As to the coal in the lips, again, it also sounds pretty 'old'.
I thought I read somewhere that it wasn't until the 1700s that it was discovered coal could be burned for heat. At one time scientists or "experts" said there was "no such thing" as rocks that burned. Once it was proven to be true this discovery launched the Industrial Revolution in England as coal was mined to be used in the new British steam engines to power the factories. The first steam engines powered pumps that pumped water out of coal and tin mines in England.

This doesn't sound like a death ritual to me. It sounds like a primitive "is he alive" test, much like people used to hold a mirror under the nostrils of a putative corpse to determine if there was any respiration--even though very shallow and otherwise indetectable. (There used to be quite a problem with burying people who were in deep comas--in fact, some coffins were rigged with bells that the "deceased" could ring if they suddenly "woke up" after being buried--a very scary thought).
There are many reports of coffins being exhumed for various reasons and it was discovered the person "woke up" and were so frustrated that no one could hear them they pulled their hair out in clumps. I suspect this would lead to claustrophobia in future lives.

I'm new to the forum, though I admit to lurking and reading many of the posts over the last couple of days. I'm also a skeptic but curious and open minded enough to have ended up here, so...

Ok.

I went to a group past life regression many years ago (1986) and it was truly fascinating and actually explained a couple things to me (why I have a difficult time being close to my dad, and why I have always insisted on having a closed coffin when I die). I'm not really convinced it was a past life as it was sort of a 'let's check this out' for entertainment value, but it certainly seemed real at the time, and I still recall the regression and the details of the 'memories' vividly.

Anyway, the reason for this post - when I was a young child I had a recurring dream where I was walking along railroad tracks with a man who was my father. It was a dreary day, cold and gray and there was just a heaviness to it. We were dressed in old clothes but in retrospect they must have been good quality because they weren't overly tattered. The man was wearing an overcoat and hat and was stern. I was maybe 4 or 5 in the dream and I was wearing a dress, coat and hat. It seemed to be the 1940s.

The father and I did not speak to one another, but I knew we were looking for my mother. There were a number of body parts along the tracks - an arm here, a leg there - but it did not seem out of the ordinary to me, and in fact wasn't shocking or scary at all, even as a young child. And the dream didn't scare me in real life, just perplexed me really... We walked for a long time along the tracks. There were fields around us, and at the end of the tracks was a brick building which I knew was where the tracks would eventually end.

I've always remembered this dream and whenever I had it, it was always exactly the same.

Fast forward many many years (I'm now 52) and a friend, posted a photo to facebook that I recognized immediately as the brick building of my dream! I quickly messaged her and asked her what the building was.

It was the station from Auschwitz. I got physically ill.

I've not had any recollections or memories of anything from that time, or from any time really (my dreams are normally absurd) so I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to sort of coax the memories?

I have been to a hypnotist twice (once for the only past life regression I've ever done, and once just to shake the terrible sadness that I was carrying around after the death of someone dear to me).

Anywho..... any suggestions or advice? Could the dream been a past life thing? I've always been enamored of Germany but figured that was because of my heritage; yet in studying WWII in high school I refused to watch the films of the concentration camps. I've been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and was overcome with emotion and horror (but so is everyone else if they have a heart) Or could it have just been spurred from something I saw on television as a child?

Welcome, GunsmokeGertie. Sounds like a past life dream to me.

Mere Dreamer, what you are describing is actually an earth oven. Cold storage would not be placed so close to the fire.

Ancient people would wrap the meat in skins and put it in the hole along with rocks heated in the fire and green-stuff for moisture and flavor. Then, the hole was covered over, and left to bake from a few hours to a whole day.

Welcome to the forum. As I started reading your post I thought of Auschwitz. This sounds like a past life memory. You have already done one successful past life regression. Have you tried doing a self-regression? There are CDs, DVDs, and videos available, including YouTube. Many people have reported success with the Brian Weiss video on YouTube.

Oh! Now that's interesting. It was really close to the fire, and I partially woke up, so I was observing from two perspectives at that point. I wonder if I could go back in and see if there were hot rocks in the hole.... I've been able to re-experience old dreams a few times. We'll see.

SeaAndSky, I think the point about a coal being quite useful to see if someone is breathing is good, also. It makes sense in that situation.

