Serious Questions

Hello! My name is Heike and I'm new here, although I have lots of experience on other forums and know how to behave. In fact, I'm going to leave out details on some of my questions in order to stay on the "good" side of your forum rules, but if you want more detail and it's ok to provide it, please ask.

I'm not exactly religious or even spiritual, although I do try to live my life according to principles such as not hurting other people except in self-defense and not judging people because I don't like to be judged.

I've read about 3 or 4 dozen of the threads here, and all of them on the list of "cases of interest." Reincarnation and past lives have been one of my interests since my teenage years; I think the case that introduced me to the concept was that of Bridey Murphy.

I've had some concerns and questions which have puzzled me for many years but have seldom expressed them to anyone. I am hoping this will be a safe place to do that and get some ideas if not answers.

1. My mother never wanted a child, attempted to get rid of me before I was born, and abused me throughout my childhood. My father was a sociopath and an alcoholic who also abused me during the short time before my mother left him. What I can't understand is why in the world I would have chosen to be born into such circumstances. Although I am highly intelligent and talented in many ways, my life has been one long succession of failures due to being emotionally crippled by my childhood. I have trouble with the idea that I would have chosen this for myself, unless I had some terrible deeds in a past life to atone for, which idea in and of itself also makes me uncomfortable. As a very young child I was very mature and precocious. My stepfather met me when I was 3 years old and described me as "3 going on 30." I have not, however, been told of any unusual dreams or odd things I expressed as a child, nor do I remember anything like that. All of my life I have abhorred violence and feared the anger of others, to the point of being what many would call a coward. I avoid confrontation and run if threatened or attacked.

2. In recent years I've been a caretaker for two women with developmental disabilities. One suffered from Angelman Syndrome, and although physically in her late 20's she was functionally an infant. She could not speak or communicate in any way, could barely feed herself, and was total care. How could a soul choose such a life, and what could possibly be learned from it? Is there a conscious, aware soul trapped inside that non-functional mind? If so, I can not imagine a worse fate for anyone. If not, then it makes no sense to me. Could there be such a thing as a person without a soul or spirit, an empty shell which functions only physically? That would be a great relief to me over thinking that a functional, aware mind is trapped in a prison of mental incapacity for life.

My other client has Cohen Syndrome and is stuck at the mental and emotional age of around 4 or 5. She can communicate but is much like a child who can not grow up. Abstract concepts are beyond her and she can't (or won't) even learn to read. She has never known love or friendship and never will. Her parents placed her into an institution shortly after her condition became apparent, and every other person in her life (except her brother who is disabled just like her) has been and is a person who is paid to take care of her. Her only pleasure in life is eating, and she doesn't get to enjoy that much because she's diabetic, tends to obesity, and is kept on a pretty strict diet by her doctor and team. Once again what puzzles me is how or why a soul could have chosen such a life and what could possibly be learned from it. She has never "achieved" anything and never will, and her life is as joyless as any I could imagine.

Hi Heike

Welcome to the forum.

Nobody really knows the answers to these questions, but there are a lot of different theories and opinions.

From what we read of the 'life between life' experience, it seems that most (but by no means all) people are offered a choice of several different lives (usually between 3 - 6 or so) they might like to try out, based on what bodies are available at the time, what their 'soul group' is up to, what their expressed wishes were in the previous life, and so on. The individual expresses a preference and 'voila!' they are born into their new life. There does not appear to be any compulsion in particular involved in this. It seems to be something that individuals choose more or less for themselves, with the help and advice of 'guides' who seem to run things in 'heaven'.

Some people report that they don't remember making any choices at all, but just found themselves tumbling down a 'tunnel of light', towards 'Earth' then got born with very little rigmarole. So, this could either mean that they don't remember it, or that not everybody makes a carefully considered choice.

Now, people's motivations when they are in the 'between life' state might be a bit opaque if you don't remember what went before, which is the norm. Sure, probably nobody really wishes to suffer, or have bad parents, or have a disability, but it happens all the same. There is a lot of suffering in the world, most of it caused by the actions of other humans as well as the accidental workings of 'fate'. Things might be a lot more random than we'd like to think. Maybe things just happen by accident and there is no 'why' and there is no grand plan and God (however you conceive her) is not doing things to people, but people are doing it to themselves?

