Movie about a Chinese emperor

Many years ago I saw a movie about a Chinese Emperor. At one part there was a scene that had this weird effect on me, I got almost paralyzed and it just seemed so familar.
You see a corridor with doors that lead to rooms with his mistresses. In front of each room there is a round huge orange lamp. The lamp in front of the room the emperor went into would continue to have the light lit, but the others would become dark. Something about this seemed familiar, I don't know what exact part, maybe I was the person who tended the lamps, or one of the mistresses.
But does anyone know what movie this is? I also remember that one of the girls gets executed because she was speaking to the gardener or something. Also that part trigged something

wow, I don't know, that doesn't sound familiar. There's literally tons of period dramas. Do you remember where you saw it? Maybe they have a site (a tv channel or something) and you can look it up?

Keep in mind though, that if it was in a movie it may have been a made up scenario. Or even perhaps it could have been a Korean, Vietnamese or Japanese film?

I only say that because the standard practice with the Emperors in China for many years is that the wife was brought to him. They typically lived on their own in their own houses and then were sent for.

Are you thinking about the "Last Emperor"? If it's not that one, try searching on the internet. You might also try the yahoo group on this subject. Someone there may know.

Raise the Red Lantern isn't a film about an emperor but a film about a wealthy man with his mistresses.

Chinese emperors had one wife and many concubines - hundreds of them. Some of them would produce sons therefore would make those concubines the "preferred" depending on the wife's ability to produce a son. Or if the emperor preferred a concubine over a wife then that would be his choice for a while. He would just rotate them depending what he wanted for his flavor of the day.

Chinese emperors / royalty were ruthless back in the day and many were killed at their whim.

Also, the movie "The Last Emperor" was about PuYi , supposedly Totoro would know more about the subject since his claims of being an incarnate of somebody related to PuYi.

I knew it wasn't the last emperor, which is why I didn't suggest it.

But yes I know a lot about that time period, if i can be of any help, please feel free to let me know!