Argonne, it's not "coal-rock" but a hot coal from the fire.

Hi Mere,

I was actually thinking of it more as a pain test than a breathing test--i.e., the lips are very sensitive. If you put a hot coal on them, it is going to hurt like &^%$# and will be likely to rouse most folks (though not all probably).

It's a bit like the "smelling salts" the Victorians held under people's noses for this purpose. If the subject doesn't react, he or she is really and truly dead (or so deep in a coma that a primitive society is unlikely to be able to help them).

Hi GunsmokeGertie

Welcome to the forum. Yep. Sounds like a past life memory to me. This kind of emotional reaction is usually a pretty strong clue.

PL Memory snippets...

This is information from a meditation I did with a CD purchased for the purpose of "recovering" PL info...

I was on stage...I could see the lights along the edge of the stage, like lamps, shining toward me. I was dancing, and singing, and floating some sort of scarf (maybe more than one) about around myself "artistically" (that was the intention I got). I had just completed the performance and as the audience applauded I bowed, breathing a little hard from the strenuous performance and also feeling a great joy that it had gone well and the audience was approving. [i can't sing or dance in this life although as a child I REALLY wanted to do both].

Then, suddenly, I am outside the "theater" - felt like some Metropolis, like NY or maybe Chicago although I felt NY -- but I also thought of Paris (don't know why). It is night. I am wearing 1920s style clothing...a cloche hat and a stylish coat with fur trim. I am greeted by two men in dark suits and hats (I think I am carrying a bouquet of roses given to me by one of them). I feel close to both men. We get into a car (back seat), excitedly talking, and light up cigarettes (I have never smoked in this life).

Next, I see a snippet of myself at a (grand?) piano playing music at some sort of social gathering (like in the old musical movies) -- it seems like a natural thing to be doing, not like I was hired to do it or anything. Also can't tell the size of the gathering but the feeling is it is a close intimate group. The room we are in is very posh feeling. When I am "her" I feel that I am used to going between NY and Paris.

I've tried to figure out who or what on earth this was. At first I though I "made it up". But doing some research I see that quite a few performers went between NYC and Paris, and that the clothing I saw is a good match to US during the mid twenties. But it doesn't seem that a lot of performers both sang and danced. Also, need to have died before my birth in 1952. ???

Anyway -- keeps me wondering.

Another thing I meant to mention is that even though in this life I don't seem to be able to sing or dance, when I was very young I constantly dressed myself up in gauzy, or filmy fabrics that "floated" when I moved. I even tied scarves around my waist so that they would give me that same feeling.

And I tried hard as I could to sing in a soprano voice. But it wouldn't come out the way I thought it should.

But several years ago at a spiritual retreat I participated in a "trance dance" ritual........although I have no specific recall of what happened after I took my first step, I was told by all who watched that I danced like a professional dancer! More wondering.......

I have a large birthmark...

I was born 9/24/57 with a small birthmark at the corner of the left side of my mouth. As I grew older, it became a large red Port Wine Stain. As an adult, I had two rounds of laser surgery which only removed 80% (would have been more had my son not pulled the scab off). I still have the shadow of my birthmark.

Growing up, I always felt different around kids my age, close to my parents and older relatives. I had—and have- very few female friends; I get on with men very well. AS FRIENDS. There was a phase in my life when I made friends in a neighboring town, and was invited to visit them. I found their homes with no directions, and had never been there before.

Mom always blamed herself for my birthmark, saying she was watching her weight while she was pregnant, and didn’t eat everything she was offered.

My relationships with agemate females were usually very strained, and they always were jealous and/or unkind to me. I cannot tolerate their drama. They find me too logical and not “catty”.

My Dad’s grandmom died about 4 yrs before I was born. I had a brother stillborn 1 yr 6 days before I was born.

Do you think I have an “afterlife” birthmark, or related issues?

Interesting story kmckuin.

It would be interesting if you could find out who you were. It might or might not be possible, depending how much of a mark you made in the day I guess.

A lot of people think that singers and dancers just 'do it' and don't realise the years and years of training that goes into it! Well, that's the illusion they are often trying for I guess - making it look effortless and natural.