Some people have written in here about having suffered in one life, or seen their friends suffer, then the next life became a doctor so they could do something about it. Others have talked about having abusive parents in their present life, but making darn sure that their own children were cared for properly so that the cycle would be broken.

We cannot see the past or the future perfectly. Some of us get occasional glimpses and try to make sense of it as best we can.

Dear Tanguerra,

Thank you for your reply. I have broken the abuse cycle in my own way - I've never had any children. Partly that was by choice and partly it was due to a hysterectomy in my 20's.

It has occurred to me that peoples' lives are often interconnected. On April 6, 2013, my husband of 17 years unexpectedly passed away. For quite a while afterwards I was very angry about that happening to me, but then somewhere during the grief process it occurred to me that it didn't actually happen "to me," it happened to him! Now I have made more progress and realize that it happened to both of us. There were perhaps reasons he needed to go, and perhaps lessons I needed to learn from the loss.

So, perhaps in order for people to learn lessons and have experiences they need to have, sometimes others "volunteer" or agree to be the one who is disadvantaged or suffers to provide those lessons. Kind of like volunteering to be the drowning person for a lifeguard to practice on, only with a lot more commitment involved. ;)

Certainly both of my clients, and other people I have cared for and helped (I was a houseparent at two different boys' homes), have led me to a great deal of soul-searching and deep thinking I might not otherwise have engaged in, taught me many life lessons, and affected the way I treat others as well as the way I treat myself.

Often I have thought reincarnation was something I just wanted to believe in because it offers the hope of a better and happier life "next time around." I'm 57 now and this life is pretty much trashed. The experiences I've read here have been enlightening and helpful. Maybe death is not the end, and maybe there will be another chance for me in another life. The children whose stories I've read here are certainly evidence in favor of that hope being reality.

PS I'm a German immigrant and although I was brought to America at the age of 3 1/2, I know quite a bit about the history and experiences of my family in Germany from 1930 or so to the mid 50's. If anyone has any questions about what life was like then and there, I may be able to help.

Hello Heike, welcome to the forum. First of all, i'm sorry to hear that you suffered at the hands of your parents, unfortunately, too many of us can relate to that, and I totally agree with you, why would you choose to be born into a life of suffering? As tanguerra said, I don't think there is a satisfactory answer to that question because as physical beings we tend to look at things from a 'two dimensional' perspective where for the majority of us, health, happiness, peace and love are among the most important values that we hold for ourselves and others. So why don't we all choose perfect lives without any pain or suffering?

From a souls perspective, I think the picture is much bigger. I personally believe that as part of a soul group (or family) we work together to teach and learn from each other as well as for ourselves. I think positive lessons can be learned from the most dire situations, even when it's difficult for us to comprehend that from our 'human' perspective. I believe it is possible that you agreed (with your parents) to be born to an abusive mother and father to teach them something which is lacking in their experience - perhaps the purpose of this life was to teach them to be more compassionate in the next, in which case you will have collectively achieved your goal. I also believe that the choices we make together are made out of love, the suffering is only superficial as you can't truly appreciate the value of something until you've experienced every aspect of it, and I think that is ultimate goal, to experience everything both good and bad, in order to become a complete entity, and with maybe several thousand lifetimes to achieve that, we certainly have the time.

The two ladies that you spoke of, may be old souls who have experienced everything, and now their only purpose is to assist younger souls like yourself and others on your journey? What affect have they had on your life? Maybe they chose a life where they had to be completely dependent on others? For whatever reasons they chose for this life, there is a purpose, from which the answers may appear illogical to the human brain, but i'm sure make perfect sense in the overall scheme of things.

You might be interested in reading 'Messages from the Masters' by Dr Brian Weiss? It is based on what people have learned from the 'life between life' experience. Also, 'Only Love is Real' is very good. I think you would find any of his books very interesting, as they deal with a lot of these questions. I have read several of them and find them very insightful.

His website is here: http://www.brianweiss.com/about-the-books/

I also always recommend 'Exploring Reincarnation' by Dr Hans Tendam. It's a very good general overview about reincarnation, covering history, research, therapy, skeptic arguments, life between lives and a lot of other things. It's very easy to read and no nonsense.

You can get them on Amazon.com.

