust itself to reality, when you had a different version in your head. It's trippy.. lol.

Why do you apologize for feeling masculine? We're all just who we are.. we all cant' be the same. No offense taken! Don't be sorry.

Sorry for jumping in like this, but I am intrigued by this conversation. Just wanna say that the only trouble I have regarding male and female attitudes is that people reacted both in my past life as well in my present that I would have male friends, close friends, when I was female, but for me to fall in love is such a rare condition, both then as well as now, that I could not phantom what they were talking about. And we many times found ourselves trying to make up acceptable reasons why we were friends, like he would say "She's like my sister" or "We're from before, you know, from when we were kids". Most of my experienced past lives I have been female, don't know why, but have also experienced being male and for the short time these experiences lasted I seem to have enjoyed, felt home, being a boy and man, as well. I think when we do get reminded of who we are this time around in terms of a look in the mirror it may work as a limitation, a reminder that oh,yes that's who I am now. But at some stage we now we are more. And have been different in the past. It must be a terrible feeling though if one feels trapped within their own body, that they got the wrong one, that it's not theirs. Foremost I believe too that we as spirits don't have genders, that we are both female and male and we're all and nothing, really, we're consciousness. OK, sorry, gonna butt out now ;)

there's really no such thing as male and female.. if we look at it all like personality traits that are labeled either masculine and feminine, it's all really a spectrum and even then you can't point at one exact point and say that's me. We are all many different people in one. I think our true selves, that we know to be true that we don't often show other people, exist as a single "home" point on that spectrum. Sure me, I'm "female". But you stick a gun in my hand and I'm way up in the "male" part. Around my son, I may be both, depending on the situation.

This is normal.. we all have "uniforms" that we wear as the situation calls for it. It's just a part of belonging to many and different functions of our lives and cultures. I like the word uniform better than mask. Mask implies we're concealing something, while uniform implies that we're bringing out the best and most appropriate part of us for the task at hand. But even though, we still maintain a "home" point on the spectrum.

I feel "trapped" only because I died at 39 and left a lot in my life unaccomplished. I chose to be male in this life to help my ex wife as her husband (a lot of good that did lol), so i don't feel trapped. I should have been female again to recover from my last life.

You can put the girl in the guy, but you can't take the girl out of the girl I guess lol. I find that I still flip my head to get non existent hair our of my face or off my shoulder. My old boss that I'm still good friends with used to call me her best girl friend. She would comment that I move too naturally like a girl for a guy and once even told me I must have been a woman in a past life. Well duh! lol.

Landsend and Tortoro, I think it is because you have wonderful souls, that is how I experience you both.

Hi Totoro,

I'm a believer in ultimate gender--i.e., that as souls/spirits we do have innate gender (which ain't always the same as our biological sex). This doesn't mean that we aren't versatile and capable of playing a variety of roles (including that of the opposite sex). BTW--I like what you said about being able to draw out opposite gender characteristics when needed. I think that versatility in this area as well as others is one of the characteristics of advanced souls/spirits. Anyhow, in my ongoing searching I decided to delve a bit more into Christian Hermeticism lately, which has been around since early in the Christian era and was revived in popularity during the Renaissance. Interestingly, of the 7 basic tenets of Hermeticism, one is devoted to gender. These tenets purport to state universal laws/characteristics applicable to the natural universe. I.e., they may not reach or be applicable to the unknowable unmanifest divine, but apply pretty much everywhere else. I thought this was interesting. Anyhow, here is a summary of this principle from the Kybalion, which is considered to be a good modern summary of Hermetic principles though it is already more than a century old:

"7. The Principle of Gender

"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine
and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all
planes."--The Kybalion.

This Principle embodies the truth that there is GENDER manifested in everything--the Masculine and Feminine Principles ever at work. This is true not only of the Physical Plane, but of the Mental and even the Spiritual Planes. On the Physical Plane, the Principle manifests as SEX, on the higher planes it takes higher forms, but the Principle is ever the same. No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible without this Principle. An understanding of its laws will throw light on many a subject that has perplexed the minds of men. The Principle of Gender works ever in the direction of generation, regeneration, and creation. Everything, and every person, contains the two Elements or Principles, or this great Principle, within it, him or her. Every Male thing has the Female Element also; every Female contains also the Male Principle. If you would understand the philosophy of Mental and Spiritual Creation, Generation, and Re-generation, you must understand and study this Hermetic Principle. It contains the solution of many mysteries of Life. . . . ."

PS--This seems to correspond with the Yin/Yang symbol with a dot of Yin in the Yang and vice versa.

Very interesting, Sea and Sky. Could this be why then the research has shown that one is more often reborn as let's say a boy more often than a girl ? It has puzzled me why most my experienced past lives are as female and so few of being male, but the way you describe it make more sense of it, even if I have felt without gender and being just consciousness as a ghost.

Hi Jaimie,

That is what it looks like to me. There have been many discussions/debates on this issue during the time I have been here. Initially, I seemed to represent the minority opinion (and also seemed to be the only one taking this position). However, I have noticed a shift over time.

As noted in the quote above, "gender" manifests in different ways at different levels. E.g., even without a body there can still be very distinctive "gendered" differences in the way each gender thinks, emotes, sees and deals with things, etc.

S&S, when I started reading your previous post, I the first thing I thought of was the ying yang diagram and you mentioned it in the end! How funny.. I agree with you on that.

You could maybe even extend the thinking to say that we all have left and right brain attributes. For a more incarnate description. We all have base personality but we can also respond to things in a "left" or "right" brained fashion.

Hi Totoro,

Agreed in terms of R/L brain characteristics. Also, I was thinking of the Jungian model of the psyche, where the male must tap into the female aspects in the subconscious (the anima) as part of individuation and creativity. The female must likewise tap into the male aspects in the subconscious (the animus) as part of individuation and creativity.