But, that said, no doubt, if you had some lessons, you would find that you picked it up very easily again. People have written here about picking up a language or an instrument they 'used to' know very quickly, but they still needed a few lessons. It seems to be the same with other past life skills.

Hi trishalynne

Welcome to the forum.

Everyone has an afterlife and 'related issues'. These feelings you talk about could be connected. Birthmarks are sometimes in the same place as a previous life injury.

There was a phase in my life when I made friends in a neighboring town, and was invited to visit them. I found their homes with no directions, and had never been there before.
It's possible you knew this town well? Did the people themselves feel 'familiar' to you, or was it just the town?

Have you had a look in the FAQs? There is a lot of information in there about how to find out more about past lives.

It could be past life related. The other things you described also sound very much past life related. Do you ever have dreams or flashbacks that could be past life? Have you tried doing a past life regression? I think the Port Wine birthmark may be connected with how you died in a past life. You might try starting a journal. Write down your childhood likes and dislikes, phobias, hobbies, abilities, etc. See if there is a pattern. How much do you know about your deceased relatives like great grandparents, grandparents, etc. Welcome to the forum. :)

PL Memory snippets...1920s singer-dancer?

Tanguerra, thanks for your suggestion. I actually have attempted to do some research on who this person I envisioned might have been. Haven't had much luck except to see that the 1920s were a time of real breakthroughs for women, and thus the "flapper girl" was a common representation. Many women performed in vaudeville (which prior to my research I actually equated with burlesque!) and became quite successful --- even though they had a hectic life of repeating their acts night after night, and traveling from theater to theater, some even traveled to Paris to perform. Some even went into the silent movies and radio.

But it has been some years since I had the memories, and though I think I had dark hair, as did the men with me, I am not absolutely certain now. There are some ladies from the time who resemble me (or I think they do) and then some who look very different (and aren't they supposed to be similar looking?) so it all remains a great mystery.

In this life I actually tried to have the opportunity to sing (signed up for chorus, choir, etc.) and never made the cut. My kids share that they noticed how much I love to sing (whenever I thought I was alone I would really belt out the melodies)-- but they also share that they never loved hearing me do so. Seems that the "voice" did not follow if that was a real PL memory.

And I have tried to learn to dance -- line dance, etc. and it's as if there is a "block" to prevent this (is that possible I wonder) -- I really cannot get the hang of dancing in unison with others! I gave up trying those gym classes where they all do the same routine for the same reason.

Maybe you were slaves?

Towards the end of the Roman Empire there were a lot of slave uprisings and a lot of religious sects also springing up here and there (Christianity being just one of them).

There could be all sorts of reasons why you could run afoul of the authorities. It didn't take much to get into trouble back then! I think Christianity became the official religion of Rome about 320 A.D. or so. I do know once they decided to embrace it, they clamped down pretty hard on any kind of 'heresy' which was anything they didn't agree with basically. So all that business about 'witchery' and 'special powers' might not be as far fetched as you think. The Roman Empire had people in it from all over the known world, and with them came all kinds of religious practices. So, it's possible you came from some country, like say England, that had certain 'paganistic' practices that would have been considered magical and/or heretical.

Have you ever tried doing a regression to see if you can get more info?

Has everyone heard that ISIS burned that Jordanian pilot alive? (may he rest in peace). I accidently stumbled on some still photos taken from a video showing the guy in a cage with fire coming up around him. Wish I hadn't. The emotional reaction I got was out of control. Felt like I got kicked in the stomach. I had fear, anger and sadness all going around in me, more than there should have been. The emotions became overwhelming and I had to keep telling myself, "You're ok, you're safe, nothing happening to you." Finally, the emotional storm started to die down. Wow. Did not expect that. Wonder if I had a past life that died in a similar fashion?

With that kind of reaction I would say probably YES. :(

Wow, this is some interesting information, I had no idea about the religious sects and the paganistic practices... I thought this part of my dream was way too unrealistic...

I haven't tried a regression or self-regression so far, as I never have any time to myself to just sit down and relax for a while, LOL. But I hope that someday I will finally manage to at least do a self-regression using videos, as I've been wanting to try it, and I'm very curious about this method.

Thank you Tanguerra for the link to this article!

Yes. You'd be surprised some of the stuff that people have remembered that first seems pretty far fetched, but then checks out with the historical facts.