Hi Heike,

There have been many good things said here, and I can add very little from my own knowledge. However, one of the best authors I have read was Michael Newton, who focuses on the "life between lives" where a lot of possible answers can be found for the kinds of questions you ask. So, I will try to give you a bit of what I think I may have learned from him.

After I read his second book, I woke up in the middle of the night with tears in my eyes and grief in my soul because I was convinced that it was true. One of the stories involved a person involved as a care-giver to her blind and maimed brother. This was her life. She had experienced lives of his type already, and now she was learning how to be on the other side--a never failing source of encouragement, care and love to him in a life of misery.

And so it goes. I wept because I realized there was no escape. I always wanted to be happy, healthy and wealthy like everyone else--but that is not, apparently, the path to growth. One would think that leading good lives lead to even better and easier lives! However, the path of growth for souls seems to be one that leads to harder and harder tests and tasks--just like a child growing through education from basic addition to the most advanced mathematics. Only this time the tests and tasks have to do with character, temperament, goodness, patience, . . . . This doesn't mean that there are not adverse consequences of past decisions as well. But an advanced soul may be found in horrible circumstances as well as a less advanced soul--a prison inmate may be breaking stone because of crime, but an athlete may do the same thing because of some strength he/she wants to develop.

All I can say is that the whole process seems aimed at ultimately developing souls that can shine in the darkest darkness, and the process seems to require that they have the opportunity to try and shine in varying types and degrees of "darkness" in order to practice and prove their ability to do so in all and any circumstances. It is a scary and humbling concept, but also a liberating one.

God Bless,

S&S

PS--Based on what you have said, I think you may already have come a very long way (and farther than I have) to be where you are. (You sound much like the soul I mentioned above). Also, looking back on what you have said about fearfulness, you may task yourself in your next life to overcome fear in the face of evil. It may be you that has to hide the "Jew" of the age in the face of the "Nazi" of the age (perhaps some offshoot of ISIS)--with all of the fearful consequences that entails. Based on what you have already said about your current life, I definitely think you will be up to the task.

I was born deaf on my left ear.I do sometimes wonder why I chose this life. But being deaf has made me a bit more compassionate towards people with disabilities. I agree reading the above books will help. An past life regression when you're ready might also help especially if you see the lifr between live stage.

My answers as to why things happen are usually one of three things or some combination: we asked for it, it just happened and or we're being shown / guided through some karmic learning.

Irregardless of any of those, everyone has the same power within themselves to choose their path. That is what truly defines us as people and guides our future lives.

Regarding your second question though, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that souls aren't tied permanently to physically disabled body. There's also plenty of other evidence that suggests such people may be here to perhaps teach love and patience to a family member who has become a primary caregiver.

The issue is that we don't know 100% what's going on behind the scenes and it's in our best interest to try and learn what we can from each difficult scenario we face in life.

Or in other words, it's not what happened, but how you handle it.

Anyway, welcome! wine** and feel free to discuss and wonder aloud here, that's what we're here for!

Thank you all for the replies! I read and appreciate each one.

The questions I asked have truly been questions I have pondered and thought about for many years, but since my husband passed away it is also about me grieving for the the only real love I've had in my life, getting older, and hoping against hope for two things. One, that I will see him again somewhere somehow and be able to say a few things that were left unsaid, and two, that this life will not be the end of "me." I've tried hard to make amends for the mistakes I've made in this life, and I don't fear judgement or "hell," because I'm ready to stand up and say that I played the best hand I could with the cards I was dealt. What I fear, ironically since there have been times in this life I wished desperately that I could "sleep and never wake up" just to end the pain and misery, is the extinction of self. The idea of my "self" ceasing to exist fills me with unreasonable terror to the extent that I can't think of it for very long.

Since childhood I have always had trouble with the "heaven and hell" concept and have had some intuition or feeling that it's just not right. Not wrong in a moral or spiritual way, just incorrect.

After my husband passed, I had an old internet friend from my days of ghost cams and paranormal-focused websites who says she is sometimes visited by "dead people" contact me with a message from him. I would have blown it off, but she addressed a couple of things that she couldn't possibly have known about unless she had either communicated with him or gotten it from my head by some inexplicable means, so I asked her about the afterlife. She said we judge ourselves and sort of "choose" our place and that the place we go to will be largely what we expect it to be, as if we define it ourselves. That seemed fairly reasonable but left me puzzled once again as to how it could fit with reincarnation.

I also have a lot of other beliefs and odd experiences, and I am a "big picture" or synergistic thinker, so I keep trying to put the whole big puzzle together and make sense of it. I have experienced spirit activity personally, and although I wouldn't presume to definitively state that I know who or what those entities were, if they were "ghosts" in the classic sense, that rather throws a monkey wrench into reincarnation. If people reincarnate, then how could they be stuck in physical, earthly places as "ghosts?"

I'm between jobs at the moment and waiting for Rehab Services to get to my case, but I'll stop by the library and see if they might have any of those books which have been recommended.

Thanks again to all of you for putting up with me so far. I ask hard questions and think too much. :o

Your husband is still around you. He may be trying to communicate with you or even show you "signs". You need to open up.

Ghosts or spirits are "in between" physical lifetimes. They don't have to reincarnate right away. There is no such thing as "time" where they are.

Yes, as argonne says, they aren't in 'physical places' that's the thing. The 'other place(s)' where 'spirits' abide isn't the same as the place where our bodies are (Earth). It exists outside of time and space. People can even have reincarnated and still be able to communicate on a spirit level. The theory about 'ghosts' is that they have got stuck somehow because of unfinished business or some other kind of glitch.

Is there some kind of parallel universe? Higher plane? Sixth dimension? I don't really understand it myself, but somehow, if we are open to it, we are sometimes able to communicate across the divide. Many people communicate in their dreams, when the mind/spirit is more free to wander about unhindered, without having to worry about the body.

A lot of people talk about very vivid dreams when departed loved ones have visited them and communicated with them. I had such a dream about my father after he died. It was extremely clear and unlike a normal dream. As argonne says, sometimes there are signs and other kinds of inklings, that might be subtle, but if you keep your eyes open you will start to see them.

Some people, like the friend you mention, just seem to be able to tune into the wavelength better than most. This world that we live in is largely an illusion. From one level this life looks like an illusion. From our vantage point the world of spirits looks like an illusion. When are we awake and when are we dreaming? Reality is a lot stranger than most people think. :)

Just for practice, try to see if you can wish for one of these books to 'come to you'. Just visualise it in your hands, then wait a while. By all means go to the library and take out a book or two if they have them (some of them are best sellers, so they might). But, just for the exercise, see if you can 'materialise one'. Don't worry about how it might happen, just trust that it will. Someone might just give you one out of the blue, or you find one on a shelf of a junk shop or jumble sale for 10 cents, or something like that. Just see it in your hands and let the 'universe' take care of the details. It's good to realise that you can have what you want, even if you might not have a job at the moment or have lots of other obstacles. It might surprise you pleasantly.

Thanks again to all of you for putting up with me so far. I ask hard questions and think too much
None of that talk! :) We love interesting questions. It makes us happy to help, so you're doing us a favour asking 'hard' questions.

On the basis of my recent experiences with a "ghost" I think some dead people have a pretty good reason for staying on an earthbound level - at least THEY believe so.

They are like runaway children or reluctant repeaters fearing the confrontation with their parents / teachers when they return home / to school. So they avoid going home (into the light) and returning to school (reincarnation) and hope they will get away with it.

Of course this is a dead end street for them - they can't escape their responsibility forever - but they can not accept that.

I wonder how long they may remain in this situation. Maybe it's one of this "free will" things. But I hope there are some rules about it - or some teachers rapping on ghosties' knuckles if they get TOO stubborn.

Perhaps, you were choosing a time, to put you at the right age to be with your husband. Perhaps, you were choosing a place, to put you in close contact with key people in your life. Perhaps, your past life contact with your now parents was not so bad, and you were counting on their better angels to prevail . . . only they did not. Perhaps, you did not choose them at all. Perhaps, you expected to be adopted.

I am one of those who actually remembers planning parts of my life in Bardo. I did not want to come here, but people I loved were dead set on going, and I knew how tough life could be, so I came too. There was no way I was going to let them go through this life on their own. One thing I remember arguing - Yes, arguing! - is that plans are *plans*, and sometimes things go awry.

"Learning" as is so often talked about here on the board, had nothing to do with my choice. I came for love. Learning might be a by-product of what happens to me along the way, but was not at all the reason why I am here. I have no idea if this is typical or unusual.