I found this to be very true. I had a life in Northern China between 750 and 800 AD. The memory came to me while I slept and when I awoke the next morning, that memory, of my life, was there like a story book. I was a between 8 and 10 years old at the time, but the story never altered throughout my life so I decided to start researching it, first online and then buying books on the Tang Dynasty. My life, in that period, the job I was performing for the Emperor of China, was very specific. It took a bit of research but I uncovered most of it and found that it was true. What I saw and did, as a job, was correct, according to the various history books I have read. The details are eerily similar and very unique.

My Traffic

My flashbacks seem to come when I'm waking up, the so called "Hypnagogia" phase, almost like "Lucid Dreaming" this seems to be the right time for my Spirit Guides to get through to me with a message or a glimpse at a Past Life (known as a PL).

Or as I strongly suspect, the vast majority of the traffic between myself and my Guides takes place while I am projecting on the Astral Plane, just my opinion, is all. :)

As I said, it takes practice. Nobody just 'knows' how to dance without having at least a few lessons. A lot of people assume that it is innate, but it isn't. I had lots of dance lessons when I was a child and was a dancer (of sorts) in my most recent life, but even I take a little while to pick up a new routine.

I'd completely forgotten, until I read this thread, that I "know" Knaresborough and Harrogate (in England).

When I went there for a weekend away some years back now (having never been there before) I knew my way round Knaresborough and I recognised a street in Harrogate as one that I had had dreams about several times and knew what I was going to see next.

I should have remembered that long before now shouldn't I? Well, now that I have remembered that, then I shall use the wonders of modern technology to have another look again (what is now quite a few years later) courtesy of having a "virtual walk-around" those places on Googlemaps Street View.

Maybe it'll all look very different to me and different "on screen" to in person - as it was over 20 years ago this happened...coffee

I had an odd dream last night and woke up with a lot of specific details instead of losing it all as usual.

A key element was this woman I was visiting in the dream who I knew as an acquaintance in this life even though she looked completely different slim with sleek short hair curled on her cheeks. (She also had a different husband.)

She wanted to give me a gift, and brought out what looked like a toy stove with a little roof over it. I was trying to think how to explain I didn't have any children. She then told me it was perfect for keeping food warm for hours, because it would maintain the heat at 88 degrees, which would keep it safe to eat as well. I found that intriguing in the dream, and was trying to figure out how to pack it for travel. I woke up as she showed me that it would collapse down into a neat box.

Earlier she introduced me to her tall, blonde husband and asked if I could help with a nagging question he had about some work or idea of his that she couldn't help with. He then asked me how I got by socially when I would so easily forget people's names, because he assumed anyone would feel resentful for such obvious neglect. He was very direct, almost rude, except I got the impression that he knew I'd take it as research on an important topic that wouldn't offend me.

I took on the role of an adviser, explaining that even if I forgot their names I would remember their lives and stories and if I mentioned a topic they had discussed before by asking if they were the one with whom I had talked about it they would quickly remind me of their name and remain quite happy about how I had remembered such details about them.

He seemed interested in the techniques and mentioned to my friend that they both remembered names quite well, but that it still might be worthwhile to focus more on people's conversations.

All very interesting. Once again it felt rather upper-class.

The reason this isn't relegated to a mere dream is that it turns out 88 degrees Celsius is actually well within the safe zone for keeping food warm over time. I had no idea. I never think in Celcius, either.

Celcius used to be called Centigrade and is part of the metric system of weights and measure. The metric system was invented in France. I think it was invented after the French Revolution. Most European countries have been using the Metric system for more than 150 years, except for the British. The English speaking countries switched to Metric in the 1970's. The U.S. was supposed to switch also, but that was stopped after the 1980 election.

France? oooh. That's interesting. That's definitely a theme. Hmm.

I had typed centigrade into the search until it auto-corrected me to Celsius. I wonder if I heard that term when I was a kid.

About 1968 there was an international conference dealing with scientific stuff. One of the things they did was rename several units of measurement after the people who were strongly connected with the research. Temperature term "Centigrade" was renamed Celsius. "Cycle" term for frequency was renamed Hertz. If you run across electrical or electronic equipment made before 1968 it will say "xx cycles", "xx kilocycles", or "xx megacycles" instead of "xx hertz".