I have some thoughts regarding the two ladies you mentioned, but these are just thoughts and may be way off the mark. I do, however, have a child with special needs at home.

Perhaps they had been off doing something else for many, many, years and they were in need of a life to simply reorient themselves to the physicality of being on Earth. Things like walking and eating seem easy, don't they? But maybe they are easy for us, because we remember going through this learning curve, with this particular gravity, multiple times before.

Perhaps one of these women will be a geneticist in their next life, making the switching off of the genes that cause their syndromes a reality. It would seem, having a sense of what it feels like to be in such a body might help the discovery process, don't you think?

Maybe intelligence and achievements are not all they are cracked up to be. Perhaps, they can do things with their thoughts and their brains, quite naturally, that we can only guess at. Perhaps intelligence gets in the way of more important things like emphathy or astral travel. Four and five are pretty good ages, if you ask me. The world is full of possibilities and you still believe in Santa Claus.

Possible PL dream...

Well, this is weird and unexpected.

I got up this morning and was putzing around as usual when a scratching noise (one of the dogs) suddenly threw me into remembering a dream that was very, very strange.

There was something like a caravan, with horses and/or cattle - oxen maybe? I didn't seem to be in this old fat body although my personality seemed to be similar. I felt young and strong. I was barefoot but I didn't notice my clothes or much about myself. I didn't really pay any attention to the other peoples' clothing either, except the girl (see next para) was wearing a brown cloth dress of some sort and was also barefoot.

We were on a trail or path headed towards a village, and the strongest part of the dream memory was that we had camped and were sleeping when someone heard a horse coming. He alerted all of us and we jumped up from our sleeping places with weapons - I think it was some sort of spear I grabbed up and was holding like I knew what to do with it - and then it turned out that the two riders and a wagon were people who were supposed to be with us and had managed to catch up by riding at night. There was a young girl - maybe 9 or 10 - with dark skin and curly hair who was either frightened or shy and ran off to hide behind a rock, but no one noticed her except me. I went over and comforted her and brought her back, and then the dream switched to another place and time where I was in a building discussing with people how to get rid of a rat infestation - that's why the scratching brought it back - and in the middle of that I woke up.

I have never, ever had dreams like this before. I'm not sure if being here and thinking/talking about the subject has really brought in PL dreams, or if my subconscious is cooking up fake ones because of my renewed interest in the subject.

Heike

I don't believe that any of us know exactly how reincarnation works. There are theories and different opinions and experiences but none of us can really tell you.

I've read about people saying that they remember choosing this life but I've also read posts in this forum by many people saying they don't. I'm in the latter category. Maybe some people end up choosing while others don't, for some reason.

If people chose their lives and their lives are miserable, who knows why? I don't believe that it's because of a lesson they have to learn or that they're being punished, but maybe there was a reason, like wanting to be near other people who reincarnated, for example.

As to people who are mentally disabled, I don't know if they are necessarily unhappy. Someone who has the intellectual abilities of a young child is probably as happy or unhappy as a young child would be. There are many disabled people who are abused and neglected, but there are many who are loved and taken good care of by their families.

That's interesting Heike. Doesn't sound 'fake' to me. Sounds like a past life dream. It's realistic, with common sort of memories.

It could be since you've been thinking and wondering about this that this dream holds some kind of clues for you to your present questions? For example, the little girl might be someone you know now, the people who were late and had to catch up might be significant and so on.

It's probably worth looking into this and seeing if you can get any more information and find a connection between these events and what might be going on in your life in the present? These things tend to come up for a reason to do with a problem you are trying to solve and often contain good clues.

Thanks again for all the replies. I haven't had any more vivid dreams, but then I've been distracted the past few days. My client that I was doing part time home health aide work for told the agency she doesn't want me back due to "cross-contamination" issues. (I used the "wrong" rag to clean the bathtub. OMG ) So now I'm completely unemployed again and VocRehab is still dragging their feet, I haven't even gotten my assessment yet. cover face

I haven't been out of the house really since Friday; gas prices have gone down but I live out in BFE so it costs money to go anywhere. I do plan on getting into town tomorrow and stopping by the library to look for some of those books.

Gosh. Oh dear. Well, you know what they say, 'One door closes and another opens'. Hopefully this will all work out OK in the long run. Sometimes it does! Try to stay positive.
